The very main reason that puts me off from investing in high quality units is not their fixed/variable cost, but rather their recruitment times.
Can you name which features subtract from them ?
I believe the Master Dojos and Legendary Schools reduce their respective samurai build times by 1 turn.
Master dojo+ gives you 1 turn recruitment for samurai. Sadly, it does not work for warrior monks.
I don't really see an issue with recruitment times after I get into the mid part of the game as you rarely completely lose a unit, and if you keep building at full speed you can exceed your income with your troop upkeep.

I would agree except that I've managed to get some 4th Kawanakajima like results. When I lose 80% of my army (and win!) it takes a really long time to rebuild the army I've lost.

Wow Azi, you must be playing on Iron Man (no reloading). Me, I reload if I totally screw something up.
It's really hard to have a pyrrhic victory that way, hehe.
I don't recall any victories or even defeats where I would have lost 80% of a Samurai heavy full stack - the reason being that most of those battles should be simple to win if your units enter at good condition. If your stack is not samurai heavy, then you can make up the losses with ashigaru from several provinces (And anyway you have 1 turn recruit time).
I play on hard battle difficulty.
