hey guys
Zim and I have begun a multiplayer campaign against one another for which we'll be posting an AAR here (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?134456-Mod-vs.-Mod-A-TWS2-Deathmatch).
Please follow the game if you can stand to watch a pair of n00bs mudwrestle...:laugh4:
Be great to see some cheering / jeering fans...

Sure, take the safe bet. :clown:

I think this should be a common occurance. You could call it Mod Deathmatch, every couple months different moderators square off. :grin2:

You should see me play. That's even funnier.
Is this like highlander and that the winner takes the power of the defeated moderator and in the end there can be only one? Because that would be awesome.

Things are getting interesting and I think we are almost at a good point for the first updates.
In the meantime here's an example of what happens when two of the weakest ships in the game, commanded by two players who never played a naval battle in TWS2 or even the demo, go at eachother. I was playing the Myoshi ship.
https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/local_links.php?action=jump&catid=276&id=8927
I highly recommend this as a sound track for the battle.

I should have just run away - it would have been less embarassing
The naval battle? I honestly don't think that was a high point for either of us. I just got slightly luckier.

Ok I'm going to post the first update - this is from our first session of play a couple of days ago.
First I must gather my chi:
https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-07_00010.jpg
Upgrade my farms:
https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-07_00012.jpg
Build a harbour:
https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-07_00013.jpg
Recruit some men for the Daimyo's army. You'll notice I'll be bow-heavy throughout...
https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-07_00015.jpg
And now it's off to bother the Kono.
https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-07_00016.jpg
Aha, my chi is now in place
https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-07_00021.jpg
A turn or two later, suitably bolstered by new recruits, the Daimyo lays siege to Iyo. No assault for now - let them sally if they dare.
https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-07_00026.jpg
I'm a bit worried about this large Sogo army which tracked me here - it might turn back and march on Tosa while I'm otherwise engaged.
https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-07_00030.jpg
So I'll try to make nice with them.
https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-07_00027.jpg
Success! This means that when I take Iyo that Sogo force will be bounced back to their border.
https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-07_00028.jpg
Mmm friendship peace and love with the Sogo.
https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-07_00029.jpg
Out come the Kono, all according to plan.
https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-07_00031.jpg
I got a bit too distracted to take screenshots here so there's just a couple.
https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-07_00032.jpg
https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-07_00033.jpg
https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-07_00034.jpg
And that's where the session ended for that day. Zim will no doubt post and maybe he can add some screenshots to that battle - he was spectating and might have taken a few.
Also from session #1.
1545:
The Daimyo and family.
https://img42.imageshack.us/img42/1748/shogun22011040622484187.jpg (https://img42.imageshack.us/i/shogun22011040622484187.jpg/)
The territory of the mighty and feared Shimazu.
https://img163.imageshack.us/img163/310/shogun22011040622433288.jpg (https://img163.imageshack.us/i/shogun22011040622433288.jpg/)
The Shimazu are an ancient and revered clan. However, it dawns on Daimyo Takahisa that perhaps they might receive some more reverence if they increased their territory, not to mention a better inheritance for his three sons. With that in mind he brings together all the forces of the clan and moves against Ito, first signing an alliance with neighboring Sagara to keep his capital safe.
Takahisa is slightly surprised to find Osumi defended by only a small group of local Samurai and archers.
https://img694.imageshack.us/img694/4453/shogun22011040622450810.jpg (https://img694.imageshack.us/i/shogun22011040622450810.jpg/)
His retainers tell him that he won a heroic victory that day, although he does not remember much of it, almost as if the battle were resolved automatically with no combat taking place...
https://img849.imageshack.us/img849/3210/shogun22011040622460114.jpg (https://img849.imageshack.us/i/shogun22011040622460114.jpg/)
Setting aside his foggy memories of the battle, he marches on towards the Ito capital only to be met by one of their armies. Perhaps these were meant reinforce Osumi?
https://img843.imageshack.us/img843/7947/shogun22011040623013217.jpg (https://img843.imageshack.us/i/shogun22011040623013217.jpg/)
The Shimazu army marches towards its enemy.
https://img824.imageshack.us/img824/3991/shogun22011040623063085.jpg (https://img824.imageshack.us/i/shogun22011040623063085.jpg/)
Perhaps fearing being whittled away by the superior Shimazu bowmen (which was exactly the Daimyo's plan) the Ito move forward to engage, and lacking other cavalry their own general charges the Shimazu bowmen. The archers back away behind a line of spears, only for the Ito general to change directions and mvoe on another group of bowmen.
https://img823.imageshack.us/img823/8048/shogun22011040623080291.jpg (https://img823.imageshack.us/i/shogun22011040623080291.jpg/)
At this point Takahisa's horse tripped and threw him off. He would be unconscious the rest of the battle, but his co-general tells him that his spearmen bravely charged the Ito commander, and the rest of the army also advanced. Before long the Ito dogs routed and were cut down.
https://img851.imageshack.us/img851/6338/shogun22011040623094434.jpg (https://img851.imageshack.us/i/shogun22011040623094434.jpg/)

Session 1, continued.
Encouraged by his victories thus far, Takahisa continues onwards towards the Ito capital. While in his encampment outside their last city, he is pleased to hear that research is going well back home. This is taken as an omen that it is time to assault the city.
https://img534.imageshack.us/img534/9021/shogun22011040623125445.jpg (https://img534.imageshack.us/i/shogun22011040623125445.jpg/)
https://img696.imageshack.us/img696/4214/shogun22011040623185007.jpg (https://img696.imageshack.us/i/shogun22011040623185007.jpg/)
Ashigaru archers are sent ahead to rain arrows from the defenders.
https://img856.imageshack.us/img856/7878/shogun22011040623222249.jpg (https://img856.imageshack.us/i/shogun22011040623222249.jpg/)
However, the Ito, cowardly as they are, prove remarkably adept at hiding behind walls. With the archer's ammunition expended and very few enemy troops killed, Takahisa decides that an assault on the castle would not be feasible and reluctantly withdraws to meet with reinforcements sent from home.
https://img222.imageshack.us/img222/4521/shogun22011040623293620.jpg (https://img222.imageshack.us/i/shogun22011040623293620.jpg/)
https://img840.imageshack.us/img840/3589/savingh.jpg (https://img840.imageshack.us/i/savingh.jpg/)
OOC: And with that rather pathetic display the first session ended for Shimazu. Battles are rather quick in this game. I'm going to have to work harder to take more pics, or maybe use the slow button more often.
Both clans have made their beginning moves to consolidate and do so quickly. Perhaps their progress might be stymied after taking out this beginning foes?

Ok, so here is update #2 from the Chosokabe, part 1.
With the Kono vanquished, all that remains is to take Iyo.

https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-09_00002-1.jpg
https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-09_00003.jpg
Chosokabe Kunichika is developing his skills.
https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-09_00004.jpg
I like to move further.
https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-09_00007.jpg
And this sword looks cool so I'll have that...
https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-09_00008.jpg
Aha, those Sogo are now back on their own turf. Better fix up Iyo while I think of it.
https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-09_00012.jpg
And how about we build some stables here too.
https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-09_00012.jpg
Having mastered Zen (for the markets) I now turn to Bushido.
https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-09_00013.jpg
Then out of the blue comes the news that the dastardly Miyoshi have attacked my new-found allies the Sogo! I chose to go to war.
https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-09_00014.jpg
I'm an attacking kind of Daimyo.
https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-09_00042.jpg
Chosokabe Kunichika is on the move.

My first Metsuke, at Tosa.
https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-09_00045.jpg
And now to hire some trade ships and try to get some of the nodes.
https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-09_00047.jpg
Couple of turns later, off I go.
https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-09_00051.jpg

The Daimyo plunges headlong into enemy territory.
https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-09_00086.jpg
But the Miyoshi conquer my ally the poor ill-fated Sogo, disrupting my trade in the process.

https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-09_00088.jpg

https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-09_00100.jpg
This is my big chance to take out the Miyoshi! All I need to do is beat Zim in this battle and the road to their capital lies open to me.

https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-09_00103.jpg
Things get really really hectic here. Inexperienced in MP and keen to push the issue I bring my archers out of the cover of the trees, negating my advantage. Then, as their light cavalry run down and slaughter my archers and their yari approach, I utterly panic and throw my general(s) into the fray, losing most of their units, getting them killed and causing my army to rout en masse.
I really miss the pause button.
https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-09_00104.jpg
A disastrous result for the Chosomonkey. Instead of their capital being at my mercy, the roles are reversed and Tosa lies defenseless. My Daimyo is dead and his wife takes over. The session ends.

Ouch!
Out-numbered and out-gunned :(
That would have been a tough battle against the AI let alone a MP pro.
I am curious though...did the Chosomonky remember to turn "Skirimish" on? It's default is Off. (not that it really works anyhow :p) Light cavalry tends to make a mess of archers unless you are very quick seeing the charge and reacting.
Has the makings of a good opera so far! Act1: Lands regained and sweet revenge; Act2: The Quixotic rush to new lands and flush of Victory!; Act3: Tragedy!!!...Act4: We're not dead yet!?
Good story so far :) and the seats are comfy

I had skirmish turned off on purpose, but I don't remember why now...
In our brief test game I stopped your small horde of archers from firing several volleys by chasing them back with cavalry.
I had skirmish turned off on purpose, but I don't remember why now...
I hope that isn't in reference to me. I'm pretty hopeless in MP. Way back I think I played a couple MTW1 and RTW games with a friend against the AI. And when I say a couple that's meant literally. :clown:

By the way Zim and I are going to add pics to each other's battles (because we are both snapping away) - but we can't do it in here, only in the Throne Room thread where we have mod access. So we'll post here to let you know we did it and you can check them there.
And now for further adventures of the mighty Zimazu.
When we left off Daimyo Takahisa had very wisely decided not to pursue the assault on Ito's last province. After meeting with some reinforcements heturned toward the city again only to find the cowardly dogs had dared to recruit more defenders from outlying village the brief time he was away. This could not go unpunished. The city was laid siege again, this time with the intent to let the Ito sweat it out a few months before attacking.
Surprisingly, the Ito decide to attack him next season.

Undaunted, the Shimazu forces array for battle.
https://img705.imageshack.us/img705/3786/itobattle2.jpg (https://img705.imageshack.us/i/itobattle2.jpg/)
During the upcoming battle Hyuga looms in the distance, reminding both sides of what was at stake.
https://img69.imageshack.us/img69/5236/itobattle4.jpg (https://img69.imageshack.us/i/itobattle4.jpg/)
Ito troops on the march, including the elite Samurai retainers of their daimyo.

https://img4.imageshack.us/img4/9315/itobattle5.jpg (https://img4.imageshack.us/i/itobattle5.jpg/)
The Shimazu prepare to face the Ito horde.
https://img857.imageshack.us/img857/2948/itobattle6.jpg (https://img857.imageshack.us/i/itobattle6.jpg/)
Unsurprisingly, the Ito break quickly after a few volleys of arrows and charges by the junior general's cavalry. The remainder of the Ito flee back to Hyuga.
https://img683.imageshack.us/img683/9371/itobattle7.jpg (https://img683.imageshack.us/i/itobattle7.jpg/)
https://img843.imageshack.us/img843/3798/itobattle8.jpg (https://img843.imageshack.us/i/itobattle8.jpg/)
Naturally the Daimyo decides to strike at Hyuga while the defenders are weak from the battle.
https://img843.imageshack.us/img843/3798/itobattle8.jpg (https://img843.imageshack.us/i/itobattle8.jpg/)
Brave man that he is, Takahisa decides to dismount and join the assault.
https://img560.imageshack.us/img560/8595/hyuga2.jpg (https://img560.imageshack.us/i/hyuga2.jpg/)
https://img52.imageshack.us/img52/8353/hyuga3t.jpg (https://img52.imageshack.us/i/hyuga3t.jpg/)
Ugh, legendary Daimyo he may be, but he's not as young as he used to be.
https://img52.imageshack.us/img52/8353/hyuga3t.jpg (https://img52.imageshack.us/i/hyuga3t.jpg/)
Of course, while Takahisa may be brave he isn't stupid. arhcers had whittled down the few defenders before he made his glorious escalade.
https://img26.imageshack.us/img26/8449/hyuga4.jpg (https://img26.imageshack.us/i/hyuga4.jpg/)
With the defeat of the last of the enemy bodyguard Hyuga was now a Shimazu possession.

Update 2, Mark 2.
Takahisa was quite perturbed to discover his ally Sagara had ringed him in by conquering all the provinces his lands now neighbored. Left with nothing to do he turned to that most unwarlike and therefore dull task, catching up on his nations economic, cultural, and diplomatic progress.
Hmmm, ally Sagara has accepted some strange foreign religion. Why couldn't they stick with the much more Japanese Buddhism? My advisors say that religion came from China, but still it was an old imported tradition. Completely different from this new one. Having been in Japan so long made it respectable.
https://img853.imageshack.us/img853/9291/sagara.jpg (https://img853.imageshack.us/i/sagara.jpg/)
A son comes of age. Surely he will be a great warrior like his father.
https://img198.imageshack.us/img198/5518/sason.jpg (https://img198.imageshack.us/i/sason.jpg/)
A trade deal with the "Chosokabe"? What clan is this? They sound barbaric. Well, no doubt they will bow in time to the Shimazu, might as well take their money by their consent for now until we can take it by force.
https://img62.imageshack.us/img62/428/satradedeals.jpg (https://img62.imageshack.us/i/satradedeals.jpg/)
Way of the Sword? Maybe research is more valuable than I first thought.

Lol, I think it was me. We both needed the cash! and it was in our truce phase so what the heck, right?
I will have another update up later today or tomorrow. We've started fighting now but there's still a bunch more to update you on before we get to that...

Chosomonkey Update #3, part 1
The Daimyo's grieving wife takes over the running of the clan. Hopefully she is a better leader than the dear departed husband, although I note she doesn't come with a free unit of heavy cavalry..
https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-09_00106-1.jpg
In fact, her first move is to try to get peace with the dastardly (and rather rude) Miyoshi.

https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-09_00109-1.jpg
pleasepleaseplease....oh. Well, they got her gender right anyways..
https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-09_00110-1.jpg
The Chosokabe still have some troops and plenty of cash to recruit more, so a recruitment drive is underway and everyone in the field is ordered back to Tosa for a last stand defence.

To the nodes!
https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-09_00139.jpg
Miyoshi have missed their chance for a quick strike on Tosa - now I have a full stack in there.
https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-09_00140.jpg
My ninja gives me a look at what's still at Awa. Basically everything they have.
https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-09_00143.jpg
Ok, so it's time to go on the offensive again.

It occurs to me that I might be able to solve my Daimyo problem. Why didn't I think of this before?!

This is where I learn the ultimate truth I've been searching for all these years: Miyoshi are campers.
https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-10_00033.jpg
Still camping.
https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-10_00034.jpg
Some hippies arrive at Tosa in a floating bathtub bearing trinkets, beads and string. They smell like patchouli oil and the Daimyo's wife is not impressed with their beards and grubby sandals.
Send them away! Dirty hippies...
https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-10_00037.jpg
Hold on, someone has left the camp!
https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-10_00038.jpg
That was dumb.
https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-10_00039.jpg
Camping Miyoshi suffer unusual accidents.
https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-10_00043.jpg
And while they camp out at Awa, I waltz round the back and take that other place.

https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-10_00057.jpg
A welcome break in the form of a trade agreement with those weirdos the Ikko Ikki
(srsly, what's wrong with them?)

Mastery of Form is essential to a balanced life.
https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-10_00069.jpg
Finally I get sick of the Miyoshi campers and besiege Awa.
https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-10_00072.jpg
And eventually they grow a pair and come out to face me.

And I added some photos to Zim's second update - only in the Throne Room thread (see link in first post)
Ugh, way too long with no update.
Update 3
The mighty Daimyo of the Shimazu is bored. Many seasons have passed by without a battle. His land is ringed in by a greedy ally who swooped in and took land he had been eyeing (quite unlike the glorious expansion of his own territory in the meantime). Even worse, they had joined a foreign religion and made enemies of all of Japan. Surely it was a matter of time before someone else conquered them. Perhaps we ought to relieve them of their territory, so that it would fall to a friend and not an enemy that would misuse their land and people?
https://img695.imageshack.us/img695/779/shogun22011040900231454.png (https://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/695/shogun22011040900231454.png/)
https://img191.imageshack.us/img191/5039/shogun22011040900232591.png (https://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/191/shogun22011040900232591.png/)
Having made his decision, the Daimyo cancels his alliance with Sagara and declares war, quickly striking at their southern territory.
https://img638.imageshack.us/img638/593/shogun22011040900324754.png (https://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/638/shogun22011040900324754.png/)
Having recently opened trade relations with the barbaric Chosokabe, the Daimyo has heard they rely on archers to win their battles. Perhaps that could work here?
https://img823.imageshack.us/img823/5277/shogun22011040900403253.png (https://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/823/shogun22011040900403253.png/)
Hmmm, perhaps their enemies are also not bright enough to seek shelter from a hail of arrows.
https://img34.imageshack.us/img34/5499/shogun22011040900414013.png (https://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/34/shogun22011040900414013.png/)
Once the opposing forces have been whittled to nearly nothing, spear ashigaru burn and storm one of the gates. While their willingness to run through a burning gate does not speak well of his troops' intelligence, at least it does of their enthusiasm.
The few remaining defenders are quckly overrun.
https://img41.imageshack.us/img41/9081/shogun22011040900465448.png (https://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/41/shogun22011040900465448.png/)

Reclining in the main hall of his new castle, the Daimyo receives shocking news. One of his sons, on a scouting mission, ran into a huge Sagara army. He did not survive the ensuing battle.
https://img98.imageshack.us/img98/1376/shogun22011040901001501.png (https://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/98/shogun22011040901001501.png/)
Knowing he could not face down this army but unwilling to relinquish a chance for vengeance, he sends his other son Yoshisasa to come in on the Sagara capital from the north and bait their main force away so it can be taken. He is successful in this, but perhaps too much. The Sagara leader persues him relentlessly and catches up to his large but ill equipped army. It does not go well.
Yoshisasa sets his men up on a wooded hill in hopes of taking advantage of his archer superiority. The Sagara general will have none of this and shortly orders a charge. The Shimazu peasant army is massacred and another Shimazu heir falls.

The plan succeeds but even after doubling Shimazu territory for the second time in a few years the victory feels hollow.

Chosomonkey Update #4
To recap following our long hiatus, we Chosomonkey are currently engaged in a struggle to the death with the camping Miyoshi.

Maybe we'll go take a look...

https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-16_00009.jpg
A perplexing outcome.
https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-16_00018.jpg
With the actual war between us being the most interesting point and with so much ground to cover reaching it, I'm going to do a shortened history of the Shimazu up to the current conflict.
An abridged history of the Shimazu:
Both tragedy and success would follow the Shimazu over the next few years. The Daimyo Shimazu Takahisa would fall taking his vengeance on the now rebels who killed his son, but his successor Hirotsune would lead the clan to new victories and recognition by the royal court.
https://img683.imageshack.us/img683/6471/shogun22011040920184799.jpg (https://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/683/shogun22011040920184799.jpg/)
https://img843.imageshack.us/img843/2821/shogun22011040919471305.jpg (https://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/843/shogun22011040919471305.jpg/)
Daimyo Takahisa would war with the Shoni for control of the island they both called home. After a string of victories the Shoni were pushed back to the coast, holding only the city of Buzen. However, Takahisa and his new appointed heir Mitsuaki had overstretched their territories, and knew they would not be able to hold up against a counteroffensive. So the Daimyo sued for peace, allowing the Shoni their outpost in exchange for recognition of his rule over the rest of the island.
https://img35.imageshack.us/img35/5052/shogun22011040921004947.jpg (https://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/35/shogun22011040921004947.jpg/)
https://img21.imageshack.us/img21/1553/shogun22011040921133001.jpg (https://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/21/shogun22011040921133001.jpg/)
https://img847.imageshack.us/img847/1272/shogun22011040921143409.jpg (https://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/847/shogun22011040921143409.jpg/)
The Shimazu's new borders.
https://img13.imageshack.us/img13/2012/newborders.jpg (https://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/13/newborders.jpg/)
For a time the Shimazu would be mostly inwardly focused. Their one aggressive act in this period was to relieve the failing state of the Miyoshi of their trade node, bringing Koku much needed for development.
https://img153.imageshack.us/img153/5390/shogun22011041001250362.jpg (https://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/153/shogun22011041001250362.jpg/)

Otherwise, they studied new technologies, and a monastic center was built in Hyuga for the enlightenment of the Shimazu people and to counteract the preaching of the unwashed foreigners that were bringing such wealth to the lands of the Daimyo.
https://img690.imageshack.us/img690/5218/shogun22011041001492889.jpg (https://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/690/shogun22011041001492889.jpg/)

Of course, military technologies were not ignored. The foreigners brought with them weapons using gunpowder that showed promise, and larger ships were built to protect the Daimyo's trade interests.
https://img198.imageshack.us/img198/9454/shogun22011041522190148.jpg (https://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/198/shogun22011041522190148.jpg/)

It is likely this peaceful age could have continued for many more years were it not for the treachery of the foul Chosokabe. An agent, one of the assassins known as ninjas, was landed right in front of the Shimazu clan's biggest port, no doubt seeking to blend in before making his way to the Daimyo to assassinate him. For the preservation of their honor the Daimyo would have to make war upon these honorless dogs!

Chosomonkey update #5: The War of the Islands Commences
On his return, the ninja's evident confusion simply added to the sense of forebodeing at Chosomonkey HQ.

His tales of bearded stinking hippy-types with crosses and an encounter with a strange old man in a large hat convinced the Daimyo that a declaration of war by these strange and degenerate Zimazu would soon follow.
And so like all good Chosomonkey Daimyos, he threw caution to the wind....

Unfortunately, so did the Kikkawa.

Almost as if they had been planning to strike all along, the Shimazu landed an invasion fleet! On the hallowed shores of Iyo! The dastardly, ungodly, dishonourable, hippy-loving, beatnik so-and-sos...

The Daimyo rode out to meet them.

Meanwhile, somewhere in the heaving waters of the ocean a naval conflict was brewing. The prize? The very nodes themselves!
https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-17_00020.jpg
The Chosomonkey sailors made pretty shapes in the water with their ships, convinced this would win them the day.

The Zimazu were more direct. Clearly their close contact with nanban gaijin and their barbarous combat techniques had rubbed off.

A second node came under attack.

The Chosomonkey naval command decided similar tactics were in order. For why change your style of battle simply because it results in crushing defeat?

Similar events unfurled.

Zimazu captains prove rather less competent than the troops they carry, and try to batter through surrendered ships rather than go around.

By the time they sort things out, the remainder of the Chosomonkey fleet is well on its way to the magical red lines beyond which they cannot be chased.

But a slightly better outcome was gained. Still, the second node was lost. O woe!

Never mind. Koku aren't useful for anything anyway, right?
Right?

:laugh4: That's some very funny reading, well done, both of you.
Be interesting to see how the battle goes. There's a little bit of a power skew - sure the Zimasu have more land, wealth and soldiers, but the Chosomonkies are in touch with their inner simian. Historically, the monkey (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyotomi_Hideyoshi) won.

Damn! It's too late for me to include that in the guide. Maybe I can edit ...
Unfortunately, so did the Kikkawa.
https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-17_00007-1.jpg
The Zimasu would just like to preemptively state that they have no idea why the good and noble Kikkawa might attack the filthy and treacherous Chosomonkeys. Perhaps the latter's baseness and lack of honor have made them a target?

A mini update for the first big battle between our factions.
In response to the Chosokabe's landing of an assassin on Shizamu soil the trade agreement with them was ended. Generous terms were offered for its renewal, but for some reason they not only did they refuse, they declared war.
https://img69.imageshack.us/img69/3550/shogun22011041700082311.jpg (https://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/69/shogun22011041700082311.jpg/)
So the Zimazu prepared for war with the Chosomonkey dogs. Our port towns filled with the sound of industry as two mighty fleets were put together. The stories of their victories as they drove the Chosokabe from their trade nodes is chronicled elsewhere, but not yet told is the fate of the invasion of Shikoku that followed. A mighty force was put together under the heir Mitsuaki and landed near Iyo.
Shortly after, its leader was found dead in his tent. Clearly the Chosomonkey knew that if Mitsuaki lived their cowardly troops would lack the courage to attack the army of such a stalwart general, or so the new commander Hongo Nobunori told himself. Then again, he also told himself things couldn't get any worse...
https://img856.imageshack.us/img856/3738/shogun22011041704422216.jpg (https://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/856/shogun22011041704422216.jpg/)
Undaunted by the greater numbers, he arrayed his troops on a hill preparing to meet the charge of the ill disciplined rabble that made up the Chosomonkey army.
https://img809.imageshack.us/img809/5729/shogun22011041704484104.jpg (https://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/809/shogun22011041704484104.jpg/)
https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-17_00052.jpg
Before moving up the hill, several units of archers were ordered to put up obstacles to stmy charges.
https://img685.imageshack.us/img685/5995/shogun22011041704485501.jpg (https://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/685/shogun22011041704485501.jpg/)

After exchanging volleys of fire the Chosomonkeys came on in a great horde. Norunobi's archers spread out seeking better firing points to take as many of the enemy with them as possible, while his cavalry went hunting after the enemy general.
https://img841.imageshack.us/img841/5371/shogun22011041705000326.jpg (https://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/841/shogun22011041705000326.jpg/)
The Zimasu cavalry were successful in their hunt, ambushing an enemy general that came to reinforce the enemy. Knowing that the battle was over, Norunobi ordered the retreat. Against superior numbers and with their leader so recently assassinated, the Zimasu had still injured their enemy greatly and inflicted far more losses than they took. For now that was the only victory that could be had.

Chosomonkey update #6: Mopping Up
With the Zimazu invasion force roundly defeated it just remained to mop up the survivors before they could board ship and flee.
The Daimyo, growing in influence and stature all the time, ordered his ninjas to stop the enemy army from leaving while he could make up ground on them and wipe them out.
https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-17_00056.jpg
https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-17_00057.jpg
https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-17_00058.jpg
Then he moved in for the kill.
https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-23_00002.jpg
The enemy force was hiding on a hill in some trees, true to their nature, the honourless cowards.
https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-23_00004.jpg
The battle was short but still the enemy escaped with a small force.
https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-23_00005.jpg
https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-23_00008.jpg
And so the Daimyo ordered his troops in without him and on the military advisors' advice stayed back in order to preserve the family line and the leadership of the mighty Chosomonkey clan.
https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-23_00009.jpg
At least that's what they thought. Unbeknownst to his wise military advisors the brave and somewhat hotheaded Chosomonkey Daimyo slipped out the back of his tent and rode off to join the battle...alone...arriving just in time and just on the wrong side of the battlefield to be caught and killed by the honourless dog Zimazus, to the stunned disbelief of his army.
https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/2011-04-23_00010.jpg
It was a bittersweet moment for the Chosomonkeys. Their invading foe was vanquished but their Daimyo had fallen.....again....
EDIT: also new pics in the last two updates, courtesy of each other
Please continue I want to see the chosomonkeys crushed
