View Full Version : I need a game reccomendation

So over the summer (starting tomorrow actually) I will be in Florida, partially with and partially without the majority of my family.
I will be bringing my computer but not my Playstation or Xbox, but I would still like to have something to play just in case I get completely bored.
What I'm looking for is basically something like Bad Company 2, that sort of gameplay style I mean, and definitely revolves around multiplayer. I'd really love to have good graphics, but I can settle considering my computer isn't able to handle what it used to.
I would get Red Orchestra, but I have no idea where to find it :/.
suggestions?

Steam.
Steam.
Pretty much, just install steam and do a search through the platform. It'll pop up, if you have some money you'll be able to buy it on the service.

has anyone here played it and would reccomend it? i know its supposed to be good but not sure if its for super hardcore guys or on a bit lower level than that

Just realize that Red Orchestra is... different, from the usual FPS. It requires a completely different set of tactics and you have to expect to be either prone for most of a match or behind a wall.
I'd recommend Battlefield 2 - it's six years old now so it should run fine on any computers these days and is simply brilliance, even better with a few mods like Forgotten Hope 2 or Project Reality to spice up the gameplay. The Complete Package should be around $20 on Steam now. (Though don't pay more for the Complete Package, as all those expansions have been released for free on the internet!)
Edit: In response to above post... it's not for 'super hardcore' but it takes some getting used to when travelling over from Bad Company. Once you learn how to not die in the first minute of the game the intensity is something unrivalled in most other games.

I tried playing BF2...it didnt work on my computer like AT ALL. it coulda easily been that my download was cutting in and out and resulted in crap quality, but is there a demo i can try to see if it'll run pretty well?

If you like realism it's awesome

It's fun, and not "super hardcore". It is realistic, and that takes some adapting, but it's not obstinately difficult to play.

There were almost no views after a pretty large amount of time, and it didnt seem like there was any interest in a LP of such a mainstream game :/

Careful with EU- try the demo first before committing. Its not for everyone.
I'd say that's pretty fair. However, if you play it and you find yourself thinking you might like it if you can get to grips with it, now is the best time to get it, given the offer I linked.

If you like Total War games and are savvy enough to sign up for an internet forum EU3 is for you. You just may not realize it yet.

I will second ATPG's recommendation. No zoomed in battles, but the depth of the campaign is fantastic.

You confused me for a minute there with that acronym, CR.

Dice rolling combat takes some serious getting used to, and it still makes me rage sometimes to watch my 5 star general get trashed because I rolled triple 1's. God. But even so, you're absolutely right. EU3 is a fantastic game, so long as you can get over the learning curve. Which isn't that bad really, you just gonna approach the game a lot differently than a TW game.

Sorry, I'm not really into the EU games. Just not to my fancy :/.
I think I'll just download Red Orchestra after my Sweden campaign in E:TW is finished.
But what about:
Beyond Good and Evil (http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/beyond_good_and_evil)
Baldur's Gate (http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/baldurs_gate_the_original_saga)and Baldur's Gate II (http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/baldurs_gate_2_complete)

If you are looking for an RTS, I suggest Dawn of War. Truly amazing, and the MP is also great, if there are still people playing, which I will assume there are. Its an old game, like 2004-ish, but the graphics hold up to something 2006-ish.

Rather difficult for a new player though, probably best left until after a few vanilla campaigns. I do prefer Brytenwalda myself, new version coming out in just over two weeks looks like it's going to be superb.

I looked at Brytenwalda but I couldnt figure out what the mod changed.
What doesn't it change, it's full conversion akin to how different EB is from vanilla RTW (actually more so as it isn't even in the same setting as vanilla). I would recommend you just play vanilla to get used to it, the difficulty shoots up with Brytenwalda and PoP, or use the Diplomacy mod (http://forums.taleworlds.com/index.php/board,176.0.html) which only adds small features (Staff to help run your realm etc) to the game and is part of pretty much every major mod out there.

lol what are you serious?
hooah you make me laugh you have to be kidding.
just download it and you will be able to see.
also pop is a little cleaner and imho more enjoyable but quite a bit harder.
PLAY NATIVE FIRST. so you can learn how and also get your fills worth. (both the mods i recommended make the game much much harder)

Yeah sure, mock me.
Anyways, after three hours of playing I think I can safely say that I love this game.
My campaign began simple enough, with me taking simple quests for people to get money so I could hire more men.
Then I really made the king of Swadia mad when he asked me to collect taxes for him. Instead of giving him the 7,000 I collected, I used it to buy new equipment for myself. Oops. Now he is out to get me. So I fled Swadia with my 35 men and went to the Nords. Since it was basically a wasteland, I went to the Vaegirs. Too cold. Left for the purple people, I forget their name, but it was too foreign for a Swadia man. Then I went to Rhodok. The king asked me to run a few errands and kill some mountain men, and then asked me to join him in his war against the Sarranids and Swadia.
So thats where I am now, raiding Swadian towns and caravans, and fighting a war that doesnt really care for. Soldier of fortune indeed. Though the armor that I got with Swadian coin looks nice.

Hooahguy
06-30-2011, 08:10
Though I am truly impressed at the depth of the campaign, in the sense that I keep asking myself, "whats the objective? Conquer the world?" Like thats gonna happen."
Also I never try mods until at least a week after I get the game. This way I can enjoy-or not- vanilla before I get my mind blown by mods.
Centurion1
06-30-2011, 08:19
thats actually a topic most mods get at especially POP, its such an open ended game its hard to have a main focus.
also yes conquering the entire map is very feasible....... lol.
Hooahguy
06-30-2011, 08:23
Uh, whats POP?
So are you saying that mods have a more focused approach?
Centurion1
06-30-2011, 08:43
sometimes they do.
and pop s prophesy of pendor probably the best total overhaul mod made for warband

One thing I always hated about M&B is that if you didnt use teleport in places with the faster bandits, you were pretty much screwed. And then when you finally get a kingdom and an army big enough that you dont have to worry about bandits attacking you, other kingdoms constantly raid your villages and run away before you can catch them. So annoying.

Agreed, though Im not even at that stage yet. Im still a hired blade, though technically Im allied with the Rhodoks.
Also, Im annoyed how long it takes for things to load, even though I go well past the recommended specs.
Also, can anyone give me advice on how to get recognition from kings and counts? Ive fought like 3 major battles but still no recognition. I want to join a feast and meet some ladies .

Some critical system file got erased. And since the last time I sent in my laptop to Dell to fix (over 2 years ago) they selfishly kept the Windows XP installation CD and the drivers CD, so I had no way to get anything back. In the end a friend had an extra copy of XP, but it had nothing on it but the bare basics, no internet, no graphics, nothing.
So no way to use it anymore. So Im just going to buy a desktop for like $350.
Centurion1
07-01-2011, 05:08
but you cant play any games on a 350 dollar computer really. Some of the mods for warband made my school laptop scream at the absolute minimum settings and i have 4gb ram, 3.0ghz processor speed, a decent graphics card, etc.
Also note i defrag my computer weekly and warband is literally the only game installed right now AND only one mod at a time. What are you going to be able to play at 350$

Well heres the deal: I leave for Israel in like 2 months. In Israel I cant bring a laptop or anything of the sort. So there is no point in buying a really nice computer for the next 2 months. Id prefer an ok computer that can play really the only two games I play right now, BC2 and Warband.
Any suggestions?

What do you mean when I come back from Israel? Are you saying I should wait? You are probably right, but I dont really want to wait.
Plus with a CPU I can always manually upgrade, something I couldnt do with my laptop.
And I have a summer job. I get around $50 a day, 6 days a week. Ive been working almost every day for the past month. I have two months until I leave for Israel. Do the math.
And screw it, I dont need to play BC2, all I really want to take my time up is Warband. I spent like 5 hours straight on that, and I only quit because it was 3 in the morning. I think Warband alone can last me until September, when I leave.

yeah i have a satandard card with my computer and all i can find out about it is that it is an integrated hd graphics card which i presume to mean it blows.
that geforce is more than adequate what you really need for warband is ram and processor speed. the numerous troops can kill your computer because of al lthe calculations required for each individual unit.

Wow, an integrated intel card?
Right now on my old crappy desktop is a geforce 5500 FX. Its so bad that I can barely play RTW, when I played it. When I try to play Warband, it lags like hell.

if it is lagging it is probably the processor. plus i have four gigs of ram and the computer is literally devoted to this game. I have EVERYTHING at the lowest settings except for battlesize which is att he max of 150.
i can also play shogun 2 btw.
how many ghz is your processor and what kind?
