So out of lazyness I went longer than usual without shaving. But now I've shaved it off, I feel naked and incomplete. :embarassed:

Anyone else ever feel like this?

Yea just removed 5/6 weeks worth recently for a wedding over in the UK and for a couple of days after I felt a bit funny, so I let it grow again and then I stupidly shaved it off this morning to go the the u21 match in Castlebar this evening.

Nah, seriously, some men look better without them, but most men I think would look better with a beard. It definitely is a great feeling to wear one. It is just a part of you, like your teeth, or head hair.

Well I've had a full beard since I was 15...so allowing it to grow out as long as possible is the dream, but uni placement kills that dream as I need to shave every second day! At the time having a full beard in high school was awesome...but now it is such a chore.

If I shave every day I get a mighty neck rash, anyone else have this problem? The stuble hasn't grown enough to get a good slice on day 2 so I leave it for day 3 to shave.

I have a small goatee, I look like either Jafar from Aladdin or Ali Baba at times. It's not nearly as curly though. My mother and sister hate it, but most of the girls with whom I've had a relationship either loved it or were indifferent.

A beard's increase to a male's sex appeal is directly proportional to the amount of effort gone into maintaining it. You're not going to impress anyone with an uneven, unkempt furry creature on your chin.

I guess it depends on the length of the beard and what the guy actually looks like, really.

Some guys really suit the bearded look, whereas others just come across as a hobo... then again, you also have the clean-shaven baby-faced guys who look like a fifteen year old, which is a complete no-no for me as well; a man's gotta look rugged if he's going to go down that route, the teenage look doesn't appeal to an adult woman, ta very much. :laugh4:

Let's see what science has to say on the matter. Or, more correctly, science according to this Telegraph article; as I am too lazy to do more background research:

Women prefer men with stubble for love, sex and marriage (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/earthnews/3345796/Women-prefer-men-with-stubble-for-love-sex-and-marriage.html)

Stubble is the way to win a woman’s heart, a study has shown. Researchers found that women are more attracted to men with stubbly chins than those with clean-shaven faces or full beards.

Women participating in the research rated men with stubble as tough, mature, aggressive, dominant and masculine - and as the best romantic partners, either for a fling or a long-term relationships.

...

Writing in the journal Personality and Individual Differences, the researchers conclude: “Facial hair, or beardedness, is a powerful sociosexual signal, and an obvious biological marker of sexual maturity.

"Facial hair may have been sexually selected by females on the basis of associated male success, despite its threatening appearance. Clean-shaven faces therefore may suggest appeasement, as well as being an obvious sign of sexual immaturity.

Anyway. Anyway, ideas like this is not the reason why I keep a stubble/short beard. T'is simply convenient; and as the article says: it carries the bonus of giving a more masculine appearance - or a grimmer one, if I may use that word.

Well, I'd be quite surprised if you found Gerard Butler to be attractive! :P

lol, a guy can appreciate male attractiveness. After all, if men had no sense of male attractiveness, how would they model themselves to look attractive? Just as a woman can find another woman pretty, a guy can recognize another man as attractive. In my humble opinion Gerard Butler looks better with his phantom mask on than with it off. :P
I generally notice that women have different ideas of feminine beauty than men do (women for instance have the insane idea that wearing sunglasses large enough to shade a house is attractive, and that guys really care if their toenails are painted or not :P), and likewise, I think that men have different ideas of what makes a man attractive than what women do. (and of course we are right! ~;))
For instance, IMHO Russel Crowe and Gerard Butler are two of the ugliest guys ever. Jim Caviezel, Christian Bale, Sam Worthington, Errol Flynn, etc. are good looking guys. I bet that most men out there wouldn't mind looking like any one of them.

Exactly. Who care if others think a beard is not professional? Who cares if someone thinks it is not attractive? In my experience, if you think yourself professional and act like it, and if you think yourself attractive, and act like it, other will believe it.
And actually, a beard can have the opposite effect of what you described Strike. I am considered an evil genius of sorts (in fact, have been described in those words) amongst a lot of my fellow history students at my Uni (made evident by the constant requests I get to help people with their papers and explain things to them :P). I have had several people tell me that my beard makes me look like some sort of intense genius. :P
The truth is BTW that I am of barely average intelligence, but I know that getting good grades is not the same thing as being smart or knowing what you are talking about. Consequently I have the respect of my professors and my fellow students some how ended thinking me really smart. The beard somehow fits a stereotype in their head of some sort of brilliant mind disconnected from the world.
Sure, it may not be what you want in some professions, but it could work to your advantage in others.

Meh, for me it doesn't take longer than 10 days or so to go from clean shaved to a fully grown beard.

I like to play with it. Most of the time, I leave a modest bit of hair below on the chin. Since last week, it's the intellectual goatie again. I'll keep it until carnaval Halle, then I'll probably have to clean-shave, because I'll dress like a woman the first day of Carnaval (depending on the weather though, no short skirt when it snows).

Once tried a moustache, but didn't like it very much.

When on holiday, I only shave when I want to. Usually, this means I have to shave off the full beard on the evening before going back to work. Cavemen aren't allowed in the office :laugh4:

On the other hand, I might show up unshaven 90% of the time, usually wearing a shirt covered in sap stains, but my shirt is tucked in, I wear a belt, my boots are laced, and I look like I'm ready to work.

I think a beard can look professional and attractive. As Monk said, it's all in the grooming, as with normal hair. Guys who simply stop shaving and let scraggly, seemingly random, tufts of hair on their chins grow do a disservice to all beards.

I'm currently rocking a half cm long full beard. I generally grow the beard during the ski season and shave during the summer. I'm lucky in that my beard grows in evenly and fully.

the former is stubble, not beard.

If I were to shave I would spend far less time and it would much more simple. a good looking, well trimmed beard means a hell of a lot more commitment and skill than just shaving.

Like clothing, facial hair popularity comes and goes. Beards seem to be on the rebound. I find civil war pics very amusing for the fact that everyone has wily facial hair as opposed to current military trends.

I can do that in a day.

Not shaving for at least a week or two is for a beard merely, as Churchill would say, "the end of the beginning".

About twenty-five years ago when I was in a cabin in the woods with Beirut, I went about a year or two without shaving. I had a beard you could hide chickens in. It was glorious. :disguise:

I only wear a full beard when I've been too lazy to shave for a while, usually in the winter when it's (arguably) fashionable.

Currently I have a moustache with the triangle under my lower lip, pirate style. I think it suits me, and so do those whose opinions of my appearance I consider to have value.

I used to add the chin hair with the above (without the sides under the mouth, which would make it a full goatee), but that has turned 50% gray, so I don't usually wear it that way anymore.

I used to wear a full goatee often when I was younger. It looked ok but got to be quite a cliche, so I started doing the pirate thing. This pic, which is buried in the Family Photos ... thread, is of me about a decade ago, with a full goat, and my bro, with his baby face:

Oh, and Vuk - I'm not sure people thinking a person look intelligent is the same thing as looking attractive.

I once had a salesman tell me I looked like an engineer. It was correct, but not exactly encouraging - the stereotype of engineers is not of attractive, well groomed people.

It does seem like goatees are very popular nowadays. Seems like I'll stick with my beard (or, really stubble - I likely won't grow it out again until the winter).
