irish travellers?
To explain what is happening. Pykies have an ancient tradition, if a man can kidnap a girl and keep her for two days they are married, (marriage by abduction or marriage by capture). They did that so as to avoid paying the bride price to her family.

Gypsys
Odd for us "Country people", decidely nicer and more civilised than they might appear.
The one Gypsy I know best married a "country man" who worked at her father's carnival - it ended VERY badly.
So, I dunno - they seem happy enough and those girls will end up ruling their husabands in most cases.

We did that as well, we even have a word for it 'schaken'. It is still somewhat customary in eastern europe (even in south-east Germany I've been told)

Pikie is the english term for an Irish Traveller they are not Gypsys nor are they even relatedd to them, they used to be called Tinkers because they were travelling tinsmith who mended pots and pans etc as they moved around. (Note it's not pc now to use the term Tinker as the term has became derogatory)
They have a migrated the same as other Irish people to the UK but they have continued to marry within there small group and naturally have not integrated into UK society like other Irish people as a result.
They still have a fairly nomadic culture so the children can tend to have little or no education, there tendancy to intermarry has a few health implications to put it delicately.
One darker aspect of the group is the resort to criminality which can be hard to prevent due to the tightknit structure of the community a policeman from the settled community will never infiltrate there gangs as there all based on blood ties.
video below is about Paddy Doherty Irish Traveller and all round hard man.
this vid has foul language and scens of intimidation and violence definately not safe for work or kids

No that would be Gypsys, it would be considered an insult to the daughter and her family to NOT pay for a lavish and over the top wedding, they take insults very seriously it would lead to very violent and nasty feuding between the families no doubt. A feud in Limerick over a schoolyard fight has involved the four biggest crime gangs in Limerick as a result.

Nah, this isn't the real thing. For Pete's sake, the first girl carried off in that video even holds on to her ciggie all the while.
The woman makes their marital views and practices sound pretty stupid though. A clear case for Dr Darwin, eh?

When you carry your bride over your doorstep you are doing the same thing. The same symbolism, if less obvious, and less forceful. The forceful nature seems to foreshadow a rough marital life of these people. Once married, the man will try to beat the bride into submission, the woman will try to nag hubby into subservience. Which, again, is not so different from mainstream marriages.

They have some very strange beliefs indeed, the wealthy ones will often build a large mansion as a monument to there greatness but they will still live in the caravan out the back.
They love to build very large and often gaudy headstones for the recently breaved members of the family, there generally the biggest headstones in any graveyard.
They also go to Knock shrine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knock_Shrine) every year to express there devotion to Mary and also to scout a marraige partner, this has lead to some anti social behaviour plus a lot of extremly revealing clothing on the women even when inside the Basilica which has raised a few eyebrows.

Why do you people insult the romantic culture of these people?
As Louis already said, we are no better, men go out to "hunt" women, a term that reduces them to animals, and women expect men to beat others up to get them etc.
We're just as bad, life is a struggle and you have to take what you can get!

So if marriage involves 'grabbing' and holding somebody against their will for a minimum of two days... how does one have an indiscreet liason? Grabbing them for the duration of a subway ride?

So does this mean that the sport of wrestling brought gay marriage to the Tinkers centuries before the Law brought it to the rest of us? (Sorry, I can't resist....)
