As the title says, Team Fortress 2 has gone F2P model several days ago, and I warmly recommend everyone to check the game out. Nobody posted about, thought I'd mention it here.

Yeah, somebody did post about it.
It was in the special offer thread.

Ah, yes, just saw that there was a post about it yesterday. Well, for those who missed that thread, then. Cheers.

TF2 is now the number 1 played game on steam, surpassing even CS: Source by a large margin (at current: 20,000 players). I knew the F2P model would work out for them, but good lord, that's huge.

Still no desire to play it myself. I've got a couple hundred hours logged in on it on various steam accounts. Still, really nice to see it experiencing a revival of sorts.

I'm sure that they'll have lots of those people buying items too, so in the end it really works out for them.

You should give it another go, Monk. It's pretty fun massacring F2P players. ;P

If you guys just payed a little more attention to what was happening around you, I wouldn't get twice the score of the highest player on your team...

Yes. It's not a completely valid distinction, but there are a lot of new players out there and you can tell because they aren't used to the game. Even if they've bought something I think some vets (myself included) consider them "F2P players" - it's not a bad shorthand.

I should get a mic to call out advice, but I'm lazy and I don't want people to here me yelling in the middle of the night.

hehe, just need to adapt a little more i think. if the situation calls for a medic+heavy combo, then I go for it. if it calls for someone to blow up lots of turrets, I go spy to sap them all. if your team needs turrets or a tele, get it set up with an engineer. its fairly unique in that it definitely requires class change, you cant use the same guys over and over and expect good results all the time. every class has its uses, and you gotta recognize them.

I agree. Just the other day I was playing on Badwater Basin, and as our team was pushing the cart near the first checkpoint, nobody but me figured "Hey, maybe we should stop and take out the 3 turrets aimed at the exit of the tunnel, keeping us from advancing!". So by the time I finally got to kill the turrets (with no support, meaning I died several times and was delayed), we were already left with less than a minute I think. We inevitably lost, but if my team wasn't so dumb we could have won easily.

I do not agree that every class has it's uses; the best classes are Scout, Soldier, Demoman, Medic and IMO Heavy (arguable).

Oh and the community is pretty much dumb, not as dumb as CS:S but close. Especially now it's F2P.

TF2 has dedicated servers, some of which are quite diligently patrolled by admins who ban people who do dumb :daisy: . If you're having problems with the game's "community", you're probably playing on a bad server.

For a while I had a fun and good server, but got banned because I was still hanging around with banned people, who were my friends, who supposedly did awful things to the server owner (who was, as I later discovered paranoid [by reading a log of a banned friend]). I was even admin there for a good three months (plus a year reporting to admins before I had admin rights myself), and I did a lot of monitoring, warning, kicking and eventually if they went to far banning people. I think I can say that I know the community.

When you go to a GTFO server (the "bad" servers) you get the worst, in my experience.

But yeah, even at the good servers you get idiots; one of the admins should be present at all time. Otherwise it turns often in a mess.

That is true of every online community.

I say that, played correctly, each can help their team very well, depending on the situation of course.

For example, a Spy can take out turrets and, when lucky, can take out several Heavies/Medics in one run. A Pyro can not only light up spies, but also push Medics away from Heavies, removing the ubercharge, and is very useful for CQB and clearing out buildings. Snipers usually aren't very useful, but I've gone against a few who really helped their team and kinda annihilated us. Engineers can set up teleporters that allow the team to continually get to the front quickly, rather than running across the map. I know this is a MUST on some payload maps towards the end.

It's a game about team effort for sure.

You owe it to yourself to give it a try, it's easy to get into and gorgeous to look at

You simply named the classes that require no thought to use, so are usually useful even in this new F2P environment.

Every class has its use when its being played correctly.

You're kidding right? No noob can play demoman (with the vanilla weapons, not the chargin' tard + Sword) correctly. Believe me I have played it a lot, and by a lot I mean no-life.

Every class requires thought, even pyro.

Excuse me but the first class I used was Demoman, and though I wouldn't consider myself a noob, I would say it's pretty easy to use. with vanilla weapons.

Mwah, can if you understand you are support. But perfectly balanced like Killzone 3 (very similar) it is not

Demoman is one of the most powerful classes when being used by an expert, but that doesn't mean he's not easy to use doing standard building destruction and area denial.
