View Full Version : Tech help in windows 7?
I've searched your forum but couldn't find help for this specific problem. I have a similar problem to the "Loads to campaign then CTD" thing but not exactly. It will load up the game fine, and I start loading my campaign up, but when it's finished it immediately backs me out to the menu as if I had actually gotten into the campaign but then chose to exit. It is notable, that the lower maybe fifth of the screen is doing that graphical smear glitch at this time, though the rest of it is fine. Upon clicking things like "Resume game" it does exactly the same thing, loads then immediately backs me out to the menu ago. If I attempt to continue a previously saved game then it crashes.
I've tried the so-called "Button fix" and Microsoft's Compatibility Kit for running it in 32-bit XP SP 2, but they're not helping.
I'm running Windows 7, 64-bit. Have you guys heard of this before? Any advice?

Welcome to our Hall djaked!
I am sorry, I have not heard of this problem before. When I first had MTW, I experienced a problem in which the campaign loading bar would fill and then a CTD would occur, which problem was cured by reloading outdated drivers for that particular on-board graphics chip (I use an old computer).
Perhaps you may have a similar problem, and I am sure you will find all the assistance necessary here, only wait perhaps 12 hours for the more knowledgable brothers to be active.
I suggest however that you meanwhile provide us with what graphics card you are using, RAM and processor details, and also what version of the game you are using (MTW, MTW with VI, MTW Gold Edition, and what patch).
I hope someone comes along soon!
Running Intel Core i3 4 Ghz, 4 gb RAM, and MTW version 1.1
Much to my embarrassment, I still don't know how to find my graphics card.

Good djaked, that may help considerably in the diagnosis.
For your graphics: Richt click My Computer> Properties> Hardware tab> Device Manager.
This is of course on a Windows XP, so hopefully 7 is similar in this regard. Your card should be listed under the relevant category in the Device Manager.
It may also assist, if you have time, to make some experiments in-game for yourself, can you tell us for example, if you can play custom battles? Have you tried starting the campaign with different factions, or reinstalled the game?
You can also open up a command prompt window (Accessories-> Command Prompt), and type "dxdiag". This will give you a pretty decent summary of what your system looks like.
Another thing you can try is running in Win 2000 compatibility mode. What resolution are you running the game with?
Welcome to the Org, djaked! ~
My card is apparently called Intel HD Graphics, and battles actually work perfectly fine, but anything to do with the campaign map kicks me back to the menu. I have tried running in 2000 already to no avail, thank you though for that shortcut, drone.
I've tried starting a campaign in different periods and with different factions, no go as well. I did reinstall the game once when I noticed this problem, but it didn't work. That was quite a while ago, I would do it now just to be safe, but I'm in college now and the installation disk is waaaay over back at home.
The resolution for both battle map and campaign map are set to 800x600.
Ah, Intel graphics. Trying to hunt down some posts, I know I've seen discussion on this before.
In the meanwhile, try to put an empty file named "skipcredits.txt" in the top level of your MTW install directory. This will prevent the intro movies from playing and might help. Have you tried running the campaign map at a different resolution? And it sounds like you have had the game running on your PC before, is this correct?

Try running the campaign map at a higher resolution, djaked, MTW campaigns can be extremely touchy (I have intel graphics too) if the map is not set to 1024x768.
There is a thread around here somewhere, which was pertinent to my problem, which gave specifications for a particular Intel graphics chip (Which just happened to be my one), and which older driver to download for it and where.
If you also need to reload an older driver (Newer driver perhaps?) in which case we should start researching just what sort of Intel graphics you have.
Yeah, I think that's the thread I remember, but the board's search function isn't giving me any joy at the moment. Do you remember if this was in the Main Hall, or the Apothecary?

Conduct a search for "82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV" and "82915G/GV/910GL".
These searches will show the most relevant problems.
My problem was a CTD occurring, not a return to the Menu, but the catalyst may be the same.
This is the thread which solved my problem: https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?49235-MTW-keeps-shutting-down&highlight=82845G%2FGL%2FGE%2FPE%2FGV
Specifically, the information contained in post #9
This solved the crash to desktop CTD when loading a single player campaing on my laptop, a Dell Inspiron 1100 with an intel 82845G graphics controller and lots of other stuff I messed around with.
The latest version of the graphics driver, v. 6.14.10.4XXX or something, didn't work. I went to the
intel site/download area/
/graphics/82830M graphics
and got version 6.14.10.3889.
This is a link that may or may not get you there
http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scri...ition&lang=eng
Solved the problem.
Thanks to everone who has put up posts for the other things I tried, and Erado for his reccomendation to go to the site to get the driver.(erado.totalwar.org)
Hopefully your problem is fixed by the same driver, djaked.
The older driver solution is only relevant to the XP user, Vista/7 users don't have the option of reverting to that version as it wasn't built for Vista/7.
Beyond that I can't help much, I don't use windows and have never had a PC with intel graphics apart from an old laptop that doesn't have windows installed either.
Still no good. Thanks for the help though guys.
The only other Win7 "fix" I know of is the resolution fix, which is not specifically for this problem. If you want to give it a try, here it is:
https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?127906-Resalution-issues
post #4. You can try it, but I doubt it will do anything.
Disable compositing (turn off the "aero" effects) and try again. Also try the XP compatibility mode by right clicking the executable and changing the settings there, if you haven't already.
