Ok, going to sleep at 5 in the AM isn't conducive to much of anything
Has anyone tried melatonin?
Becuase the only way I seem to be able to fall asleep lately is by knocking back a pint or 12
Not very conducive to much of anything either

Melatonin pills don't work too well for me, though clearly they must work to some degree if there's a large market for it. The only thing that kills my insomnia is Ambien. lol.

Might be time for a sleep study, could be sleep apnea.
I've tried melatonin. Made me fall asleep faster, but seemingly also made me wake up too early in the morning (though I have good reasons to believe that there might not be a connection here, after all).

Melatonin can help. But, insomnia can be caused by many different things, such as anxiety, stress, etc. It may or may not work for you. If it is really bad see a GP.
I also get insomnia infrequently, but that links to my anxiety, I just avoid all forms of caffeine and take a couple Valium and that knocks me right out.

Well, I often don't get to sleep until 4-5 these days. I find reading helps a lot, you quickly get to that stage where your mind drifts off and your still reading but not really taking it in, then you nod off...

For some reason I wasn't able to fall asleep at all in my bed at school this past year. I blame the bed. For whatever reason, it just wasn't happening.
Tried melatonin, it worked great.

Other than a certain illegal substance, melatonin has been the best thing I've found to combat insomnia. I was getting 2-3 hours of sleep one summer, which as you can imagine made life painful. I started using melatonin and slept for 6-8 hours. I still use it. It does work.

If I stay up that late, i just make it an all-nighter til bout 7-8am, then when you're doing stuff the rest of the day, you will randomly fall asleep, despite your best attempts not to. very exciting for passengers while driving!

I've tried melatonin. It didn't seem to have much an effect, personally.

I've had insomnia issues for a long time. Either I have trouble falling asleep or I wake up at 4am and can't go back to sleep.
Do you exercise regularly? I find that if I go too long w/o exercising, I don't sleep as well. I haven't tried melatonin because it's a hormone and I don't want to take extra hormones. But, i've used OTC sleeping pills like Nytol, but they can be habit forming. I had this issue because when I took the pill, I felt more certain that I was going to be able to fall asleep, and so I did. I think someone could have clandestinely replaced my pills w/ tic tacs and I still would have slept. It was all in my head.
What works for me now is to GET OUT OF BED if I can't sleep. I go into a different room, turn the lights on low, and read the most boring book I can possibly find for 20 minutes, and then I go back to bed. Usually I'll go to sleep at that point. The key is to get out of bed if you don't fall asleep w/in a reasonable amount of time. Otherwise, you'll associate your bed with not being able to sleep, which will make the insomnia worse. Also, if noise keeps you up, use earplugs. I read somewhere that insomniacs fall asleep easier with complete darkness. I use a sleep mask sometimes, and it helps.

Listen to what is said, and take it to heart. Even if you do not read a boring book, just getting out of bed for a little while is disgustingly helpful.
I found when I couldn't sleep I would lie in bed and listen to classical music. Chopin put me to sleep on many a occasion. After the album had finished that is. Something soft and delicate. Harp music definately does the trick for me! :D

Ditto.
Although I've made a habit of taking whiskey shots instead.
The solution, I'm told, is to wake up early one day, no matter how awful it feels. Exert yourself physically, a lot, and then go to sleep at 10 pm by the latest after a glass of warm milk.
Never tried it though....whiskey works fine.

Don't fall into that alcohol as a sleep aid trap. Get a sleep study done if you are experiencing long term sleep problems. I was diagnosed with severe obstructive sleep apnea a month ago. I've probably had it for 10 years or more. Many of my health problems are associated with this sleep deprivation. It's nothing to mess with and can kill you. I've been functioning on catnaps for years and didn't realize how lousy I've felt, just thouht it was "old age" creeping up on me, till I started using this CPAP machine over the last few days. Now I sleep throughout the night and get that deep restful REM sleep that I haven't experienced for so long I forgot what it was like.

Hehehe, yeah I'm one sexy beast now. After a couple of weeks of normal sleep I should be less grumpy too....maybe.

I find that beer before bed helps. It seems to be the only way to drown the pain. Either that or crying all night in despair.
There must be a better way.
