hey guys, did anyone read tales from the throne room this time? was it any good? what did you like and not like about it?

it's hard to judge whether anyone actually reads it, even though it's on the front page. I had hoped it would draw people in but I don't think anyone has come here because of it...have they?

I'd be interested. What game and mod (if applicable) were you thinking?

Nightbringer

I'd be interested. What game and mod (if applicable) were you thinking?

As for game, RTW or M2TW. In terms of mods, I personally like SS and EB a lot, but would be up for just about anything.

One idea I had for an unusual game though was playing the Americas campaign from the kingdoms expansion.
One player, or I, could act as the King of Spain, while other players play conquistadors who must curry favor with the king for rights to conquer land, financial support, etc...
All income would go to the King, and he could distribute part of it to players to simulate royal backing of their expedition. Ransom and sacking funds could go to individuals.

Individual players would have incentive to go on a rampage and make money off devastating the continent, while the king would try to keep them from letting natives simply take back everything they left behind, and from sacking things so badly that it no longer produces money.

That is just one idea though, and I would honestly be happy to run whatever people are most interested in doing. (unless it is S2TW, or Nap TW because I don't have those games)

Zim
12-12-2011, 09:20
I always thought EB was a perfect setup for rpgs. SS would be fun as well (personally, I'd be slightly more up for a medieval or America campaign setting, but good either way).

The Americas campaign sounds interesting, definately different from past ones. We also had a Teutonic Campaign once upon a time that I thought would work well for a short rpg.

I've always wanted an RPG based around Hungary

Have you seen the Magyar Mod (http://www.twcenter.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=583)? It would be great for that.

Also the Rus - Rusichi Total War (http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=187774) could be awesome for that....or, indeed, you could seek Quirl's permission to revive The Black March (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?135277-Black-March-An-Upcoming-RPG-for-the-Qara-Suu-Kha%C4%9Fanate) which looked to be a killer idea

Nightbringer
12-12-2011, 09:48
I'm not familiar with either of those mods, but would be glad to become so.
Quirl's game idea looks quite awesome I have to say, but I simply do not feel familiar enough with the setting to do it justice.

i will go take a look at those mods you mentioned.

phonicsmonkey
12-12-2011, 09:53
Rusichi is probably more of a finished product. As I understand it the Magyar Mod hasn't added new cavalry units yet, which is a bit of a shame.

The Rusichi mod looks quite cool I have to say, as for the Magyar one, it just seems a little too unfinished from what I see.

In terms of the Rusichi mod, it seems like a pretty standard game would likely work well, and the system they claim for civil war on faction leader death could add some very interesting dynamics.
Was there any specific type of game you wanted phonics, or just something focused on that culture?

Zim
12-12-2011, 10:11
Rusichi was quite tough as I recall, not like that's a bad thing of course.

It is a very cool mod. Personally, I'd be happy with just about anything outside of Central Europe.

I too suffer from central Europe fatigue, unless you go back to antiquity or the classical period. And SS sadly doesn't do the greatest job depicting other cultures accurately, except for the Byzantines.

As for Rusichi, I generally like difficulty, but it might be frustrating for players if people die often.

Zim
12-12-2011, 10:33
I'm not sure how vulnerable generals in particular were, but the mod as a whole was very tough, more so than any other I'd played at . I think if I took it more slowly I would have done better on my one try through, though. I'm used to playing even tough mods on VH/VH half asleep, not through any special skill but just familiarity with the base game.

One note on any mod that portrays the faction we play fairly accurately. After the Last of the Romans game (ERE, SS if I recall) in the post game discussion it was brought up that people had a lot of trouble with the names and this hurt roleplaying. There was also some feeling that we should move to a more familiar faction in general and votes led us back towards Central Europe for the next game (I say "towards" because we ended up with France). That was years ago, though, so I'm not sure if not having heavily anglicised names a la vanilla MTW2 would matter as much now.

Nightbringer
12-12-2011, 10:51
That's a good point, anything that can be typed on a normal qwerty keyboard is fine for me. Beyond that and it just starts to feel like a chore.

Zim
12-12-2011, 11:12
All of the ERE names we had could be typed on a normal keyboard, although pronunciation may have been a bit tough for some.

Some examples, taken from the characters in the final war:

My last character: Arintheos Voutoumatis

-Vartholomaios Ksiros

-Kousinos Sophianos

-Ioannis Komnenos III

I didn't think they were too bad but I can understand why having, for example, 3-4 guys named Ioannis (we did) with different Greek names of varying ease of pronunciation might be more challenging than if they were all named "John". Unfamiliar names with spelling players aren't used may blend together.

Not saying this should be a major factor, just that it came up back then.

phonicsmonkey
12-12-2011, 11:18
if people die often.

I think we can avoid that by making sure people (koff koff ZIM) are aware that charging their characters into banks of spears is unlikely to reap rewards...

I don't recall ever doing anything like that ~:p

My favorite death was my first. Jan van der Pfalz charging into a the rear of a formation of depleted non-spear infantry and dying. I always assumed his horse tripped and he fell off and hit his head.

Here's a couple discussions for what became KotF. The sentiment a few posts down of the second about pronouncing names showed up in both the first thread and a few other places. Discussion topics were spread through a couple threads I'm afraid, so it's mostly in the foggy memories of us old timers (where facts become less and less sure) that the scope of some of the post game/ pre game talks come out. :clown:

Ya the gunpowder units in Americas are actually quite underwhelming in my opinion, it all comes down to mounted units, which wipe the floor with anything that isn't mounted.

I had an idea the other day when I was sitting around wishing I had a hotseat turn to play. It's not particularly original but what about a communal singleplayer co-op game where we play one turn each in no particular order? basically anyone can play the turn so long as they didn't play the turn before - just grab the save, post to say you have it, return it within 24 hours with a few basic notes for the rest of the players

Would anyone be interested in that? We could pick a mod that not many have played, maybe something really unusual, or an old favourite that hasn't been dusted off for a while.

I'd be into Broken Crescent 1.05 but BI was also mentioned and that could be fun too. Or an EB campaign?

I'd be up for that kind of game. It would be an interesting change and wouldn't demand too much from the participants with them playing single turns.

Maybe a 24 hour wait before the same player could take another turn after playing? Not letting anyone play two turns in a row might work as well, although it could be good to leave it as an option in case there's a period of time other oplayers are too busy.

Hey there Vasilefs and welcome! I mentioned you the other day to NB as one of the skilled players from the WWC game. You played very well there, I kept tabs on that game, and I'm very happy to welcome you to the .org!

Don't mind the heated discussion over at the TWC HS topic, you'll find no prejudice here :laugh4:

Actually we have a couple of games that need players.

Clash of Gods! (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?136281-SS-6-4-Clash-of-Gods!-OOC) needs a Kwarezmian player. It's a Catholics vs. Muslims lead battles hotseat, 4 players per team and the Crusader States are on the Muslim side. Victory is achieved by holding and converting target cities to your faith, and Jerusalem is required to win by both teams.

The K-Shah in that game has been a bit underdeveloped (or so I'm told by Silver Shield) because It switched players several times and some have been relatively new to hotseats. But with Jihads allowed, and their strong corner-map posiiton, and the final battle for Jerusalem that decides who wins still far into the future you can make a notable difference!

March of Time (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?138477-The-March-of-Time-A-Stainless-Steel-6-4-hotseat) - yet another SS 6.4 lead battles game, this time a free for all using the Long Campaing VCs for each faction. The Kwarezmian shah is available there and their position is very, very strong. Right now I'd say the most likely winner is either the Fatamid Caliphate (played by phonicsmonkey) or the K-Shah, simply judging on their positions on the map and starting armies.

We will most likely soon be starting another Kingdoms: Britannia forced AR game, since our current These Sceptred Isles (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?138971-Kingdoms-Britannia-Hotseat-These-Sceptred-Isles) seems to have reached a point close to a resolution. You can reserve a spot if you wish.

If you want to, do give a SS 6.4 RPG game a try, it's a very different experience from hotseats. Lords of the Danube (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/forumdisplay.php?378-Lords-of-the-Danube), ran by Nightbringer, has it's own subforum for the sake of convenience.

If you're feeling a bit more leisurely and singleplayer-y you can give our RTW: Europa Barbarorum 1.2 Romanii sucession game (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?140097-EB-1-2-Succession-Game-Resurgere-Romanii-Reipublicae-%28Rise-of-the-Roman-Republic%29) a try. It's basically a bunch of players playing the Romans in EB and we throw in the occasional in-character story and screenshots. Which I have to get to, but I've been lacking time as of late.

Hey! someone help Zim out with his question about Steam!

And on a different topic: time for some new hotseat games?

Suggestions:
- a new britannia game
- a new crusades game
- a 'diplomacy' game in the battleaxe mod (see the New Game Ideas thread)
- Glorious Achievements 2 (with a new set of rules)

What would be most interesting?

Nightbringer
03-01-2012, 01:40
I would probably go for Glorious Achievements 2. The battleaxe mod game sounds fun, but I am too lazy to start installing even more mods.
As for Britannia and Crusades, I would be up for them, but can't shake the feeling of imbalance and predictability in them. If we do them, I would want to go for a fixed alliance thing or something new like that to minimize these factors.

As for steam, I don't know, but I think there is (or at least one) a thread about it in the SS forum.

Myth
03-01-2012, 08:40
I think any established mod has been made to work on steam. I know there are separate Steam install instructions for Stainless Steel. I would still use the original games however.

I'm up for all of the suggested games but I think LS must end first before we start another Crusades game (though I don't think they are predictable. Especially if it's a LB game and the forts cost 2500 gold)

Maybe I'm just really slow, but I've always been frustrated with medieval ranged units because I couldn't get them to melee attack until they ran out of ammo, so the only way I could get them to attack close before that was to run them into the enemy. Turns out all you have to do is hold ALT :/

I'm both extreme happy to find this out and very depressed that it was so simple...

It sounds interesting but some of the changes may be detrimental to hotseat play. And we found (actually Byg found) that scripted commands and options don't work in hotseats during the BGR game. It was 60+ turns in when he realized some things weren't working. It will remain to be seen. I'll probably create another install just to test things out.

Hi guys, the Lords of the Danube RPG is really starting to get interesting!

The King has just apparently been assassinated by persons unknown right in the middle of a war with the ERE and the Cumans. Meanwhile to the west Venice is sitting in forts on our border.

It's all going to kick off in a big way in the next ten turns or so as we go to war on all fronts!

Problem is, we're a little short on players. There are three avatars which could be adopted by new players.

If you are interested in joining, post here, or PM Nightbringer, or post in the Lotd OOC thread in the sub-forum.

I've been talking to people about what games to start up. I think there is a need for a new game or two now. SilverShield got me an idea - starting a Broken Crescent 2.3 game, since the old versions are much better than the new one.

phonicsmonkey has fond memories f that mod, as does Zim and I think Thanatos as well. What do you guys think? Do we have a link to even get this mod?

Even better, I still have 1.05 and its patches saved on my HDD. I could host them on torrent for you guys if anyone is interested.

I have to say though, it's not a particularly balanced mod. With player skillz at the high level they are these days it may be a walkover for one or two factions....I won't say which ones! :laugh4:

Might be a better setting for an RPG? I'd love that...always wanted an RPG set in an Islamic faction

However i really think for the health of the TR we need to have some games in the new TW titles, to bring in new faces

Isn't it impossible to play the new games in hotseat though?

I do agree, but I'm just not sure it will be possible.

It is, hence RPGs and succession games.

Also encourage AARs of multiplayer campaigns like Mod vs Mod

About using newer games for hotseats. I gauge interest in a game by how many people are in each sub-forum as listed by the "views" on the main forum list. Right now 13 people are viewing all the Shogun 2 forums which is more than the 9 viewing all Empire/Napoleon sub-forums. But Rome has 21 and Medieval 2 has 23. It's the same (in general) over at the net with M2 hosted mods being seen by more people than all S2, Empire , and Napoleon forums combinded. The newer games have less interest in general plus less modable and limited (if any) multiplayer. Oh, and the single forum/sub-forum here with the most viewers? You're reading it.:2thumbsup: Yes, the Throne Room is number 1. Now if we can get those 26 people to play.

Hey everyone, I'm thinking of getting a new kingdoms hotseat campaign going as all the current ones have ended. I thought it might be interesting to try one with fixed alliances, to try to accommodate for some of the balance issues people have been noticing in kingdoms.

I'm posting this to gauge interest on which campaign people are most interested in.

So what do you all think? Britain? Teutonic? Crusades?

Domen,

I see you have been engaged int he discussion about the balance in these games. Would you like to try playing one over here in the Throne Room?

I have been super busy these past few days. I worked overtime - utnil 2 AM on Monday night and until 11 pm last night. From now on though I'll have a lot more time. I vote for the Crusades campaign as it's the one I am least familiar with, having played 4 games in Teutonic/Britannia (and won 3 of them). Furthermore the Crusades campaign has more factions and special abilites for the starting Fls which make it very interesting.

Just make sure that spies can't open anything to prevent the Spy Wars we h ave in MoT, and that one needs two units of Catapults to open a fort (since they cost 2500 a piece and are made of stone) and four catapults to open a stone city.

This makes early aggression possible (instead of waiting for trebs) but it's not that easy to get 4 catapults. One treb should still open anything, and ballistae should open nothing naturally.

I like team battles, though perhaps the Crusades campaign will be better off as a FFA? I also have a question, do the rest of you value a victory in a FFA game less if it's a team victory instead of a solo victory?

Personally no. Although if the alliance block was too large it might be a bit lame depending no the number of players left.

Myth

I'm talking 2 factions who claim allied victory instead of being forced to massacre each other for 20 turns after they've been fighting alongside one another and eliminated everyone else together.

Domen,

I see you have been engaged int he discussion about the balance in these games. Would you like to try playing one over here in the Throne Room?

I would play one but not at the moment, I'm quite busy too and I already have hmmm +/- 6 HS campaigns on another forum.

It's more than enough for me considering the amount of my free time so I don't take any new ones for the time being.

When I finish one, I can start one new. ~;)

I also have a question, do the rest of you value a victory in a FFA game less if it's a team victory instead of a solo victory?

No. And team victories are more frequent than solo victories. Maybe because players rather like to claim a team victory than continue the HS for 30 more turns, trying to destroy each others' powerful factions. Long "positional war" of 2 equally strong enemies is not so funny.

And also when someone is "selfish" and wants to achieve a solo win, other players tend to unite against such person.

Although if the alliance block was too large it might be a bit lame depending no the number of players left.

Yeah.

Imagine all factions uniting against TO in Teutonic campaign and then claiming victory and campaign end after destroying TO.

But that would be an extreme example.

Having had a bit of a hiatus from the Throne Room, I'd be rearing to get back into some hotseats. I'd be up for a Crusades and a Britannia one, if they were hosted.

Edit:

Are there any current TW RPGs going on? I know The King's RTW one is in a kind of limbo, but over the past 2-3 weeks I've been binging through the Throne Room archives and wouldn't mind playing in another one.

A team battle for crusades would be problematic at the beginning due to there being only 5 starting factions, but if you skipped the game ahead to when the Venetians arrived you might be able to work out a 2 or 3 team game. Although it's been forever since I've actually seen the Venetian invasion so I have no idea how their forces would compare to the other factions.

Well, the team battles discussions have been more about Britannia and Teutonics, so we could do a normal FFA crusades game and a team Britania one how about?

Going off of memory, they bring three separate armies, though I don't remember quite how big they were. They've got all types of units so they're handicapped in auto-resolve, but I seem to remember they come with catapults.

However, I'm not sure how to adjust the rules to account for Battleaxe's particular features, and was wondering if I could get some help from people more experienced.

1. Forts in Battleaxe are prohibitively expensive by design. That means lead battles aren't practical, right?
2. Catapult makers require a minor city or a fortress. But since everyone starts with castles, a catapult would only be useful under the normal rules if someone chose to convert to a large. How should the rules regarding opening walls be changed to account for this nerfing of artillery?

It depends on what the map is like. If there are a lot of trees about we could go LB and it would add some real tension as you'd have to hide each turn...

Not sure I follow...are you saying catapults aren't useful because no-one has the level of walls that require them?

What I'm worried about is that the game might be finished before anyone is realistically able to recruit catapults, not to mention trebuchets which require a higher level settlement.

Ah I see.

Well if it's an AR game you can either leave it as it is, in which case players would have to bring enough men to the fight an leave them in siege for a turn, or just make ballistae able to open everything.

Alternatively if you don't mind messing around with the starting position you could use console commands to give everyone a fortress and siege workshop from the beginning.

If it's a fought battles game you are pretty much forced to either change things at the start or use some rules which allow agents to open the gates.

Hi Elite Ferret, Cecil is indeed around, but he doesn't post much. He helped us with a delicate issue back during the summer. TATW 3.1 is great, I'm enjoying it a lot for SP. If we set up a hotseat it should not be more than a 2v2 though, since the distances are absurd relative t the movement points of the armies. As the Higih Elves last game I spend the entirety of the game moving two armies from the east coast of Middle Earth to the Gondorian front.

Something like Rohan/Gondor vs Mordor/Haard could be fun though.

Ferret
11-27-2012, 13:29
Yeah that's the impression I got from skimming through the thread. It's a shame but I guess having predetermined alliances and very defined battle areas isn't ideal for a hotseat. It does feel like a very slow mod to me, takes a while for anything major to happen.

Gondor/Rohan vs Mordor/Harad could indeed be fun, but I think I'd be very worried about the AI Isengard if I was Rohan.

Is anyone else interested? If not I guess I'll hang around for the next SS game.

Unfortunately it is a little tricky to set up RTW hot seat so we don't currently have any games with it, but our Kingdoms and Empires game just got started off, is using the base game, and has some other relatively new players in it as well. Feel free to head over tote in game thread and claim a faction that I can change to human controlled for you. You would be a couple turns behind but it shouldn't be too much of a problem if you pick Russia for example since they are pretty isolated at the start.

Also, Welcome to the throne Room Brother Sam!
