Does anyone know what are the benefits for a unit per chevron gain? As I was fighting an army of 4 to 5 xp level samurais with weapon and morale upgrades and they don't even waver when both their generals ran away. Only manage to cause a portion to rout after killing the third and last general. But those who routed are the numerical inferior units who had suffered the worst of my offense.
My army is a mix of greenhorns to level 2 veterans. Are units with level 4 xp onwards, fearless demons that will even spit in the face of the devil?
Experience adds to the melee attack, melee defence, missile reload skill, morale and missile accuracy stats. Starting at level 5, it also influences the fatigue stat.
For instance, level 4 XP adds +4 to melee attack, +3 to melee defence, +8 to missile reload skill, +3 to morale and +8 to missile accuracy, level 5 XP adds +4 to melee attack, +5 to melee defence, +10 to missile reload skill, +3 to morale and +10 to missile accuracy and -1 to fatigue
All detailed information can be found in the Encyclopedia.

Also come here to understand how to put the pieces together. Normally there is a rock for the oppositions scissors.
