As i commented in another thread people try to start fights with me when i wear my glasses. They are normal glasses not of the birth control variety or overly thick yet nonetheless people try to start fights with me.

Now im a relatively cut down boy since my playing days in high school at 6'1 and as of last weigh in a week ago supposedly 177 pounds. I can bench like 215 pounds and have very little fat on my body. So in all i would say im not a good target to pick a fight with.

Noting that people still try to fight me when i wear glasses. I take the glasses off and i get apologies at parties if im bumped into. glasses on people expect me to apologize. Obviously i do not wear glasses out anymore on the weekend for the pure annoyance they cause.

My friends have commented on it. they say they rather have me out when im not wearing glasses because being the antagonistic group of gentlemen we are it brings more points to our side when stand downs happen. i am not really a smiler as awful as that sounds and according to my friends i present a much more fearsome face when not wearing my glasses.

anyone else ever see this sort of thing happen before.

lol, I wear wire-frames, and I usually have no trouble. Most people always apologize if they bump into me.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and I am 6' 2"/3" (somewhere in between), 275 lbs, and last I tried, could bench 260 lbs. (I am not built for benching :P)

Yeah, there is something about glasses that make you look nerdy/weak. I guess you lose manliness points for them since they are associated with pursuits like reading and other un-manly activities.

As for me, I'm 6'15", 350 lbs and can bench 800 lbs. I tried to wear glasses but I'm so manly my incredibly muscular and well defined face just snapped them in half.

OK, tbh, I've never tried a pair of glasses on. Apart from sunglasses, and I was told they made me look like a evil villain out of James Bond or something like that...

The effect has been noted, but I dont really have a choice. Astigmatism+hatred of contacts+ imminent blindness = I dotn care how dorky I look, I am going to enjoy my sight before I lose it.

*120 pounds, 5'6", and never benched anything in my life.

im not saying i'm god and built like one but im not someone people should want to hit if they are looking for someone weak. im a normal guy. but im figuring most of the people who try to start things are have some sort of issue and are looking for weakness to take it out on (why else walk around fighting strangers) so it is just sort of interesting to choose someone with glasses. for what appears to be because of the glasses

Reading an unmanly pursuit? I am really tempted to say something to you that would probably get me banned. For how long was education restricted mostly to men in most parts of the world? Traditionally I would say that it is considered a manly thing, considered most women were not allowed. Maybe it is considered unmanly amongst gangster trash, but I don't exactly consider those types men, so I don't give a taff.
Forgetting the traditional view and looking at it logically, I would say that reading is neither manly or unmanly; it is simply smart. Smart women and men will do it and stupid women and men will not. Speak for yourself my friend.

Yeah... I think the last time I had anything close to be in a "fight" was in the Fifth Grade. I say close because I'm sure it was all just wild swinging, and lasted all of about twenty seconds...

'cause I'm lover, baby.

Maybe it's because I'm not a guy, but I've never experienced this phenomenon. The whole bumping into people in bars/fights = fight thing doesn't make sense in my brain. Maybe it's because some people are just d-bags and would have tried to fight with you regardless?

The only thing I can think of is that your glasses make you look smarter, which might make some neanderthals think they can win in a fight vs you regardless of your size, because to them, smart = nerdy = physically weak?

The only attention my glasses ever received was when I was in elementary/middle school. It was a combination of being one of the few kids who got glasses and the fact that they were extremely ugly. Contacts FTW.

Nobody in my high school every bothered anyone for wearing glasses. I think I got lucky and in some ways the kids at my school were a little more mature, there never was ever any bullying, at least that I knew of.

I wear glasses; nobody ever bothered me because of it. I wonder what kind of parties you guys go to ~

I've never ever been in a fight at a party. In my career of going out, it happened two times to me that someone wanted to pick a fight with me. Maybe it's because I'm a bit of a smooth talker, but both occasions ended with the "aggressor" buying me several drinks.

Maybe the problem is not the glasses, but your social skills

it's college bars and house parties...... my social skills are fine. some people literally do go out looking to fights. there are usually several reasons for this.

1. anger
2. parental issues
3. and the most common...... trying to impress girls.

im not saying fights are very common im not living in an american pie movie but it does happen. And yes andres that often how most of these build ups end up with everyone being "best friends". I have found this reaction pretty common when combined with alcohol

Yeah, there is something about glasses that make you look nerdy/weak.

It's all about attitude. A strong person is not going to look weaker only because he puts a pair of glasses on.

As for the topic in general; the world described in the OP is not one that I recognise.

lol, a lot of it has to do with who you choose to associate with, and where you choose to frequent.

03-19-2011, 01:31
i'm not saying this happens often just that it has happened before. its more humorous than anything else. like noe of my friends and i got into an argument with another guy (large, fat, stereotypical douche) and he saw fit to start cursing and carrying on etc. our friend walks over big strong guy and by the end hes trying to appease my larger friend while still giving us crap. people prey on who they perceive as weak. they associate glasses with weakness just as shortness equates weakness (even though my friend is on the school football team as a running back....)

so you see what i mean.

and viking in the fog of confusion alcohol creates people aren't always able to show themselves as large and powerful to intoxicated asses even if they are.

alot of college FRESHMEN bars are like this, at least i thought so.

Viking
03-19-2011, 11:58
I must admit that I do not really know what a freshman is, not to mention what freshman bar is. I was just musing at the topic from a wider perspective, thinking that such an attitude would we visible elsewhere as well - and not just in whatever-it-is bars and parties. ~;)

I used to wear this style of headware (http://www.strictlyfitteds.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/new-era-safari-59fifty-fitted-baseball-cap_hat_1.jpg) a couple years back. Scared the living hell out of people, lol. When I wear glasses and a tuque, people are generally more receptive towards me and less terrified, but they still don't mess with me. But still, people in general are ignorant and I tend to walk tall, proud and unflinching, so everything adds up.

EDIT: I was also told that, when I'm deep in thought, I look angry and intimidating. This is because I unknowingly frown and furrow my eyebrows. As I am a straight hardcore scholar (lol), I find myself deep in thought quite often.

I am permanently dressed like a bum. I have one pair of shoes that are kind of like a cross between trainers and boots and I haven't cleaned them since I got them years ago. The only trousers (or pants for Americans) I have are of the tracksuit variety. For t-shirts all I have are some plain ASDA ones but I do have football tops I can wear if I want to look like less of a tramp. Plus in the winter I wear a jacket that looks like it belongs to an old man.

So I guess I look more like a cross between a chav and a bum.

In North America, cufflinks are pretty rare unless you are attending something extemely formal, or if you are involved in the cultural elite (personally I don't hang with the Rothschilds, Gettys, Irvings or the Aspers). I think I wore them to high school prom and to my wedding...maybe as part of a dress uniform, but I don't even remember...

I've worn glasses and contacts at various points in my life but have never been accosted because of them. Ok ... maybe in grade school, I was teased sometimes ("Four-eyes!" etc.), but it never got to me. Just kids being kids.

When in my prime and into such things, I enjoyed a few accessories. They included:

A variety of Revo and Oakley sunglasses (still have my Oakleys that are exactly like Hoot's in Black Hawk Down)
An Omega Seamaster watch, 18K, stainless, and crystal (still have it but it needs some work)
A gunmetal gray Zero-Halliburton aluminum briefcase with the advanced locking mechanism (still have it; holds my pistolas)
A subtle and understated Hawaiian engagement ring (no strings, just a cool understated style; long lost)
Black, short, skin-tight deerskin cop gloves (need to replace my current ones which are worn out)
Black, rather plain but elegantly understated, hand-made, leather-soled Lucchese "cowboy" boots
My trusty and warm Nino Cerruti double-breasted top coat for more formal affairs in cold weather
My trusty black leather jackets, varying in styles over the years, but usually understated and on the "traditional" side of style

Nowadays I just prefer a t-shirt, jeans, black boots, black belt and either a sport jacket or leather bomber, depending on the scenario. Done with the bling thing.
