View Full Version : Dark Age of the Vikings - A TLK hotseat (checking interest)
The mod: see here (http://www.twcenter.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=867).
It's a game set in the Dark Ages, with pre-christian Vikings raiding Anglo-Saxon England. The mod is in a 3.05 beta stage atm but I downloaded it, played it and I can say it's more refined than say, Broken Crescent. It's historically accurate, well thought out and combat is balanced - almost everyone has infantry with defense north of 25, which means that cav can't be abused in lead battles that much (charges aren't as effective and troops get tired in prolonged fights).
With DoW finished, I'm wondering do we have people interested in a hotseat? I'm busy atm but will get more free time by the end of the week.

The Last Kingdom? I'v been waiting for this mod to come out for years! It looks so awesome! If it's already out, then sign me up right away :)
There's a "beta" version 3.05 but honestly it looks better than most other "completed" mods. Check the Downloads page and install it, give it a try and then come back all excited (it's what I did) :D

I'm looking to get involved in another hotseat and this looks good. I have zero experience with M2TW though so I'm sure to be thrashed by the veterans. I guess I'd still love to give it a go though. :]

I'v been playing this mod all evening, and already I have fallen in love with it - it feels like so much effort has been put into it :)

I'v been playing this mod all evening, and already I have fallen in love with it - it feels like so much effort has been put into it :)I've played a few turns with different factions and I've noticed a problem. Most buildings do not do what they say they do-provide population growth, public order, and income. Some actually provide different results, i.e. growth instead of order or trade. Since most factions start out with limited recruitment ability you have to be able to grow towns to get the buildings that allow you to recruit. And that's not possible-low taxes only go so far. It's a beautiful mod but the game mechanics are broken. We should be starting our hotseat at twc tonight.

Damn I played until I conquered half of England and hadn't noticed this! I reported this, alongside some other issues I found in the bug reports thread.

Why not at The Org? :(
yEAH!
I wouldn't play at the TWC for convenience issues (rather just check here for games that my turn came up). Also, they never play fought battles, and this game won't work well in autoresolve if you want player controlled Wales and Ireland (Archers and javelins vs infantry with 37 defense in autocalc...).

You can overcome its economy problem (that large army) by capturing regions. i think this mod uses the vanilla BAI, not Xerxe's or Germanicus5's BAI. Very hard is the new easy. I claim East Frankish Empire if we start one here!! Half stack of Charlamagne's Longbowmen can wipe out a garrison.
East Franks are very powefrful early on, akin to the ERE in SS. However with the scripted 5000 or more bonus gold just for walking in a city, nevermind sacking it, anyone can make money. And ports and sea trade still rule the income. Even more so with extra buildings provided (albeit at a hefty 6000 price).
I'd probably go for Denmark and make your life hell if you are the EFE :D

I wouldn't mind going Normans or Wessex...
The Normans are very sucktastic right now - one 1/4 stack, no fleet and a very poor province. They can't hope to take the imbalanced rebels around them (see Paris for example) and the EFE can take them on with a third-rate stack.
Wessex however is one of the strongest factions based on starting position, unit roster and development of it's cities. It can become very rich very fast with all that sea trade, and it's 40 defense infantry can stomp most other things on the island.
Remmeber to:
Always ally with the Vikings faction as their scripted attacks will hurt like hell otherwise.
Build ports and +trade fleet buildings with priority, even if they cost a ton. Then build +tradeable resources buildings. Trade gives you tons of gold AND grows population (LooseCanon you can tell the guys over at TWC this. I've tested it)
Occupy your own culture and exterminate enemy cultures (this is valid for the viking factions mostly, you can build culture conversion churches)

How many players do you think you'll need for this one? I count four already interested
