Next time wear glasses. I recommend "Harry Potter Style"...if that doesn't work, try "Dame Edna Horn-rimmed"

Why would you want to get into a fight?

Cause he is a - oh, sorry. :beam: ~;) Nah, I don't think he is serious. I think that he is rather insensitively making fun of other orgahs who posted in the bully thread about people attacking them.

You need to not shave for three days, wear Old Spice aftershave (the one with that coloured guy on a horse commercial), and project manliness upon entering the bar. This is done by kicking in the door upon entry, looking around with a mean look on your face for a second or two, and then and striding to the bar in the most direct line, destroying any tables, furniture and weak men that may be in the way. The lesser men will now flee the bar. Those of roughly equal size will want to measure their manliness against yours. These you will fight. You will emerge victorious. The women now consider you the alpha male. They will tend to your wounds and offer their bodies to you for impregnation with your superior seed. You get to pick one or two of your choice to take home.

Did you really just say "coloured guy"?

Just say that a little too loud in the wrong neighborhood and you'll have all the action you need. ;)

In myu defense, it was the common word for your people back when I grew up in southwest Texas in the forties.

My people? Keep digging!

(In reality I take no offence. But I am not an African American, nor would someone descibe my skin color as being Black.)

It is interesting to see how words change, and how something that was acceptable one day is not only a few years later. It is even more amusing to see people who insist on judging works of the past by today's standards. As you point out, in times not so far distant, this was a common word to describe people of that heritage/skin pigmentation. While some would say it had negative undertones, and while some would use it in a condescending or negative way, others might use it completely innocently. So Tom Sawyer and To Kill a Mockingbird become racist in the eyes of some because they use language of the time, when in reality they are anything but racist in theme.

Now I am uncertain even myself...is it even still acceptable to say "Black"? It is common here in Canada, but I never know what to say to Americans...

I don't drink, so at bars with my food I get unsweetened iced tea. Often in times, someone sitting near me will get a caffeine buzz and we will start to argue irratically about things, but we usually calm down when one of us squeezes the lemon wedge in the other persons direction and get juice in their eye and then they or I conceed defeat. That is usually my case anyway. I don't want to get pulled over on the way home though...

Yes.

The other day at work another one of the staff wanted to point a customer out to me, and he hesistated a bit, before opting to call the black guy "African American". Of course, we live in the UK and he had a local accent, I blame US TV shows.

All the black guys I know, if you called them "African-American" or anything like that, would look at you like you just landed from another planet.

Black does appear to be the most acceptable word of use to the average black person.

This thread got quite amusingly off topic.

I'll just leave this here to sum things up.
