The Supreme Court on Thursday upheld an Arizona law that allows the state to shut down businesses that hire illegal immigrants, a ruling arising from the fierce national debate on immigration policy.

I've never understood the logic of deporting thousands of brown people, this is what works. Raise the stakes on the buisness owners and corners won't be cut

Even better - we can deport the brown people and punish those that employ them!

Excellent. Laws are for everybody, including businesses.

One employs an illegal to gain an unfair advantage over one's competitors. To avoid social legislation, and because one prefers workers without rights.
Or occasionaly to help some people out...

It's funny how left and right impulses are so often reversed on this subject - the right supports granting powers to the government for more regulation and interference with the free market, and the left defends the right of businesses to be above the law, just because this is about brown people.

Why was it a problem in the first place having illegal immigrants working?

No really, I do wonder.

* Americans probably have some sort of social security number.
* Tie the salary to the social security number.
* Crack down hard on companies trying to circumvent it.

Problem solved.

Not only does it work against illegal immigration, but also people working without paying taxes.

I <3 hardballMe, I would've quoted the following sentences as the essence of the ruling:

The Arizona law suspends or revokes licenses to do business in the state to penalize employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants. It requires employers to use an electronic verification system to check the work-authorization status of employees through federal records.

Why waste the rescources on persuing the fringe poor? This will work 10x better for 1/10 of the cash. Sure if the land on your lap, send'em home but why waste gold for pewter?

My favorite part is how the discourse is always about how the immgrant is undercutting wages when in reality it's about the buisness sticking it to the tax man, that's why this goes on. Not becuase Jose works for a dime but becuase John want's to screw Uncle Sam

And now we will take his buisness from him. Excellent and fair play IMO. It's about time the government found its teeth.

Having dealt with it, it's really hard to fight and companies aren't always to blame. It's identidy fraud mostly, the person who does the working isn't the one you hired, and it's really hard to see the difference. You wouldn't believe how nasty it can be I could have saved a life or two if I had it noticed earlier, there are people who make money with accidents mostly Nigerian gangs

@Fragony, read a bit further: this is about businesses which knowingly hire illegal immigrants.

One area this law wont solve is with the self employed which is the most likely route for immigrant employment, of course if an immigrant is self employed then they prob should be lauded for creating there own job, having said that it's good that this loophole is to be closed and kept closed.

You then use someone else's number to work. very easy to do and no one it seems bothers to see if people are doing it.

They already does this.

They already do this, but as Rory has mentioned, there are ways around it.

On income that's on the w2, yeah probably, but it's kind of hard to track money that's paid under the table.

Many illegal immigrants, especially those working in agriculture, get paid in cash. It's seasonal work and then they move on. Hard to track when there's not much political will to do so. Maybe the upholding of this law will get the ball rolling.

I would prefer a follow up bill to create a more comprehensive way of having illegals prove themselves through work or military service to becomes citizens and have the legal immigration process sped up a lot more. Common complaints from my 2nd generation classmates in high school was that the waiting list for legal immigrants was so long and filled with red tape it would have taken their parents less time to get the money to smuggle themselves onto a ship and sneak off at port.

It has been long standing US policy to prevent any commies in Latin America from changing this situation.

Never understood your obsession with people having an obsession with brown people, is that the only explanation you can accept? Anything else is simply impossible?
