View Full Version : Pokémon Black and White
Thought I'd start a thread since the game was released in both EU and USA in the last few days and Husar told me that there's a small portion of Orgahs who enjoy these games as much as I do! My copy of White arrived today after I cancelled my DA2 Signature Edition and went for the cheaper option; penny-pinching sucks.
I've already played the game in Japanese, managed to get my seventh badge before the language barrier just got too much for me and I felt I was missing too much of the narrative to justify continuing to play; my team at the time was Samurott (http://www.serebii.net/pokedex-bw/503.shtml), Darmanitan (http://www.serebii.net/pokedex-bw/555.shtml), Galvantula (http://www.serebii.net/pokedex-bw/596.shtml), Archeops (http://www.serebii.net/pokedex-bw/567.shtml) and Reuniclus (http://www.serebii.net/pokedex-bw/579.shtml)... pretty solid unit, though I'm going to try things a little differently this time around.
Just started my English playthrough, picked Smugleaf (pffft, Snivy, whatever :P) as my starter and proceeded to head through all the early content; first gym battle was alot easier than I remembered. Currently powering through to get to the big city place to see how good this Victini is.

I got White, am currently somewhere past the first gym. My starter is an Oshawott and I think he's only a level away from evolving. No idea what my lineup is going to be yet, but Water-type is obviously spoken for, I already have a decent electric-type in that horse thing, same with fire-type, and I already have a good flyer in the Pidove but it seems to me that it might be this version of the game's Pidgey, so I'll be looking for upgrades on that one. Other two slots right now are filled with the Psychic-type from the Dreamyard (Muuni or something) and the little puppy thing.
...yeah, I'm not good at remembering species names. :laugh4: The plan is that once I get my lineup set for good, my main rotation will be named after Napoleon and his marshals.

Oshawott is great; it has this move called Shell Blade (at least, that was it's Japanese name) that it learns when it evolves at 17, basically destroys everything that doesn't outright resist it. Even after it had fully evolved and I'd picked up more moves for it, I still found myself going back to Shell Blade time and time again.
I didn't get around to using the electric zebra (I'd seen this little guy (http://serebii.net/pokedex-bw/595.shtml) in the Pokédex and immediately said "OMG WANT IT"), and I think I threw the fire monkey into the Box System after beating the first gym, since it's evolution looked a bit 'meh'. I have a knack of catching stuff and immediately checking websites to see if it's any good, really. :laugh4:

Well, I started with Tepig. It's a normal tradition for me to go with the fire type. Haven't gotten far as of yet, what with the work. But interesting little differences, such as the Team Rocket equivalent - Team Plasma, appearing very early on. And the two opening battles. Wandering around the Dreamyard, in anticipation for the first gym (did the first battle in the gym, and just scraped by, so I knew I had to heed the Leader's advice).
Enjoying it so far, tis a nice relaxing way to spend a half-hour after a long day of computer programming and writing reports, and other such yucky college work.
Also, I do very little of raising a team. I raise my starter Pokemon (or occasionally some random Pokemon I encounter and take a liking to) and they are my key element. The other Pokemon are usually just HM users and semi-strong fall guys for the Elite Four Battles.

UPDATE.
Just caught Zekrom, now I'm after Thunderun (http://www.serebii.net/pokedex-bw/642.shtml)!
I hunt you down, I will.
Also, to any one who is still near the beginning of the game: I never needed an Electric pokemon until the 6th Badge oor so, and the cave you got through to reach the 6th gym has joltiks, the spider, and the one I got, tynamo, which evoles into this guy (http://www.serebii.net/pokedex-bw/603.shtml).
You make him evolve into eelektross via a thunderstone.
Recommend you wait until after 44, so it learns thunderbolt.

Got White today.
I have a tradition of picking Fire, but I chose Oshawott. I don't like Fire/Fighting all that much, but I feel like I'm betraying Charizard. Plus I'd feel even worse if I got that Fire monkey. I'm considering restarting because I've only just gone past route 2.

UPDATE.
Caught Thunderun.
Good thing I saved that master ball.
@Double A
I too normally pick fire starters, with the exception of Tododile and Oshawatt.
The only reason I did not choose fire this time is because I believe a Fire-type pig should evlove into a nice, juicy, ham.
Or bacon.
A little update from me!
My Smugleaf evolved into Servine, who isn't as cute but still maintains the whole "haterz gonna hate" vibe that I like so much; I used the Grass Knot TM on it, seems to kill alot of the stuff I'm starting to face in one hit, which is good. I managed to add a Drilbur to my team, he seems to be an absolute beast; he's Rash-natured, which is good for the additional speed though the defense drop is a bit gah-worthy. They're both in the early 20s.
Currently working on Victini; keep catching the little furball but he doesn't have the Modest/Timid nature I want, so I've been soft-resetting alot. The hunt continues. ¬_¬

I'm going at a bit slower of a pace than the rest of you - am about to take on the fourth gym. I'm determined to plow through the game blindly, as in very little if any online referencing. As a result it's a bit more harrowing as I don't know exactly what lies ahead, but hey, I've got to kill my Spring Break somehow, right? :laugh4: Current lineup is the first evolution of Oshawott (so the equivalent of Wartortle), Victini, Pansear, Pidove's evolved form, Blitzle, and the Lipuppy or whatever's evolved form. All are in their early to mid-20s, save for my starter, which is around 26-27. The plan is to switch out Pansear since Victini can do double duty, and possibly the evolved Lipuppy, but it's serving as a good HM slave for now. Blitzle's usefulness also seems to be diminishing, although that might just be because I've run into a streak where Electric-type is completely useless.
Also, Secura: you're one of those players, eh? :laugh4: I never bothered with Pokemon's natures; catching legendaries just one time is painful enough.

Haha, yup!
I actually don't bother with EV training, since that's a bit too complex for me and detracts from the story-based play of the game, but I do try to aim for beneficial natures and movesets that can be used competitively, and I'm not above extensive Day Care abuse to get egg moves if I need 'em. :laugh4:
I'm still soft-resetting for a Modest/Timid Victini, but no joy so far. -_-
I've always had a soft spot for the pokemon games, but those Black/White starters just look silly. There's always been ridiculous looking pokemon, but the starters (with the exception of that penguin) have always looked cool, my favourites being the charmander and totodile lines. I haven't even played the game, read any reviews or even seen any gameplay footage, but I'm already disappointed that they didn't make cool looking starters.

I stuck with Oshawutt. I've only just got to the sand route place, I haven't been playing as much as you people. Like GH, I'm going to blindly jump into White. That's how I played Red, Yellow, and Gold, and I recall having the most fun with those. All I've done is looked at a list thing of all the Pokemon so I know which ones are what types. I replaced that stupid monkey with a Darumaka. He has way better moves. I also scorn Timburr. Not only is that a horrible name, he looks too ugly. I had a Blitzle, but it died any single time a special attack hit him. 11 Sp Def at level 14 is utterly horrible. My other guys are a Munna (I hope to evolve or replace, I'm not a big fan of the flowers), Sewaddle, Throh, and Patrat.
I have no idea where to get Vicinti. Fire/Psychic would come in very handy.

If I didn't lose my Platinum version (waiting confirmation by aunt - it was in her car last I saw it), maybe I could trade you something with the Pokerus.
Yes. The Pokerus. I got it from a Machop I caught before I challenged Roark. My pokemon have crazy high stats.

Gah.
Just beat the "main story line" of the game.
Unlocked the national pokedex, and can enter the eastern part of the world.
Just one problem: the pokemon levels jumped from the 50s to 65 being the minimum.
Majority of my party didn't hit 50 yet.
Grind time.
Next legendary to catch: Kyurem (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Kyurem_(Pokemon))!
Must complete the Tao Trio (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Tao_trio)!
.......too bad I can't catch Reshiram....

I have no idea where to get Vicinti. Fire/Psychic would come in very handy.
From the game's main menu, go to "Mystery Gift" and download it (you may have to configure your DS to a wireless connection first). Go to any Pokemon center and there will be a dude to give you the "Liberty Pass". Once you get that, go to the leftmost pier in Castelia City, take the boat, and go to the island. Victini is in the bottom of the lighthouse.
BTW, all of this information is included in one of the supplementary manuals that comes bundled with the actual game, so I don't consider it straying from the "go in blind" strategy.

Cool, I'll do that.
Now, for a real question. Are there any reliable electric pokemon? As it stands, I have literally no way to deal with Flying, because I don't have a Rock or Electric in my party. I wouldn't mind Rock, but half the moves have bad accuracy, and the other half have bad damage... except for Stone Edge.
Current party:
Sandile Lvl 20
Munna Lvl 22
Darumaka Lvl 25
Throh Lvl 22
Dewott Lvl 26
Swadloon Lvl 22
I'm in Nimbasa. If Razor Shell wasn't so OP I probably would have lost to N.
edit: Beat the third gym, switched Munna out for one of those Psychic/Flying birds that N had. The 'mon has huge special attack, but he can't take a hit for anything. I might get one of those flying squirrels, but they seem like they aren't as good as evolved Pokemon... like 1.5 tier, maybe.

Look no further than Galvantula (http://www.serebii.net/pokedex-bw/596.shtml) and Eelektross (http://www.serebii.net/pokedex-bw/604.shtml); I used the former when playing the Japanese game, absolutely loved it... the latter, not seen that in action, but it apparantly has no weakness due to being pure Electric-type with the Levitate ability.

Told you that move was awesome. :P
I caught a Modest Victini after several dozen attempts; proceeded to decimate anything and everything with it, even when the opponent had a level advantage. Felt really cheap to use a legendary at that stage, so now I'm looking for a Jolly Darumaka to sweep through the third gym instead. :laugh4:

If anyone's looking for another specialist to fill out their lineup, I think I just found a decent Ice-type in the Cold Storage section of Driftveil. "Vanillite" I think, got it at around 24-25 so I still have a bit of training for it to do. Hopefully it'll evolve, as it's most likely going to be my dragonslayer.

Yeah but the pure electric needs a Thunderstone, and evolves at level 39 from a guy that can't learn any new moves. So I'd have to train it for a crapton of levels before I could evolve it... but if I wanted any good moves, it would take even longer. Zap Cannon is awesome, but it's at level freaking 69. I hate it when Game Freak does that.

Zap Cannon is awful, the high damage and guaranteed paralysis doesn't make up for the low chance-to-hit; it's like a bad version of Blizzard/Fire Blast/Thunder.
I'm currently levelling up to prepare for the fourth gym; I'm currently using Servine, Drilbur, Darumaka and Solosis. My team could use some Water/Ice/Electric moves, but otherwise I'm doing well. :3

You can get a free thunderstone in the route 9(I think mega mart. Go to top floor and talk to the man in blue.

Most Psychic Pokemon can learn Ice Beam I think.
If only I had the TM...
Currently I have
Dewott (1-2 levels away from evolving)
Leavanny
Krokorok
Throh
Darmanitan
Tynamo (It's like training a Bedlum :\)
I've used Darmanitan a lot more since he evlolved. He easily became my most used Pokemon. It would be Dewott if every wild Pokemon between Clay and Skyla wasn't either Grass or Electric...

My Dewott and Tynamo have evolved. My Samurott has crappish SD (it got 2HKO'd by Cheren's Simipour using Scald), but Eelektric is a freaking beast.

Is it just me, or is it every time a Pokemon flinches from a move, that move will cause flinching 95% of the time for the rest of the battle? I just fought a battle where the opponet was using Stomp (30% chance of flinch). My guy flinched every time but twice... and he got hit at least 10 times. Another example, in either HG, I was fighting Karen in the Elite Four. I had my Umbreon use Dark Pulse to make her Gengar flinch every single time so I wouldn't lose. I had to restart a few times due to no flinching, but when her Gengar did flinch, I had pretty much won the battle.

Flinch chance is not only determined by the move itself, but also seems to be based on the speed difference between both Pokémon.
At base level, Umbreon has 65 speed, whereas Gengar has 110; even in the unlikely situation where your Umbreon had a speed-boosting nature and the Gengar had one that reduced hers (I say her, since it's Karen's we're referring to), you'd still be going second after the ghost and your flinch chance would still be pretty low.
Anyway, another update; I've just cleared the eighth gym, my five Pokés are all in the mid-forties; going through Victory Road, wanted to pick up a Deino but doesn't seem to be any point since it has to breed for Dark Pulse. >.<

I had pretty much given every single Carbos I found to my Umbreon. Not sure what the nature was.
The Carbos are bad, mmmmkay? They're kinda useless for an Umbreon, since you're still going to be slow no matter how many you feed it.

*ahem*
UPDATE.
Caught Kyurem yesterday.
Always good to have a healthy supply of Dusk Balls.
An update from me, but you'll have to check past the spoiler tags.
Claimed the eighth badge, just swept through the entire gym with Excadrill; proceeded to go through Victory Road, had a few problems due to Reunculus being so darn slow, but in all a fairly easy task. Must remember to bring someone with Strength and Surf along to properly explore next time.
Then, cleared the Elite Four with minimal fuss, found them all to be quite easy and I enjoyed the cameo from the D/P girl too.
Caught Zekrom (with a Pokéball!) and cut through N's team like a hot knife through butter; then, proceeded to fight Ghetsis, battle seemed to be going well... until his Hydreigon (that he obviously cheated to get, isn't supposed to evolve 'til Lvl69!) one-shotted my entire team; Zekrom, Reunculus and Darmanitan died to Dragon Pulse, while Excadrill, Serperior and Galvantula died to Fire Blast.
This might be the first time since Gary in RBY that I've had problems defeating the 'end-game boss' in Pokémon; I don't have a single Pokémon capable of properly denting a Dark/Dragon type without taking massive damage themselves, and there's no trainers left for me to level up against so I'm forced to rely on the Lucky Egg and reduced XP gains in Victory Road... not good. :/
thefluffyone93

Arg...I hated that guy.
However, I taught my krookodile brick break, and wrecked that 3-headed freak.
It turns out its weak to fighting.
Oh, and while your training on victoly road, try catching a Heatmor.
Or you could train by facing the 4 again.
Turns out I didn't need to do anything drastic; I sent Excadrill out against the coffin-ghost-thing, used the fact it had no effective attacks to get three Swords Dances up, KO'd it with Earthquake.
Hydreigon immediately comes out, uses Fire Blast but it misses, eats a +6 X-Scissor in return; the rest of the team falls soon afterwards, I sit back and enjoy the ending... only to realise that everyone post-game has Pokémon at a minimum of 63 while my own were early-50s. Not so much a difficulty curve as an annoyance, really. >.<
Currently in the process of training an Adamant Magikarp to fill the last spot on my team, though I'm considering ditching Darmanitan and Reunculus if I can find better pre-Gen V Pokémon to fill the gaps. I want this Dream World feature to be launched now, rather than in two weeks. xD

Dark/Dragon, huh? That sucks. I guess I'm going to teach my Crookodile Brick Break. I do have a fighting Pokemon with Storm Throw. It only has 40 power, but it always criticals and gets STAB because it's a fighting move. I believe that's 120 power, plus high attack. That's like Revenge, but without reduced priority and having to get hit to make it work.

It's a pretty potent STAB combination, but the main problem is that it's best moves require Day Care breeding since they're no longer TMs. >.<

Okay, quick plea for assistance. I accidentally killed one of the roaming legendaries (beat the 8th gym, heading to Victory Road). Anyone know if beating the Elite 4 will reset him or do I have to reset the game to get him back?

Hmmm....Bulbapedia and Serebii don't mention anything about them returning after the Elite 4 is beaten.
And, as far as I know, Nintendo never did something like that in previous games.
I guess the only sure-fire way to find out is to beat the 4, then go back to route 7 and talk to the granny.
When I caught Thundurus, she said that someone had finally caught the pokemon.
She may also have a unique dialogue if it was beaten as well.
If that is true, check what she says before you face the 4, then see after you beat them.
If she is still talking like Thundurus/Tornadus is still roaming and not gone, chances are you can still catch him.
This is all speculation, mind you.
Also, If you do heed my advice and beat the four, you technically beat the main storyline, so there is no reason why you shouldn't restart if you wanted too.

I'll be going to bed now; chances are I'll check this in the morning during school.

Hahahaha, I won't be able to let you know for a few days at least. RL is destroying me, Shogun 2 just came out, and I'm a grinder anyway. :laugh4:

Ok, I tried training that snowflake so I'd have a dragon killer. It dies faster than Jinx, despite me having taut it Blizzard and Frozen Breath. It gets other Pokemon down to red health before they 1HKO it. Turns out a lot of wild pokemon know fighting moves... I'm going to try that bear now. EXP share is so helpful.
Did anyone replace Razor Shell with Aqua Tail on Samurott? I haven't really used Razor Shell much at all since I got Surf.

That thing is bad (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Cryogonal#Base_stats); it's Sp.Def is great, Sp.Atk/Speed are decent... but the base 70 HP and 30 Def mean that any physical move, or indeed anything super-effective, will one-shot you. Congrats on catching one, but I wouldn't bother with using it to battle. :3

Samurott's base Sp.Atk is slightly higher than it's Atk, but it has the benefit of learning powerful physical moves (X-Scissor/Megahorn, Night Slash via breeding) and Swords Dance... it's really dependent on nature, if you've got one that reduces Atk. then you're probably better off leaning towards Surf/Ice Beam/Grass Knot etc for your coverage.
As for the physical move choice, Aqua Tail is better than Razor Shell; use that until you pick up the HM for Waterfall, which is slightly less damage than Aqua Tail but superior in terms of accuracy... the damage difference won't matter too much after a Swords Dance anyway.

That's why I stopped using Cryogannal. I only started because it took me 2 Pokéballs, 5 Great Balls, and 4 Ultra Balls to catch it.
When it was at 1HP. And Paralyzed.
For most of the year, there's only a 1% chance to encounter Cryogonal in the wild, though that chance does increase during Winter months (April, August, December)...
...to a whopping 5% encounter rate. :laugh4:

Yeah, it's fall right now, obviously.
A little update from me before I crack on with the VotA writeup.
I caught all three of the Musketeer Trio, including an Adamant Virizion that I felt would be a fitting replacement for Serperior; I might use the ol' Grass Snake again someday, mebbe when the Dream World version is released and I can abuse it's ability with Leaf Storm. Until then, Virizion is destroying everything with Sacred Sword and Leaf Blade, so... tough luck, Smugleaf.
I also caught Volcarona within the Relic Castle, which I felt was pretty good going considering that my highest level at the time was Galvantula, at Lvl.55 (Volcarona is Lvl.70); tough fight, the thing likes to use Quiver Dance to boost it's stats and then destroy you with Bug Buzz/Heat Wave, but eventually overcame the moth... I've currently shoved it into the Day Care, along with it's pre-evolution that I received as an Egg on Route 18, so that I can start breeding for a Timid Larvesta.
My piecemeal team is currently Gyarados, Virizion, Galvantula and Reunculus; I'm considering adding Gliscor to the mix, not sure yet... maybe Chansey too, who is actually better than Blissey in terms of complete survivability if you give her that special stone that grants +50% Def/Sp.Def to Pokémon that can still evolve. Undecided, really.
Forgot to mention a little suggestion; catch a Tropius, it's far and away one of the best HM Slaves in the game. Mine is packing Strength, Cut, Fly and Flash... it's like a giant, leaf-winged Swiss Army Knife. <3

That pure dragon pokemon in the tower can learn Strength, Cut, and Fly (and maybe others). Flash isn't an HM any more, so you can just delete a TM move when you find a place that needs it, and then reteach the TM when you get out.
Still can't find Platinum or HG

Oh, so belated, but I can confirm that the storm (signaling Thunderus) has respawned after the Elite 4. I haven't encountered Thunderus himself yet, but if the storm's there that's a good sign.
Update on the Global Link function that was intended to be launched worldwide on the 30th; due to recent events in Japan, Gamefreak/Nintendo have delayed the launch so that the power required for the servers and so on can be put to better use with the rescue effort. Completely understandable and highly commendable.
I'm still training my Pokémon up, having to shuffle things around since I can't get Poison Heal Gligar via Global Link, considering alternatives for a battling team; currently I have Gyarados, Virizion and Volcarona pretty much nailed down, just need to fill in the gaps with suitable 'mons.

Many of my friends frown upon using legendaries in battles.
But I think they're just jealous I have them.
Also, might I suggest an eelektross for electric?
Mine also knows crunch and dragon claw, but it can even learn flamethrower, I believe.
I always call that grass legendary "Verizon".....I wonder if he gets a good signal?
Edit: Thats great news, Hankerchief, good luck catching him.

I think that some legendaries are okay to use, because their power is relative to other non-legendary 'mons; good examples are Zapdos, Suicune, and Jirachi, who are all comparative to pseudo-legendaries such as Tyranitar or Dragonite.
As a rule, I completely avoid using Arceus, Darkrai, Deoxys, Dialga, Giratina/Giratina-O, Groudon, Ho-Oh, Kyogre, Lugia, Manaphy, Mew, Mewtwo, Palkia, Rayquaza and Shaymin-S; I suppose you could add Reshiram and Zekrom to this list also.
Anyways, I got bored and restarted White, been playing it on-off alongside a restarted Soul Silver; I got a little bored, the game didn't really seem to be going anywhere for me and my 'mons were only early 70s, probably because I found myself impatiently waiting for the Global Link launch so I could get the Dream World versions of some of my favourites... so yeah, started again. xD

Finally beat the Elite Four and the rest. The funny thing was that Scrafty (Dark/Fighting) was able to handle three of them by himself, whilst my Haxorus took out the Fighting group. It also kind of ruined the illusion when Haxorus ended up fainting Reshiram with one Dragon Claw and then proceeded to tear through the rest of N's group. It just has such an insane attack, whilst also being faster than Zekrom or Reshiram, even at level 50. That said Hydreigon was almost impossibly hard as it was faster than my Haxorus and was able to faint it with one Dragon Pulse. In the end I just kept my team going with hyper potions and revives and took it out. Overall pretty pleased with the game, although I do feel that the plot could had been continued for a bit longer than the Elite Four as it had the potential for a lot more. Still probably the best Pokemon game I've played so far.

Well, there's some continuity with rounding up the Sages, but overall I felt that they were holding back certain storylines for Pokémon Grey or whatever they intend to call the inevitable third game.
They still make Pokémon games!?! The mind boggles!
