I was thinking of getting into Warhammer figurie army stuff?

The factions I was thinking off are;

Goblins and Orcs

Undead

Realm of Chaos

The Empire

What ones are the best out of them?

I suppose you plan on starting a crack habit as well, yes?

WarHammer is gonna cost you, both in time and (especially) in dollars

I'm trying to do an intervention here

You don't have the time, cos you are still on this forum. Maybe give up on one? *hint* *hint*

MRD is a wise man.

Haven't played in years so I don't know the current lists. The economical choice is probably Chaos, more points per model means less cash spent and less time painting. If you have nothing but time on your hands, take goblins/orcs or skaven. Painting an army for either of those will keep you off the streets for months.

Fantasy eh? First thing I recomend: check your "Friendly local gaming store" to see how strong a Fantasy community you have there; nothing is more saddening to have no one to play with... and to waste a sizeable portion of money.
From a competive point of view Chaos & The Empire are your best candidates. I'd personally sway towards Empire as I'm an IG player.
I strongly recomend you purchase non-GW stuff when you can, this also breeds a sizeable amount of character into your army: My IG force uses a huge amount of Warlord Games Landwehr as typical platoon infantry.
For Empire these might be cool: http://store.warlordgames.co.uk/pike--shotte-319-c.asp (Warlord Games: Pike and Shotte)
I would heavily recomended looking at Perry miniatures as well! Note these companies tend to use real scale rather than heroic scale, so your guys may look a tad smaller. Warlord games stuff seems to be pretty close to heroic with its sculpting. This isn't that great a problem as most of the time you may be pitted against skinks Lizardmen, Demons and other Non-human fiends.

And as MRD said; yes this is a time consuming habbit, and a money consuming when your not watching carefully.

I can post a comic dump from "Inferno!" - featuring the Roskan War if people would like to see that.

It's a 40k one, but shows an excellent encouragement to go for non-gw models. The grenadiers guys can easily be recreated with these: Forgive me if I sound like someone viralling non-GW products. (http://store.warlordgames.co.uk/pre-order---austrian-napoleonic-infantry-1798-1809-6730-p.asp)

Yes, definitely make sure there are people around you who play frequently before you commit! Personally if you're on a budget I'd go with any of the Elves, Dwarf (I went with these baddies), Bretonnia, or as suggested above Chaos-- Don't have to sink a ton of time painting... gee, I haven't played since my early years in College, had to make the decision to either try to graduate or be a shut-in.
