View Full Version : So why am I always fighting on the same battlemap?

Playing legendary level you tend to fight a lot of battles in the same province and I've noticed that I always seem to be fighting on one of a very few very small and very boring maps.

Are there any additional map packs or whatever for SP?

If I see that same battlemap in Owari with the hill in the NW corner that the enemy always camp on again I am going to scream....

I mostly fight around castles, and that same castle map that is running again and again is driving me mad. I haven't played much S2TW due to workload of RL, some 20h in all, I think, but besides having 3-4 battles in the open area, most of them have been castle sieges (me both defending and attacking). I can't believe the fact that every province that has a a coast has the same identical map to fight on. Working as intended?

You can skip ever trying STW then. Every province had only one map. Of course, back then most of us didn't mind that - in fact when I last played STW a year or two ago, it didn't bother me then. Some of the maps were like old friends with many fond memories of the great battles fought there.

In fact I started on STW and loved the battlemaps as they were huge, full of tall mountains and cliffs (remember Kaga and Shinano?) and no two battles were ever the same.

I also loved the RTW and M2TW maps where you could carefully position yourself on the terrain to start off at the top of some huge mountain pass (or if you were unlucky find yourself at the bottom and the enemy on the top).

But these are crappy little maps with a couple of hills and some trees that seem designed purely to not give anyone an unfair terrain advantage in MP.

In fact they even make me long for the NTW maps which at least seemed larger and had some interesting terrain features like walls and farms (the only ones I've seen on STW2 are on the castle maps and never feature in the action).

Are we really to imagine that Sengoku Jidai Japan's countryside was largely flat and uninhabited? Where the hell are all the little villages, the flooded rice paddies, the temples and shrines - above all the steeply forested hills and mountainsides that hardly anywhere in Japan is very far from.

In fact except for the castles there's nothing visually Japanese about the battlemaps at all - how can they have spent all that time getting the campaign map to look just right and none whatsoever on the battlemap?

And that I think is at the root of the TW franchise's problems - each game has been more focussed on MP and consequently has got blander and blander so as to offer 'balance'.

There were historically no less than 5 battles at Kawanakajima.

And as Gregoshi says, with one map per province I remember many battles being very similar. I had to defend or cross the same bridges many times.

Don't let the MP crowd hear that - they will laugh in your face on that one.

I hear you on the maps, though terrain-wise, S2TW doesn't seem as bad as RTW (I had to skip MTW2 and ETW/NTW due to my ancient PC). but you are right, there is little in the way of character in the maps - at least that I've fought on so far.

Shinano...I wonder how many sprites died fighting over that piece of real estate? :laugh4:

I think you've been fighting in the same area of your province...
For example I can think of 5 maps in a single province: castle, area near it, river, seaside, mountain side...

I will agree that the maps are a bit too similar. Unlike some of the other posters, I don't feel like I'm always fighting on the same map. (Except for siege battles. Seriously, they couldn't create more then 4 or 5 castle maps for the entire game?) However, all the maps are generic and they easily blend together. The only variations are just how much forest there is, how many hills there are, and where they are placed. If you're lucky, there will be an odd bit of impassable cliff or a farm house dropped somewhere for you to maneuver around. The maps 'work', but they totally lack character and every single one of them is forgettable.

probably for the same reason there was only 1 song in ETW or the same reason they stopped giving historical quotes in NTW during loading screens.
