A young dark-haired girl, perhaps six or seven years old, was at a brisk walk, bare feet pattering on the stone floor. Her navy blue night gown flowed behind her, and was nearly caught as she carelessly slammed an oak door behind her as she entered a bedroom. She took a running leap onto a bed laden with soft, velvet, pale blue blankets.. Waiting, sitting on a white, wooden rocking chair next to the bed was a wrinkly, elderly man, with silver hair that looked preposterously windswept.

“Story time, story time!” The young girl chanted to the old man as she sat herself upright in her bed. “C'mon, granpa, its story time!”

The grandfather's blue eyes twinkled and a smile adorned his face. “Of course, sweety. What sort of story would you like tonight?”

“I want something exciting!” she proclaimed. “Something new! I don't want another story about a princess in a tower!”

“Well, my dear....” he pondered aloud. “Something exciting... something new....” his grin slid further across his face. “Would you like to hear a story about me?” He asked her.

“Aww, but you can be kinda boring, granpa,” she pouted a bit.

“Oh, right, of course... I was being silly. You wouldn't want to hear it anyways. Might be too scary. Lots of angry spirits, and vengeful gods. Plus,” he looked at the sun nearly set outside a window on the far wall. “It would take you far past your bed time, and daddy wouldn't like that at all, would he?”

“Oooh, oooh, tell this story! Please, please, pleeaase!” The girl held up her hands in a pleading position and smiled at the grandfather with all the baby-toothed charm she could muster. He could only chuckle.

“Oh, well, I suppose, my dear.... if you insist. But this,” he leaned in with a wink, “will be our little secret. No telling daddy, alright?”

She nodded furiously, “You bet, granpa!” With a quick flutter, she nestled herself deep into the blankets before giving her grandfather a last nod.

“Alright, pumpkin. Long ago, the world was very different from today. People here on earth, when they were done here, were judged. If they were good, nice people, they went to be with the gods, in heaven. But, if they were mean, bitter people, they were punished, in the Netherworld, by demons. If they were punished, they would be sent back here, until they could show they could be nice to everyone. But the ruler of the Netherworld was selfish and greedy. He tried to make everyone go to the Netherworld. The Gods were angry about this, so they sent their own to get everyone back. But in the end, the ruler was overthrown by his own demons, one known as Hades.”

“But the Gods weren't done. When they tried to get the souls back, they took Hades' old realm between earth and the Netherworld. Hades wanted it back, of course, so he sent what he could to do just that. While the Gods and Demons were fighting, they awakened an ancient, powerful foe, Angra Mainyu. Mainyu had been in wait for thousands of years after being banished. He took the land between earth and the Netherworld. The Gods and Demons continued their battle anyways, thinking he wasn't important. Then, in a single day, Angra Mainyu unveiled his plan. In a single day, Gods and Demons alike turned on the Heavens and Netherworld and joined him, and he took the city of Babylon and all its empire, in just one day. He vowed to rule the Earth, the Netherworld, and the Heavens, all as one. Now, what remained of the Netherworld and Heavens had to finally put their battle aside and unite against their common enemy. So, they each sent a small group of their most valorous members to Babylon, to take Angra Mainyu out of power while the armies clashed. Nobody knew for sure what would happen, except that when it was finished, a whole new world would be born.”

“But what do you have to do with this, granpa?” She asked.

“That, my dear,” he answered with another wink. “Will be shown soon enough....”

Welcome to the Final Judgment, the last installation of the Netherworld series. Netherworld Mafia was the first large game I hosted here at the .org, and despite flaws, it remains something I'm proud of. It introduced a couple new concepts to Mafia here, and the players in the game ran with it with gusto. It was a fair bit later that I decided to continue the story started by the first game. Partially because it occupies a soft spot in my heart, but also because I simply have a love of the various concepts different peoples have considered for the afterlife. Simply, the stories of gods and goddesses, heroes and villains, have always enthralled me. Now, I feel like I want to give the story a proper send off. I'm honored that I can get the chance to do so during the Gameroom Anniversary celebration. If you want a bit of extra insight into how this game will be structured, the first two games of the series will give you a good idea.

One (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?100679-Netherworld-Mafia-Concluded) and Two (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?124738-Netherworld-II-Concluded)

In short, here's a description of how the game will run. The invading forces of the Netherworld and the gods will be the mafia, in this game. The forces of Angra Mainyu, in pursuit of planar unification, will be town. There will be one main mafia faction, consisting of four players. Their goal will be the extermination of all town forces and all neutral roles which may have conflicting victory conditions. There will be a number of pro-town roles, including at least one doctor, one watcher, a mason group, and a couple 'variety' roles to compliment the 'normal' townies. Lastly, as always, there will be a couple independent roles. These may have their own victory conditions, or may be able to tie themselves to a group(town or mafia). Generally speaking, I reserve the craziest of my ideas for neutrals, since they tend to start alone and have the hardest challenge for winning, so the independent roles might be a cult or a dragon or a shark with laser beams or anything else my brain has spawned. The main thing to expect is a fair bit of chaos and ambiguity. I rarely give yes/no or black/white answers to questions. Many roles which will have hidden abilities. If they do, you will never be told them by me, but with some homework, you may be able to guess on your own what they are. Some roles may gain or lose powers based on game events. If your role changes in this manner, I will inform you. Lastly, its a guilty pleasure of mine to confuse players, particularly pro-town networks. Make sure to take care of who you trust.

The game will begin with a night phase, after which, the town will vote to lynch in traditional mafia fashion.

Rules:

NO QUOTING PMS, NO QUOTING CHATLOGS, NO SCREENSHOTS, NO ALTERNATE ACCOUNTS, AND NO TRANSLATING PM'S-You may claim whatever you want, including role name, so long as you don't quote my PM's word for word, or very close to word for word.

The dead cannot reveal anything, including previous night actions, but they may participate as much as they want to contribute to general discussion. The dead also may not communicate outside the thread in any way, shape, or form relating to this game, be it via PM, chat, quicktopic, or other. Please, please follow the spirit of this rule and do not try and bend around it with technicality. I will not be pleased.

I do not allow Vote: No Lynch as an option. You may abstain, however.

If you wish to take back a vote, you CANNOT do it by editing a previous post. I will not count it. Period. You must unvote in the style of unvote: GeneralHankerchief in order to recant the previous vote. In order to vote for someone, you must do so in the usual Vote:issaikhaan style. Votes must be bolded, for reference.

WoKs(Wrath of Khaan) will occur if a person does not vote 3 rounds in a row, or if they do not vote in 4 rounds in total. Please, please don't make me WoK you. It won't be a pretty death.

Suicides will only be allowed in the event of a person being very much unable to participate in the game. I do not allow suicides for any other reason.

No links to anything outside of this thread. Period. I don't care if it pertains to something completely irrelevant.

It would be very helpful for the sake of my sanity if player's kept a tally running.

If you help keep tally, please double check accuracy.

Voting periods will be 24 hours, though I may occasionally extend it to 36 if necessary.

Any ties in voting will await someone to break it. First vote to either person who is tied will result in lynch, regardless of any posts after it.

Play within the spirit of the game, pun intended. That is, play to your objectives. Play in good faith, not to screw with the host or other players, but in a way that someone who would want to win would.

HAVE FUN!

I have designed this game in mind for forty players. I can tweak it for if we are a bit under or over, but I would very much like to hit forty. So, sign up, tell your friends, tell them to tell friends, stalk strangers, whatever.

"So what happened that night, granpa?" the young girl asked. The elderly man shook his head. "That night, pumpkin, started the test for everyone. For Heaven, for the Netherworld, for everyone supporting Angra Mainyu. Only the bravest were going to make it through. But that night, yes... that night..."

That night, following Mainyu's announcement, Visorslash sat himself down at the corner of a small shack. He, personally, was baffled by Mainyu. Why would he give his opponents the chance to strike first? It had to be a hoax, then. No real invading enemies. Question, then, would be why to sequester so many of his followers within walking distance of the palace? He turned his gaze up to the dark street. So eerily quiet, for such an immense city. There was not a sound from any human or god or demon. Just a.... what was that, anyways? A faint... tapping? Not quite the right word, but maybe close enough. He peered his head around the other corner, and it was there he saw quite a sight. Someone was riding atop a peacock, with a lance couched for a joust. Visorslash stood up slowly with an uncertain look to his face. The peacock was picking up speed. Visorslash immediately wheeled around to the other street and began a sprint. After a second or two, he looked back, to see the peacock sprinting around it with unnatural speed and agility. Visorslash poured every ounce of his adrenaline, picking up every bit of speed he could. One second later, he felt a cool sensation through his chest. He looked down, a second as though a lifetime, to see a lance head was piercing through. Before he knew it, the peacock gave an almighty kick, the lance had withdrawn, and Visorslash was face down in the dirt, the sparkling blue-green bird atop him. The rider gazed down, and ended Visorslash once and for all with a lance thrust to the head.

Atop a nearby roof, a woman shook her head. Her simple, tan robe fluttered slightly in the wind. “Truly, we were correct. Savages.” With that, she opened pearly wings, and jumped from her position. Wings spread, she dove down upon the peacock rider. At the last second, he heard the ruffle of wings, turning just in time to see his attacker before she was upon him. She turned herself feet first, landing atop the rider and sending him rolling, off his steed. He recomposed himself, only to see the woman sitting atop his own peacock! “It is only fitting,” she whispered. “You have taken so much from us... It is time to exact punishment.” The peacock rider gave a roar of rage, and rushed her with his lance. She stared him down, and as he thrust the lance at her, she seized it with her right hand, stopping it a few inches from her face. “Enough.... enough.” She twisted her right wrist, and snapped the lance head clean off. She jumped from the peacock, grabbing the remains of the lance with her right, holding the splintered lance head with the other. Wrenched her left and, and yanked the lance away completely, whirling the base around sweeping it under Tratorix' feet. Her foe decked, she immediately leaped down, pinning her left fore arm against his throat. She brought down the lance head with her right hand into his face, again and again. She did not relent until there was not a single recognizable feature to it. Then, lastly, she lifted her forearm up, and slowly sliced at the neck, taking pleasure in rendering it apart.....

Tincow sat meditating in his temporary abode. It wasn't as nice as his usual house in Babylon, but it wasn't a hovel, at least. And, it was at least away from the main road. Even with so many crammed in a relatively small area, he found some peace. A knock on the door interrupted it. He ignored it for a second, then sighed. Oh well. He was halfway to the door when the knock was made again. “I'm coming, I'm coming...” he said. He was squeezing the knob when a thump was heard on the other side, the door flying off hinges, sending TinCow to the floor. A woman walked through the frame, a satin dress hardly concealing a layer of bronze scale armor. She held a curved saber in her right hand.

“Making a lady wait like that, so rude! Where did you learn manners? Not that I suppose it matters much now, does it?” TinCow scrambled backwards in a panic, only to find himself up against the back wall. The woman jumped to his position, holding the saber to his throat. “You're finished... traitor.” With a clean slice, TinCow's head was severed.

God Emperor was wandering the streets. He didn't much like the idea of having to live in some new place. Either way, sleep was unlikely. Besides, it was a clear, warm night. So much nicer than it was in the daytime. He turned around the corner to a new street, and saw what seemed to be an enormous human male in the middle of the street. It seemed to have been walking down, holding in one hand an axe of astronomical proportions. The haft had to be eight feet long, the double-edged head perhaps four feet. The man's eyes lit up upon seeing God Emperor. With his off hand, the man pointed. “God or Demon, I care not. You have brought ruin to me and my people! NOW YOU DIE!” God Emperor scoffed a bit. This mortal thinks he can kill me? The man moved at God Emperor, running at an incredible pace, and wildly swung the axe. God Emperor instinctively ducked the blow, the axe going just over his head and plowing into the house next to him. The axe ripped apart the brick and mortar as though it were papyrus. God Emperor's eyes went wide. Perhaps it would be wisest to play this safe. He took off at a run as the man swung his axe downwards, missing again and creating a gash in the street. The man howled, and went round the corner of the house. God Emperor was already in the distance, and wheeled down a dark ally. The man roared in frustration, and smashed his axe once more into the street before stalking off.

"And so, they have struck," Angra Mainyu announced the next day in his throne room. You were all in a fairly small area, so naturally, one of you must have seen something. Whoever they are, hand me the treacherous agents! We shall give them a slow and painful demise. Drop by drop, agent by agent. They shall know the terror of my hand slowly closing around their throats. Now, at it! You must know! Give me an agent!"

Angra Mainyu stood from his throne. Having kept attention to the discussion, he was certain who was to be offered to him. "TheLastDays, come forward!" Mainyu boomed to crowd. TLD was shuffled to the front by a small group, and they pushed him to the ground in front of their lord. "Does anyone have any last comments for the condemned?" Mainyu asked.

"It's Arjos!" A voice yelled out. "I'm sure!"

"He's right!" another yelled out.

"Me too, I think its Arjos!"

"It's gotta be him!"

"Let TLD go, its Arjos!"

Mainyu was almost baffled when Arjos was pushed alongside TLD in front of him. Seemed support for both deaths was strong. Angra Mainyu stared into their eyes, to guage them himself. He pointed a finger out at TheLastDays. "Looks like.... fortune smiles on you today." With that, he picked up Arjos by the scruff of the neck, and windmill slammed him down in front of the throne. Mainyu pulled his sword from its sheath, and plunged it into the gut of Arjos. Mainyu motioned to a guard. "Please, remove this from my sight," indicating Arjos' limp form.

He turned back to the crowd gathered. "Good luck to you all tonight. Have fun, wherever you hide, scum..."

B_ray had gathered the others in the neighborhood together for the night. First, he thought they might be safer in greater numbers. Second, he was hoping to alleviate some nerves by playing some games together. Help keep their minds off of possible impending doom and whatnot. The group was setting up the board and pieces when a frantic knock came from the door. Had someone been late? Was someone in need of aid? B ray rushed to the door and opened it. A very pretty woman, in a crimson satin dress stood in the doorway, looking quite calm and unharmed. “Can I... can I help you?” he asked her.

“Oh yes. You see, I have a cart out here I was using to move some, er, figs. But I think the axle broke.” B ray gave a look back at the group, then stepped out past the doorway, instinctively closing the door behind him.

“Now, where is this car-” B ray never got to finish his query, as a saber whipped past his throat in a blur, sending him to the ground in a crumpled heap.

The sky was beautiful at sunset. As the sun finished its descent from the sapphire sky, the colors simply were splendid. Yaropolk was sitting atop his new accommodations, legs hanging down. It was one thing humans had on any god or demon. Even the Heavens lacked the sheer natural beauty the earth sometimes displayed. With the sun finishing its descent, and embarking from earth for the night, the sky darkened. With a sigh, Yaropolk picked himself up. He turned back to the stairs leading to the main level, only to startle upon seeing a woman dressed in a simple, tan, tunic, wings spread behind her.

“Yaropolk, so enthralled are you with this world, are you? Then perhaps... perhaps you should stay here. Forever.” She unsheathed a straight sword, rushing straight at him. Yaropolk bent backwards to avoid a slash from her terrible, swift sword. His precarious position at the edge of the house resulted in him tumbling backwards, falling down on his back in the street. Yaropolk began to get up, but the woman was already leaping down to him, sword drawn high, ready to deliver a finishing blow. Yaropolk closed his eyes and clenched, waiting for the blow.... Faint footsteps were heard, and a mighty clang rang out through the night. Yaropolk opened an eye, and saw another woman, in a white khiton and bronze helmet, standing before him, a round shield braced in front of her. The new woman delivered a kick to the aggressor's midsection, creating distance for the spear in her right hand. Without turning her head, she whispered to Yaropolk. “Flee, you fool. Be safe.” And so Yaropolk, without hesitation, fled down the street as fast as he could.

“No!” the aggressor shouted. She spread her wings, and took off from the ground. The shield bearing protector, however, grabbed her right leg, and brought her back to the ground. “He is not your fight. I am.” The aggressor shook her head. She immediately turned on Yaropolk's protector, kicked her wings out again, and flew away from the protector, away from the direction Yaropolk fled.

"As I knew it!" Angra Mainyu boasted in the throne room the next morn. "Only one casualty last night! We may just have them on the run! Now, go at it! Bring me a scum!"

"And so, everyone convinced of God Emperor's guilt, they sent him to kneel before their lord, several holding him down in a kneeling position," the elderly man continued. "God Emperor insisted down to the very end that he was an ordinary servant of their lord, but the mob refused to believe him, on account of his earlier escape at night. Mainyu, for his part, was actually a bit impressed with everyone for their decisiveness, and he took his sword from its sheath. With a quick stroke, he took off God Emperor's head. After that, he dismissed the group once more for the night."

"So, Granpa, did anyone know if he really was a bad man? Did he tell anything?"

"Oh, certainly not, pumpkin. Its not as though everyone has a grand speech where they explain their dastardly deeds before they die. No, no, everyone was pretty much completely in the dark for a long, long while....."

Yaropolk decided it was time to stop taking chances. No more night time strolls down the streets, no sir. After his narrow escape, he holed himself up in his accommodations. Even hearing a polite knock on the door, Yaropolk shook his head violently, and stayed in his corner. A second round of knocks came, a bit more forceful this time. Still, he stayed put. Maybe twenty seconds later, a faint light shone through the bottom of the door. The door shifted colors, from dark brown to a pale yellow. A similarly colored mist began seeping into the room, blocking the door frame from view. Yaropolk heard footsteps. A oddly foreign man stepped into the room, dressed in a glittering, dark green robe, with a dark moustache and beard hanging from his chin. He looked quite calm, and did not seem armed. He held a hand out to Yaropolk. Yaropolk reached up for it. A longsword materialized in the man's hand, and he whipped it around on Yaropolk's outstretched arm. To his credit, Yaropolk managed to recoil quickly enough to only be nicked. The man in green brought the sword down with his right hand. Yaropolk just managed to roll out of the way, and began to break for the mist. He made a lunge for where he assumed the door would be. In midair, he saw, as though time slowed down, the man in green effortlessly made the turn and brought the sword down straight into his path. He closed his eyes, cringing for the coming blow....

It was not the blow he expected. He fell to the ground awkwardly, where the door used to be. He scrambled up, to witness that his heroine had once more intercepted a blow. Her spear had glanced against the man in green's sword, deflecting its path. She now stood just inside the door frame, separating the attacker from victim. She lowered her stance, keeping her shield held across in a defensive stance. The attacker's pleasant face hardened visibly. He held his left hand to the sword's hilt. As the two fighters stared each other down, Yaropolk made a break for it down the street. The man in green sighed. He closed his eyes, and with a faint pop, he vanished.

Zack scratched his head. He wasn't really sure how he'd ended up out here. He found himself out near the crimson barrier, west of the palace. He shrugged. There had to be some place to settle for the night. He turned around, back to the dark street. In the distance, he could make out a figure walking his direction. It looked like... a human. A comically humongous human, wielding an equally comic axe, which may have been four times the size of a normal war axe. For a human, he seemed to make his way down the street with such a monster well. He picked up at a sprint towards Zack, who raised an eyebrow in alarm. Zack jumped back as the axe came down in front of him. The head crunched into the street. Zack was already on a sprint past the man. The man wheeled about, giving chase. Zack took a hard right into an alley, just avoiding a second chance at being cleaved. The man gave chase down the alley, but the it twisted like a gnarled branch in several directions, with Zack nowhere to be seen.

A very relaxed Reenk Roink was sitting in the middle of the one room shack he'd been assigned. If the time was come, the time was come, was his rational. He had not even locked his door. In the meanwhile, he figured, he would enjoy a drink or two. The knob to his door twisted, and Reenk did not look perturbed when a woman in bronze scale covered with a purple, satin dress entered through the frame, a saber in her right hand.

“Hello, m'lady,” Reenk said. He held up his cup. “Would you like a drink?”

“I think not, peasant. All I want tonight is your head.”

“Aww. That's a shame. Please, I insist.” Reenk reached over, and yanked on a rope laying to his right. The woman looked surprised for a second, following the path of tension of the rope mentally. Tugged rope leading to pully at base of the door on her left, going straight up to another pully at the top side of the frame, leading to another pully halfway across the frame, leading to a bucket which tipped over. And so came a downpour of drink, similar to that which Reenk held in his hand, drenching the woman.

“AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR!!!!!” She howled in rage, while Reenk howled in laughter, and in an instant, she held her saber across his neck, and separated his head from the rest of him without hesitation. She stormed from the house in a rage, grasping the dress with clenched fingers.

A woman stood at the door to a dark house. She knocked softly. The door was cracked open, and the inhabitant peered out. The person's eyes widen at the scantily clad figure before them.

“Please, my lovely... will you let me in?” The door opened a bit more, and the inhabitant ushered her in. Her way clear, she aggressively walked up to her host. “My lovely,” she whispered, stretching a finger across their chest. “Offer me support, and I will reward you beyond your imagination. Gifts of lapis lazul, a golden chariot, steeds the envy of the world. She turned her head slightly, showing off her lengthy, raven hair. “Well, my dear?” An eager nod greeted her question, and she allowed herself to be led further into the house for the night....

IT IS NOW DAY PHASE.

"And so," the elderly man continued onward. "Angra Mainyu's followers convened again. Even though only one had been vanquished the last night, the reports of other attacks still had everyone nervous. Except for Mainyu, of course. He sat on his golden throne, looking somewhat amused the whole time."

"Why was he so happy, granpa?" the little girl asked. "Didn't being attacked make him scared?"

The old man chuckled. "That's not how he worked, darling. He was always so confident, so sure he would succeed. It also could have been the antics of The Fluffy one."

The girl giggled. "The Fluffy One? Did he have a kitty?"

"Oh no. Nobody was quite sure what The Fluffy One really was. He might've been human, or god, or a demon. But what he really was, was a jester. He enjoyed poking fun at people and trying to rouse laughter from the crowd. But by this point, people were tired of his antics, and so, at the end of the day, they gave him over to Mainyu. While he was knelt before Mainyu, who took his sword out, he stayed true to form. 'Be careful with that sword, I wouldn't want to lose my fluffiness!' he joked to his executioner. Now, mainyu was not much for true humor, most of the time. But, it seemed, in honor of the jester being sent to his doom, he relaxed a bit."

"Did he let him go?" the girl asked.

"Oh, no. Mainyu was still his unmerciful self. But when he raised his sword, he gave The Fluffy One his final words. 'It seems, Fluffy, that this close shave is not one you'll soon forget.' Nobody heard TheFluffyOne's execution over the groans coming from the crowd."

Ironside slumped slumped up to the door of his residence. The day had seemed so long compared to the rest. Perhaps it was the sheer amount of idle chatter that made it stretch so long. Regardless, he inserted his key into the door, and twisted. The key stuck in place. He jangled it more, but to no avail.

“Having trouble?” Ironside whipped around. A bearded man, in a strange green robe was only a foot behind him.

“How? What?” Ironside stuttered out. He hadn't heard anyone approaching.

“Your door won't open, will it?” Ironside shook his head. The man nodded in response. “Good, it seems everything's in order. In a flash, he delivered a punch to Ironside's gut. Ironside felt a sharp, scraping agony in his midsection. Grasping down, he felt a blade in the man's hand. Equally quick, the man pulled back, and brought the blade down on a hunched-over Ironside.

GeneralHankerchief was sitting on his roof for the night, enjoying the cool night air. A rest was in good order. He let his legs hang out over the edge of the roof and swing free. He closed his eyes, breathing deeply. Without warning, he felt his stomach lurch, and an iron grip on his right ankle. He tumbled down as someone yanked him down from his perch. He hit the ground with a solid thud, on his back. A dark haired woman in bronze scale towered above him, and plunged a sword downwards. GH wrenched his chest to the right, and the sword just nicked his left forearm. The woman raised the blade once more.

“AAAAAAARG!” she screamed as an arrow pierced her right hand, forcing the sword to drop. With his opportunity, GH scampered up to see his savior. A human man stood down the alley, a long wild mane reaching down his back He pulled an axe from his belt as he approached the woman.

“Run!” he screamed at GH. “I will take care of her!”

With a snarl, the woman ripped the arrow from her hand, and picked up her sword. The two charged each other, weapons raised. The man raised his axe for an overhand swing, while the woman sliced her curved weapon upwards. The two weapons grazed each other on the way past, sparks flying. The man lurched forward with his left shoulder, throwing his fist out. The woman slid to her left, twirling, bringing her blade down on the man's ankle. With a cry of agony, his right leg gave way. Without warning or hesitation, the woman leveled her sword at Andres' neck, and sliced his head off with one clean strike. The woman straightened up, scanning for any sight of GH, but he was long gone....

"Granpa, when do I get to find out how you're in the story?" the young girl asked. "You keep mentioning all these people, but what were you doing?" The old man set his hand on her head and gave her hair a gentle tussle.

"Oh, now, that's going to be the big finale, my dear! I can't tell you now, it would ruin the ending. I need to build it up to the big final! I promise, you'll know soon. Now, back to the story. That next morning, everyone gathered back, only to find out that two people were missing from last night. It caused a stir from most of the crowd, but they went silent when Angra Mainyu stood up from his throne and held his hands high. 'Fear not!' he proclaimed to the crowd. 'It is only by struggle that we can separate the strong from the weak. We may have been set back, but it will only make us that much stronger!'"

"Now, with that bit of inspiration, the crowd began a heated discussion once again, and at the end of the day, it seemed they were conflicted over two candidates to give to their lord. One, called Glyphz, seemed sad and accepting of his fate- he even offered himself to the crowd! But others in the crowd wanted to hand over the one who was simply known as 'The Pizza Man.'"

The girl scrunched her face with a frown. "What's a pizza, granpa?"

"To be truthful, nobody knows exactly, pumpkin. People began to suspect it was code for Heaven or Netherworld, or 'hates Angra Mainyu'. In the end, at the last second, a surge of support for Glpyphz resulted in The Pizzaman being handed over. He knelt before the lord, and the crowd grew silent as Mainyu touched his sword to The Pizzaman's left shoulder.

'Before we are finished,' Mainyu began. 'We must ask you, Pizzaman, the great question of your existence. What. Is. A. Pizza.'

The Pizzaman merely looked up at the lord, with sad eyes, and proclaimed to the crowd. 'It is that which I value above all else. It is not a sword to be used for combat, or a shield to be used to protect. It is not even a way of life. It is both the darkness and the light. It is both the evil and the just. It is the essential truth of human nature- that we are all one. We share our strength and suffering, our righteousness and wickedness, our temperance and gluttony, our life and death. That, sir, is Pizza.'

Angra Mainyu held his left arm aloft, palm raised. 'I salute you. May you you find peace.' And with that, he raised his sword high, and finished his duty.

He turned back to the crowd. 'But we are not yet finished, my subjects. There are still agents amongst us. May strength bind your spirits.' And with that, he dismissed the crowd for the night."

In an unmarked house, off the main road, a shadow figure knelt. A limp body lay before it on the ground, illuminated only by a single candle.

“My dearest friend... my companion... why? Why you? The world did not deserve such a noble one as yourself. But they will know your death, they will know the injustice of it. They shall weep for you as I do. This, I guarantee. For they will know my sorrow, my agony, my fury! I will create for you a monument on the greatest hill in Babylon, and all will bow before it and lament for their loss! But those who do not lament for you, those who struck you down, they will know my wrath! They shall know anger hotter than the sun, fury unquenchable even by the Euphrates itself!”

And so the shadowy figure, trembling, picked up the body and laid it on the bed. In the darkness, a red aura seemed to seep from the figure, as it turned to the door, to depart for the night.

Romanic was perched on his house, crouched. The wise man, he figured, kept a vigilant watch in times like this. In particular, the avenues for attack- the street. Fortunately, the night seemed calm. There was hardly even a breeze, let alone others. It was almost eery how quiet it was. A rattling sound behind him caused Romanic to jump. The latch to the roof.... It sprung open, and a woman climbed out so gracefully it almost seemed that she levitated. He stood before a transfixed Romanic, flicking a spot of dirt off her scale armor.

“Your commode is filthy,” she informed him with a slight scowl to her face.

“What... but.... how?” Romanic stammered out.

“No concern of yours, lad,” she retorted. In a blink, she was behind him, with a curved blade to his threat. “This is a concern of yours.” With a flick of her wrist, Romanic collapsed before her.

Door locked? Check. Boarded up? Check. Sutras? Check. Furniture barricaded up against the door? Check. Double A was quite sure he'd done everything possible. Nobody, and he meant nobody, was coming in before the sun rose. Nevertheless, he still sat himself in the corner of the one room shack, his gaze not leaving the door.

Thump

Double A's eyes went wide.

Thump

He sat frozen. He waited. Waited. Seemingly an eternity had gone by. Minutes seemed like years, but the thumping had stopped.

Boom!

The front door exploded in a shower of splinters. Double A winced as shards of wood flew around him and into him. Into the now shredded frame was a wild looking man, an axe in his right hand several times the size of a normal battle axe. Without hesitation, he sprinted to Double A, bellowing like a bear. Double A attempted to scramble to his left. The attacker swung his mighty axe with his right hand, and impacted Double A straight in the chest. With that single attack, Double A was sundered in two. Giving one more bellow, the attacker brought the axe down in an overhead swing on the lifeless upper half of Double A and split the head in two. Heaving, the attacker slung the axe over its back, and stalked from from the shack.

Meanwhile, in a grand house, long abandoned, a young woman in a flowing white robe drifted about the archway into home. She seemed to be almost weightless as she floated about, sprinkling about a strange powder on the ground. She wandered further into the house for a moment and held her hand aloft. A body, which had been laying on a stone bench, levitated up, and followed her back to the archway. It settled itself down on its back in the archway with an unnatural grace.

The woman crouched down and whispered to it. “Your time is not yet done. The gatekeeper has not accepted your toll. Your story has not been written.” She stood up. She held both hands high. A faint, white light began to shine from them. She touched the sides of the arch, and the stone itself began to glow. The space of the archway began to shine, growing brighter, brighter, until it peaked into a blinding light.

Andres coughed. What... where? He was on his back, covered with pink petals. He twisted his head around. Nobody was here.... He shook his head. He started to get up, but a stiff back quickly sat him back down. “Well... I guess I'll wait for the the morning....” he thought to himself.

"So, the next day, when Mainyu gathered his forces once ag-" A knocking sound from the door quieted the elderly man. He raised an eyebrow, then a pointer finger to his lips. "Hush. I'll be right back." The girl immediately buried herself in blankets and closed her eyes. With a limp, the old man got up from his chair and stumped over to the door and cracked it open.

"Dad, is she in bed yet?" a deep, calm voice queried. "It's well past her bed time."

"I was just finishing up a story. She might be asleep already, but just let me finish up."

"Alright. Keep it short. We've got a surprise waiting for you down in the dining room."

The old man raised an eyebrow again. "Alright, I'll finish up and come down. Just gimme a few minutes." With that, he closed the door once more. He stumped back over to the rocking chair and sat down. He could see the young girl peeking an eye open. "It's all clear," he told her. She immediately jumped back up into a sitting position, with her back resting on the wall. "Now," he said, clapping his hands together. "Back to the story.

"Angra Mainyu gathered his supporters once more. At first, it seemed everyone was at a loss for what to do. Accusations starting to flurry about, and nobody seemed to be the one obvious candidate. But about halfway through, an accusation came against White eyes, that he had been observed stalking the city at night. When he didn't even speak in his own defense, and instead stuck his head up and ignored it, others became mad at him. So, when Mainyu declared that time was up, there was a clear consensus. He was dragged up to the throne. Angra Mainyu didn't even bother to stand up from his throne. Instead, he held out his left hand. A servant, bowing before him, lay a sword in it.

White eyes, knelt before him, did not even look up at his executioner. Mainyu scowled at the obstinate one before him. He decided if the executed would not even honor him with a last word, he would return the disfavor. So, from a sitting position, he swung his left hand in a short arc, and white eyes fell before him.

'Go, my followers! Find more evidence! I favor the proactive! Create pressure! We shall squeeze them out once and for all!'

Apologies, net access became a bit problematic.

Secura stood atop the tall, communal building, arms held out, taking in what was becoming a cloudy, murky, but cool night. Breathing deep, she could suddenly feel a break in the chill. An unexplained warmth swept over. She cautiously turned. She could hear a crunching sound from the other side. A hand clasped the top of the building, and a flash of fire announced the presence of her guest, who vaulted atop the building in one motion. He was a tall, dark figure, underneath an aura of brilliant orange and blue flames. Secura panicked just a bit, head on a swivel for an escape. Her guest unsheathed a long, wickedly curved blade, darker than blackest night. As he began his slow, stalking approach, the latch to the roof opened, and a woman bounded up in a flash just feet in front of him. Her bronze helmet and shield glinted for a second as a hint of moonlight peaked through the clouds. "So, you've finally shown yourself," she said. "Things must be desperate."

Beneath the aura, a small scowl adorned the intruder's face. The woman turned her head slightly, and whispered to Secura, "Jump. The fall will not hurt. This fight will be ugly." As she turned her head back, the intruder was already on her, weapon sweeping across. She raised her shield. The blade carved straight into it, tearing through like it was dry mud. It sliced into her left arm, but she withstood the agony to deliver her spear into his gut. He gave a mighty roar of agony, but did not pause, slicing his sword downward through the spear, cutting it in half. The woman gave a front kick to give herself distance. An unnatural black fluid issued from her wound. Her vision was going blurry.

Earthling stumbled backwards. The intruder raised a hand, grinning through the pain. A great vortex of fire shot fom his palm and engulfed Earthling for good.

"So the story's almost done, granpa?" the girl asked, eyes drooping a bit. "I'm still not tired!"

"Oh, pumpkin, that was just to get daddy off my back," he cautioned, hands raised from his lap. "Of course, I can't tell you when its almost over. That would make the ending boring, wouldn't it?" The girl nodded her head fervently before crouching down into her blankets once more, holding them just over her nose.

"Coming back to Angra Mainyu's great palace, his followers once more claimed certainty in finding one of the secret agents of the Heavens and Netherworld. Once more, a great accusation was leveled by Secura, who was reputed to have narrowly survived an attack the night before. This time, it was pointed at Renata. Renata herself said she witnessed Glyphz stalking the night in an unsavory manner as well. It was tightly contested at first, with both wondering whether it was Glyphz or Renata who presented the true threat. But in the end, a late of surge of support for Secura urged people onwards to voting for Renata. When the sun began to set on the horizon, the bell ringer gave a mighty clang to indicate the time was come for a decision to be made.

'Step forward, Renata and Glyphz,' Mainyu called, standing in front of his golden throne. 'Support for the death of Glyphz?' A relatively small handful of supporters stepped forward. 'Support for the death of Renata?' A much larger group of supporters stepped forward, defiant glares aimed at Renata. 'And so it is. Renata, step forward. Renata aimed a glance at the group, a small raised eyebrow all that indicated displeasure, before advancing before Mainyu. 'Last words?' Renata merely shot a sideways glance once more at the anxious group who had put her forth.

'Fools...'

Mainyu looked displeased at the address, and did not wait for his sword bearer. He raised his hands high, a caustic red lightning filling the air between them. He crashed it down on Renata. On impact, the lightning struck all the way through her, and she disappeared into a fine, crimson mist.

'And on a similar note...' he said, turning back to the crowd. 'Bring me SoulBlade.' He was shuffled forward by a pack of nervous onlookers. 'The glorious future has no place for the idle. You've done not nearly enough to stake your place in my new world.' And so, Mainyu brought down his wrath on SoulBlade, who was likewise vaporized on the spot.

Turning back to his supporters, Mainyu issued them a last farewell for the night. 'Well, fortune on your hunting tonight, my soldiers! I am confident the noose is tightening still!'

Believer was strolling just outside the great palace, whistling while leisurely tossing an apple in the air at intervals. Believer stopped as the street took a split- one path going left, continuing around the palace, the other snaking off into the city proper. Still whistling, Believer decided on a more direct route, following the palace. But as Believer turned, a flash of light made her pause. Believer paused her whistling, and craned her head back to the other street path. A fiery outline could be seen growing larger, coming closer, down the ally. A small grin overtook Believer's face. A dark figure could be seen underneath the brilliant aura, and the fellow stopped about ten feet short of Believer.

"He he he he... So, what drug you out here?" he asked. "Vengeance, or boredom?"

"A bit of both, naturally," Believer admitted. "It has been quite a trip, I have to say. These fools gathered here have made excellent game," she said, jerking her thumb back at the palace. "Apple?" Believer offered.

The dark figure grinned. "I'll pass. You really should come up with a new trick. No, I think I've spent enough time in idle chatter. Time," he said, drawing a curved blade, dark as night, "To do what I came for." Without another word, he leaped forward. Believer ducked down underneath a sword strike, and rolled to the right. The attacker spun around to his right and brought down a vertical strike which nicked Believer's left leg. Immediately, a corrosive black substance seeped out. Believer got up to flee, but her left leg collapsed, numb, leaving Believer to fall over face first.

"No more," he said, looming over a scrambling Believer. "No more of your games. No more of your treacherous, chaotic behavior. Any last words?" he asked, allowing himself a small grin. Believer got herself up in a sitting position, and spat at his feet. His grin not abating, he swung his sword, left-to-right, slicing deep into Believer's chest. The corrosive black fluid immediately filled the wound and leeched the surrounding torso. "Enjoy your final moments. Revel in the end you know had to come..... fool."

"Things were awful quiet," the grandfather continued. "The small number who disappeared each night got smaller and smaller, and some of those in the crowd started getting, well, a bit lazy. When the bell ringer issued the order to end the phase, Mainyu looked displeased at the group before him. 'What, do we think we have staked victory already?! Cut the slack, or I will destroy you all! I need the strong, the motivated, in my glorious kingdom! Not the fickle and lackadaisical!'"

The girl's eyes widened just a bit. "Did he punish them again, granpa?"

"No, he decided to be patient for just a bit longer, since it seemed they had made some progress. For as long as Mainyu waited to hatch his plan, he had plenty of patience. But he was not lenient.

Anyways, as it was, those that did participate in the arrest ended up settling on Seon as their choice, though by a narrow margin. Seon, for his part, was in the silent camp. As he was dragged up before their lord, he did not cry or protest. Having been given the silent treatment by the arrested, Mainyu returned the favor. He gripped his sword, and wordlessly ended Seon in one quick stroke. Mainyu gave a glare at the crowd, indicating without words his desire for them to leave. And so, they shuffled into the night.

A wall of dark, crimson light stood before Secura, who had wondered her way to the edge of Angra Mainyu's barrier. She raised her right hand to it lightly. The barrier hissed, and she pulled her hand back with a jolt. "Are we to stay here forever?" She wondered. "Will he keep this even if it means his own destruction?"

"I suppose I'll find out," a smooth, deep voice answered her from behind. She whirled around. A shadowy soldier stood before her, hand on a sword hilt. "But you shall not." He took his hand from hilt, raised them both straight out, palms facing forward. A stream of fire shot from both. The respective streams snaked around Secura, writhing, expanding. She made a move to flee, but a stream jolted itself in her way. "Now, my dear, your time is at an end." He clapped his hands together, and the two bolts exploded in a brilliant flash, their proximity all but incinerating Secura completely.

Due to the fact that I'll be moving over the next day, this phase will be a touch longer than normal.

The young girl yawned, and stretched her arms. "Oh come now, pumpkin, you won't fall asleep before the end, will you?" She snapped back up.

"I can stay up, Granpa!"

"Ah, good. Anyways, when they came back, the emergence of a cult was proclaimed by the revived Andres. But people were suspicious because he'd had many accusations already against him and they weren't sure if he was just trying to save himself. A valiant defense nearly convinced a change of heart, but in the end, Andres was set forth before Angra Mainyu. He stood before the steps leading to the grand throne. A pair of guards assembled to set him into a kneeling position, but he resisted. Finally, he dipped his shoulder, grabbing one guard's arm and flinging him into the next.

'Andres, you will kneel before your King and executioner.'

"You are not the King of this world,' Andres spat. You are a False King as well as a False God.' Enraged by his defiance, Mainyu glowed an even deeper crimson, lightning sparking in random directions. He raised his right hand, and fired a beam of red light at Andres. It hit him straight in his chest, and fired straight through. Andres immediately collapsed to the ground in a smoking heap.

'Well done, my subjects. The defiant shall learn their place, or suffer as he did. Now, back to your work. I am sure there are more still.'

Sheltered in his house, Yaropolk felt a sense of calm at last. He'd not been attacked in quite a while, it seemed. He'd barred the doors for the night, as usual. He sat in the corner cross-legged, and rested with his back to the wall. He closed his eyes. A thunderous cracking sound shot his eyes wide open. The door had been splintered in half, from top right to the bottom left. Yaropolk panicked for a second, scanning about, but realizing the only exit lay before him, filled by a large human wielding an enormous axe. "You have no place in my world," the man claimed. "I will rid it of all the foul creatures which have infested it."

He quickly rushed forward and swung his mighty axe in a left-swinging arc. Yaropolk managed to slide under it, and attempted to maneuver around his attacker. But the man turned on a heel and swung his axe down, catching Yaropolk's ankle and smashing it to splinters. Yaropolk planted to the ground in agony, screaming in pain. The man looked down at the doomed victim, and held his axe high for a final blow.

But he shifted his eyes away, and rolled to the left as a stream of fire entered in through the vacant doorway. A roaring flame caught the back wall of the residence, and erupted in a magnificent blaze. The man immediately hurtled himself at the front wall, and tore a hole through it with his axe and tumbled out. He gathered himself up to see a tall, ominous individual cloaked in an aura of fire glancing almost lazily over in his direction. They stared at each other for a few seconds, to the sound of the inferno steadily encroaching on the rest of the house. As the house collapsed under a weak frame, the man roared with fury that shook the remaining frame. He charged the dark attacker, axe held aloft. The attack was met with its opponents blade, drawn so fast the man couldn't see it done. The blade sliced straight through the haft of the axe, letting the head fall lamely to the ground. The man staggered back in shock.

"How? This... this isn't possible! You cannot defeat me! This land is mine, not the realm of godly spirits or demonic agents! Men shall know their own realm, and rule it by their own providence!"

"Hah," the dark attacker scoffed. "Can't you see the truth, even when it's right before your eyes? Men let themselves fall to a usurper. You deserve whatever fate befalls you. You can't defeat me. You can't even hurt me." As he finished his sentence, he immediately launched himself at the man, who was too slow to react and found the dark attacker behind him, one hand holding his left arm, the other with a black blade held to his throat. The heat from the aura was intense, but the man cared not. "Now, bow," the dark attacker commanded. The man scowled and held his ground. "I said, bow!" he commanded again, this time delivering a kick the back of the man's knee, causing his legs to buckle. "Now, no worries," he said with a small wink. "I'll see you soon." With that, he jerked his wrist and severed GeneralHankerchief's head cleanly.

"Now, the next day, when they found two had been slain, there was a great murmur amongst the crowd that their progress had been nothing but an illusion. That, just like this," the old man said with a snap of his fingers, "they would find out they'd been had the whole time. But still, they moved onwards, with a rally by their leader. It didn't take very long before they threw their suspicion at Zack, for having not succumbed to an attack much earlier. Despite his pleas, very near a majority grabbed him and tossed at the steps before their lord. Two guards held blades to his neck as he was forced down before Angra Mainyu.

Mainyu stood from his throne, and waited for a second before speaking. "I believe you're missing another as well. He leveled a pointed finger at Khazaar, who began to panic. Several of the entourage grabbed him and forced him next to Zack. One for cowardice and laziness, the other for treachery,' Mainyu declared. 'Both sins against the great, one future! So we shall prune the unfit from our ranks, so that the mighty and glorious may create a better future!'

And so, he held out his hands, an intense red energy bouncing back and forth between them. They burst in a flash, and both the condemned vanished, leaving only a black scorch mark where they were. With his task completed, Mainyu sent the remaining followers back. As they left, some began to wonder just how many needed to be pruned before this glorious future would be at hand..."

With four down in the last two, Death is Yonder nervously scuttled around the alleys of Babylon. Shelter was proving no haven. So here he found himself between two different, mud-brick buildings, about three feet apart. The full moon hung overhead, at the head of a glittering, cloudless night. He paused for a moment. This seemed a decent enough hiding place. No artificial light illuminated his position. He sat himself down, and rested his back against the cool wall. He let his eyes shut, and slowly exhaustion overtook him.

"Do you really think the darkness cloaks you from me?" A deep voice stirred DiY's dream. "It is my succor, my sanctuary. You cannot hide yourself." With a groan, DiY stirred his head. He startled awake as he was lifted up violently and pinned against the wall. He couldn't see what exactly was assaulting him- only a fiery aura which surrounded it. "For this affront to my power, I will give you a slow, excruciating end." The strange being rammed a nail into DiY's left collar, straight into and through the wall behind him. A second one followed in succession, in his right collar. The attacker relaxed his grip, and let DiY struggle in agony against his own mass. "Now, to make sure that you don't see the sun..." DiY heard the sound of a sword being unsheathed. But it was only the agony in his chest that alerted him to the sword's use. He could feel an unbearable agony eating his chest, consuming outwards like a parasite. Only when Death is Yonder finally passed out from the pain did his attacker finally consent to depart.

"Come sunset, the forces of Mainyu had finished their gathering. Two were put forth to their lord- Diamondeye, and Chaotix. It was a very close call, but as Mainyu counted the support for both of them, it seemed that Diamondeye was to be condemned by a very narrow margin. As he lay before Mainyu, he heard a scruffle behind him. Not daring to look behind, he waited until a second was slammed to the marble floor next to him. Shooting a glance sideways, he saw Autolycus face down next to him, with a terrified visage.

Diamdondeye lay passive, listening to Mainyu boast once more about weeding out the weak and unfit, about his own declared treachery. He heard the metallic sound of a sword being unsheathed. He closed his eyes. He heard a quick slice, followed by a thump as Autolycus was felled and tossed aside. He offered a short prayer to any higher power that might exist, that perhaps this whole thing was just a bad joke, that there really was one watching over everything, even the gods themselves. His prayer was cut short by the swift blade of Angra Mainyu, who quickly had the body tossed aside like that of the silent Autolycus. And so, once more, Mainyu dismissed his followers, giving them another lecture over weeding the weak and cowardly from their midst, especially those still siding with the heavens and netherworld.

Choxorn slowly trudged out of the throne room, lagging behind the rest. He had a strong feeling they hadn't made any progress in seemingly forever on extirpating the threat. Or perhaps this whole thing was a test by Mainyu. Either way, as he made his way to the street, he glanced longingly at the crimson barrier far in the distance. With a sigh, he sat himself down right in the middle of the cross section, watching the last remnants of Mainyu's supporters mill about into distant streets. "Why not?" he thought to himself. And so, he laid down in the middle of the street, right in front of the massive doors to the throne room.

"You're not all that clever, you know," a deep voice called to him in his dreams. "Now, get up! Look into my face." With a groan, Choxorn awoke, before scrambling backwards and hitting the door behind him in panic. A flaming aura stood before him, surrounding a tall, dark figure. "Did you think hiding in plain site works? Well, I must say, it really doesn't. It reached near its waist, and withdrew a long, curved, blade, illuminated only by his own aura. "I could have just simply incinerated you, you know. I could have just ended you in your sleep. But that does no justice to the glorious act of death. It must be embraced, faced head on. Now, let me show you your destiny."

With one horizontal slice, Choxorn was carved in twain at the waist. A black ooze seeped from the respective halves. After pondering for a moment, the attacker grabbed each half, and dragged them away from the door. "I wouldn't want to ruin my new palace, would I?" he pondered aloud. And so, he lit Choxorn's body ablaze, a sooty smoke seeping into the sky above.

"When they came back together in the morning, they found the evidence of last night's attack on the doorsteps of the throne room. Mainyu didn't show panic, but instead rallied for a greater energy to their activities. He wanted more fury, vengeance. His subjects took it up with more energy than previously, and it became the closest contest yet. Both woad&fangs and TheLastDays, who had been accused so many times before, were put forth as the two choices. But at the end, woad&fangs was selected during a tense tiebreaker."

"Despite his protests, he was dragged before their lord. Mainyu looked to the crowd, who had divided themselves into two very neat groups- one supporting woad, and the other against him. His face turned to an approving grin for just a second, before he accepted the sword from a kneeling servant, and ended woad&fangs before them. There was a stirring of disapproval from the crowd in woad's support.

'Excellent!' Mainyu proclaimed to them. 'Let your rage come forth! If we have erred today, solve it tonight! Struggle, fight, win! We are near the hour of victory! Pursue without relent, and we cannot fail!'

The crowd, half joyful, half confused and bitter, allowed themselves to be ushered from the chamber, each hoping the 'end' of this struggle would soon be at hand.

With the sun finally set, TheLastDays wound his way home. With so many lost, he was almost at a loss of what to do. But he had his garden, at least, planted in borrowed loam. He always enjoyed the contrast of its colors against Babylon's sandy hue. He made his way to the back, with a small pot of water. His poor plants had started to wither of late. He'd neglected them a bit amidst all the slaughter. He realized he needed to help them avoid his own potentially tragic fate. As he gave them their nourishment, he broke into song. He sang of the tragedy of all those who fell. He sung his hope that their choice hadn't been wrong. He sang of how hoped that all would end well.

But in the darkness, he soon saw a flame. It came from the alley, from darkest shade. "My goodness," he spoke. "Is this the one engaged in Mainyu's game?" As if to respond, he heard the unsheathing of a blade.

"It is finally time," a figure spoke. "For you to cease this bothersome life. That I have to kill you is almost a joke, as so many consider you the source of this strife." And so, it raised both hands to the sky. A great inferno came from his hands. "Now, The Last Days," it spoke. "You shall die. No more shall you interrupt my plans."

And so, a great flame scorched the land. The blast was so wide the attacker needn't even aim. TLD's great garden would soon be nothing but sand, as he, the plants, and the house were all torched the same.

"Now, I think I promised you a grand finale, didn't I?" the old man asked. The young girl's eyes lit up. "Yeah, like ten years ago granpa!" He chuckled a bit. "Now, I won't promise this is the last chapter of this tale, but....

When they got back together for the morning, only to discover another had fallen during the night. It didn't take long before a movement to set Chaotix before their lord picked up steam. A number of the group claimed contact with a religious cult to another god, and that she had discovered him to be abnormally powerful. Despite his protests, a great majority seemed that this was better than any other lead. When the bell was rung, and Chaotix was plainly the choice of the crowd, they ushered him forth. He gave them a glare, swatted their hands away, and walked up to the steps before the throne himself.

'Chaotix, kneel.' Mainyu commanded.

'No."

'What?!' Mainyu hissed. The crowd ushered themselves forward and surrounded Chaotix in a semi-circle. 'Do. As. I. Command!" Mainyu bellowed.

'No. No more of this. No more secrecy. No more pretending. The rest have fallen. Not surprising, I suppose, as weak as they were.' Chaotix raised his hands to the sky, and a flash temporarily blinded the room. Chaotix stood before everyone, an aura of white fire pulsing around him. The crowd staggered backwards, most visibly shaken. 'We will settle this, Mainyu. This land, the heavens, the netherworld. None of it belongs to you. How could it, when it is mine?'

'Everyone else,' Mainyu spoke with barely contained rage. Do not assist. I shall show you who the true Emperor is.'

A small storm of red lightning began to whirl around Mainyu, who held out his right hand. A wooden staff materialized in it, adorned with a brilliant red gem at its rounded end. Chaotix withdrew a sword from a sheath at his belt, a long, black, curved blade. The two stood about twenty feet away from each other, glaring, hatred in their eyes.

Chaotix made the first move, moving up the steps so fast it seemed he flew. In an instant he was in front of Mainyu. He sliced in an upwards motion, which Mainyu dodged with a sidestep to his left. Mainyu swung the butt of the staff in a short motion, delivering it to Chaotix' midsection. With a grunt, Chaotix lurched back for a second, before launching another strike with his sword in a leftward motion. Mainyu danced backwards to avoid the strike.

The crowd watched in a mixture of awe and confusion as the two battled. It was difficult to tell what was happening, as Mainyu's red lightning aura clashed with Chaotix' aura of flame. It was a marvel the two could even fight amidst the elemental mayhem which surrounded them. It was almost as though it were a dance, white fire and red lightning mingling and firing off in all directions.

Another backwards dodge by Mainyu saved him from a downward strike by Chaotix. Mainyu's staff darkened to a pure black, aside from the glittering gem. He raised his hands, and brilliant lightning erupted from the ground in an enormous circle around them. Chaotix attempted to leap backwards out of the circle of destruction, but could not escape. He staggered back, panting, struggling to keep his feet. Despite this, his white aura remained an angry, writhing white. Mainyu raised his right hand, and another tremendous volt burst forward, hitting Chaotix square in the chest. He roared in pain, and his aura erupted in a brilliant blast. Mainyu immediately turned on his heel and hid behind the golden throne. He could feel the haze from the battle launch itself into a full inferno. His back could feel the throne begin to melt, as he saw the white flames torch past on either side. After a few seconds, the flames died down. Mainyu rolled from out behind his cover, and saw Chaotix laying face first against the ground, his aura nearly gone. His breathing was heavy, slow, and deliberate.

'You... haven't.... won.... never.... win....' Chaotix whispered. With a grimace, Mainyu aimed his staff at his fallen opponent.

'We'll see about that, now won't we? But you? You lose.' Another blast of red lightning erupted from the staff, and engulfed Chaotix. As it danced across his body, began to dissolve into a dark crimson mist.

'My... my... my lord,' someone from the crowd stammered out in an awestruck voice, head bowed to the ground. 'It appears in the final blast that dcmort was too close. He is... indisposed.'

Mainyu composed himself. 'It is no loss. He has not been faithful or vigorous. He deserved his fate. Just as he did. Now, begone! I shall have no more of you tonight! We shall test his claim.'"

"So was that the end, granpa?" the young girl asked. "Was he telling the truth? And where are you?"

"Well, pumpkin, just let me explain...."

In an unmarked house, buried away from the main street in a dark alley, a man rapped his knuckles on a wooden door. "Please..... come in," a female voice announced from inside. He pushed the door open and walked slowly into a dark room, closing the door behind him. The room was lit only by a pair of candles at the rear. In between them, sitting on a wicker chair. "It is good of you to volunteer for this sacred duty, Major. This is, after all, only the beginning." Major Robert Dump bowed his head.

"It is as you wish, my Lady." She held her right hand up, palm facing upwards. A navy mist began to fill the room. MRD felt his throat clench up, and he began to cough uncontrollably. He could feel something warm and coppery in his mouth. His knees buckled, and he keeled over on his face, coughing up blood without relent. He managed to lift his head up for a final glance at her. She was glowing a light blue all around, striking a contrast with her crimson eyes. With her hand still held aloft, she clenched it into a fist. MRD felt an agony unlike any before sear through his chest. He writhed on the floor for a couple seconds before laying still, his fit of coughing having subsided. The woman stood up from her chair.

"Most generous, gallant sir," she said the limp body. "Now, I must insist you leave. Afraid you'll stink up the place." With a flick of her wrist, the door opened, and MRD's body went flying through the doorway, into the street.

"So no, pumpkin," the old man answered. "When they convened once more and another was gone from their ranks, an irate Mainyu demanded they find the one responsible. But, this time, it seemed those remaining were not keen for debate. A relatively quiet, quick run of votes against Glyphz assured his demise, with seemingly little doubt from the crowd that it was he who was guilty. Unlike previous, there was no arguments over previous behavior or any leads into his activities at night or anything of the sort. Just short, simple, quick acknowledgements that they wanted him to be held before their lord. Glyphz, to his credit, seemed to recognize his impending doom and only offered a little resistance."

"Wouldn't he defend himself more if he was the bad guy?"

"Oh, not always. Some people find it suspicious to be frantic in your defense. Others find it more suspicious when they seem to not resist enough. It really is quite a bind for when people found themselves accused by the crowd. Anyways, at the end of the day, at the ring of the great bell, he was dragged before their lord by the remaining crowd. Mainyu peered at the crowd as they stood gathered, solemnly around Glyphz. Then to Glyphz, then back to the crowd. It was as though Mainyu peered into the collective soul of the group, and something was just a bit off. Regardless, he had committed himself to this path. He would not deviate, not back down, not retreat. And so he accepted the sword offered to him by a kneeling servant, and ended Glyphz with two quick strokes. As they departed, Mainyu offered no words of encouragement no rally cry of survival and conquest. Instead, he allowed a single look to indicate their time was done for now. With his silent approval, the remaining crowd funneled out of the throne room, silently into the night...."

A lone figure strode through the empty streets of Babylon. The inner city had become an eery ghost town. In the beginning, there had been a small hum of activity. If you went strolling around, you would surely meet someone. But now, as this lone person walked slowly through, stopping at each split in the road, every fork, to see if there might be a hint of activity, there was none. Those left were apparently too afraid, or to paranoid, or to conniving to leave the sanctum of residence. That, it seemed, was the lot left to them, the loner thought. At least, until...

"Good of you to come, my dear," a dark, female voice called out from a rooftop, heard but unseen. "It is time to repay your debt."

The loner panicked for a second. "But... but... must you?" it responded. "Have I not shown anything but adoration?"

"Yes. You have been good to me. But not good enough. My adoration comes at a higher price. Besides... this is but an intermediary step. A small blip on a long, wonderful journey. I will still be your savior, now and forever. Come, Classical Hero."

Classical Hero closed her eyes, and leaped up the building in a single bound. In a wicker chair sat a woman, adorned in finest jewelry on her wrists and arms. She wore a sleeveless, long dress, colored dark purple. "I am ready, mistress," Classical Hero informed what she hoped to be a brave voice.

"Excellent.... so let it be." The woman raised her right hand, palm to the starlit sky. A dark blue mist began to flow from the hand, and wafted against the wind over to Classical Hero, and began to wrap itself around and over her. Panic began to take over her, but agony struck harder. Classical Hero bent over double as a searing agony, as though endless nails were piercing all over. Classical Hero blacked out before the woman on the wicker chair. The woman glanced down at the twitching form before her, waiting for it to finally lay still. A few seconds later, satisfied, she grabbed her chair with her left hand, and leaped into the sky with so little effort she seemed to glide.

"For the first time anyone could remember, Angra Mainyu approached the day's events with a foul look upon his face. As the round became an eery reenactment of the previous, a solemn event in which a single target was selected without so much as a disagreement or discussion, Mainyu's scowl began to increase. This was not going as he'd figured it would. Where was the chaos? The struggle? It seemed to be a slow march to the beat of a steady drum. By a large margin, Warman was selected as the last remaining hostile force lined against them. With a defiant glare, he allowed himself to be shunted up the base of the stairs."

"But Granpa, if he thought they were wrong, why didn't he do something else?" the young girl asked.

"Well, darling, above all, Mainyu was not going to go down a coward. He set his path. He was going to follow it, even to the end. Which is why, in the end, he would raise his sword to Warman, and end him with one stroke. With the feeling of an ominous cloud hanging overhead, the group was dismissed. A silent Mainyu turned on a heel back to his private quarters to brood over what lay in store.

It was a dismal night which Captain Blackadder was trudging through. A relentless rainstorm had been barraging the city for hours, bringing with it a sharp downturn in the temperature. To boot, fog had rolled in, slashing visibility to nearly none. But, with determination, Captain Blackadder continued to trudge through the torrent and fog to find his abode. An enchanting voice, seemingly singing through the night, caught his attention and brought him to a stand.

"Oh, Captain," it called. "My Captain. Your trip, our trip, is done. The prize we seek will soon be won." Captain Blackadder spun his head, trying to decipher the location of the voice, from where he was being summoned.

"Oh, Captain," it called once more. "My Captain. Rise up, and hear the bells. Rise up. For you, my flag has been flung. For you, my bugle trills." He whipped around, finally locating the source high behind him, upon a rooftop. He immediately vaulted himself up the nearest roof. He could see her outline on the next roof over. The rain was petering out fast. Blackadder wasted little time presenting himself to the woman, who was sitting perched on a chair, legs crossed. He kneeled before her, rain dripping from his face as he lowered it.

"Whatever it is you seek, my Lady. Whatever you desire, ask and I shall comply."

With his head bent over, he did not see her raise her palm to the sky. With the overbearing fog, he could not see the new mist carousing around them. Wordlessly, she imposed her command on him. With a cry of agony, Captain Blackadder fell before the woman, wracked in pain. A faint blue aura could be seen coalescing around her, gathering strength as Captain Blackadder's struggling became twitching, and his twitching became stillness. She reached down and touched the limp body before her, a wry smile on her face.

"My Captain no longer answers. His lips are pale and still. He does not feel my arm. He has no pulse, nor will."

"So this is it, darling," the old man said. He gave a curt glance out the window, which betrayed the fact that she was well past her bedtime. "When day broke again, only three came back. Mainyu didn't even speak to the three gathered before him. He sat on his new throne, tapping a finger impatiently as the three immediately began to fight. Riedquat started the nomination process by accusing Johnhughthom. John retaliated, which left Beskar the determining vote. It didn't take him very long. Despite a short bout of hesitation, he cast his vote for Riedquat, who's behavior and accusations became increasingly odd. The debate continued, as Riedquat was not a quitter. But still, when the bell rung, Beskar and Johnhughthom resolutely drug him before Mainyu.

'Each of you," Mainyu commanded. 'Gaze at me. Lift your heads.' Each one did so, each one with uncertainty in their eyes. Mainyu looked into each one's eyes, with an almost bored look. He looked from Beskar, to John, to Riedquat on his knees between them. Mainyu tilted his head sideways. Riedquat immediately began to gag and fell to the floor in pain. It took him only a second to stop moving. 'Now, as for you two... it is likely one of you has been quite a nuisance,' he said, a finger extended, bouncing it between the two. 'I should just end you both right now, to be safe. Yes, that would be.... safe. No. Go. If either of you are the last one, you have my permission. Go ahead. When the moment is correct, strike. You will either succeed, or you will fail. I will have proper arrangements made for any who come back tomorrow morning. Now... leave.'"

The girl pouted quizzically. "So who did it, Granpa? And what did he have for them? And where are you? And-"

"Ah ah ah, pumpkin," the man said with a wink. "Just let me continue. it's almost over. Now, as for that night..."

"Yes, that night...." the old man continued.

Following their dismissal, Beskar and Johnhughthom decided not to split up for the night. They went back to Beskar's home, just a short walk away. They didn't speak to each other, though they did give occasional glances. They arrived at a pair of gates leading to a secluded section of the city. Beskar opened them with a key, and welcomed the guest with a gesture. The two continued down a newly re-done road. A large, marble mansion lay off in the distance.

"It's not too bad, is it?" Beskar said with a coy glance. "I haven't remodeled the building itself in a few years though, you'll have to forgive its sloppy appearance." John simply shook his head in amazement as they drew closer. The marble was virtually spotless. He wished he could have seen it in the sunlight, in all its radiant glory. Still, it was far more splendid than any of the many hovels that littered Babylon. They arrived at a set of massive double doors at the front of the mansion. John moved up to lift the one on the right, allowing Beskar to enter first. A large chandelier hung from a large ceiling, with large, burned out candles. Beskar flicked a wrist and they lit, offering light to the forum. A large, rectangular, marble table dominated it, with purple cloth draped over it. "Would you like dinner?" Beskar asked John. He nodded. "Excellent!"

Beskar clapped, and a pair of servants, one male, the other female, emerged from wooden doors on either side of the room. They scurried before Beskar, head bowed the entire time. "Bring us the dinner," Beskar commanded. The two merely bent their heads further, and scurried through the door to the left of the table. "Please, John. Sit," Beskar said, indicating a leather-bound chair at the end of the table. Taking the cue, John sat down, watching Beskar wind around to the other end. "Well, John... were you wondering why I chose you?"

"A bit," he replied. "I assume you had good reason?"

"Oh, of course, my dear. You see, you have been there for me for so long. You've been with me through this chaotic time. Longer than the others. I wanted you to be the last one here, ready to see my plan finally come to fruition. You deserved that much, at least. Ah! And here we are!" The servants had returned, bearing large glass platters, garnished with several meats and exotic fruits. John raised an eyebrow at the lavish display. "Please, please," Beskar urged as the platter was laid before John. "Feel free. It is a small token of my appreciation."

And so with gusto John ate while Beskar sat and watched, refraining from eating. Upon finishing, he noticed the plate opposite him hadn't been touched. He wasn't sure what to make of the situation, nervously glancing around. "Well... aren't you hungry? It must have been a while since you've had anything."

"Well, my dear," Beskar responded, tapping finger to chin. "I suppose i haven't had anything since last night. I guess, come to think of it, it is time. But first, I must ask: was your meal satisfactory? Did it make you feel good?"

"Well.... it was fantastic, I suppose," John answered. The wording of the last sentence was strange, he thought.

"Excellent. It is good that you will die happy. As I said, fitting. And, it's always a bit more satisfying to take a bit of happiness with me." John was startled, but for some reason, he didn't feel panic. More like a strange curiosity. An odd mist began to creep into the room. "My dear, it has been good to know you. But, the time has come. Sadly, I must collect. No worries. I'll hold you closely, forever. So, don't think of it as a goodbye. Think of it as... bonding." Despite the pain in his chest, John sat in his chair quite calmly, until his body eventually failed, slumping him down his his chair. With that, Beskar stood up, surrounded by a sharp, blue aura.

"Time for one last date."

"Now, as the sun rose the next day," the old man continued. "Beskar arrived to find all the doors were opened, and all the veils and curtains had been tossed away. The throne room seemed odd with so much more sunlight streaming in. It was almost a shame that everyone else didn't get to see it. Standing in the middle of the room, at the foot of the stairs, was Mainyu. He held his hands out as Beskar walked in.

'Well, my dear. It seems you've finished. The winner of my challenge has presented herself,' he said. 'It's finally just the two of us. You. Me. Quite entertaining, really. The Heavens? The Netherworld?'

Beskar nodded. 'Yep. They all fell, one by one. As did that False King of Uruk. As did all the other mischievous forces. Just me,' Beskar said, pointing to herself. 'And you.'

'I'm impressed. I really must say, I am,' Mainyu continued. 'You wiped out my own guard, and survived the imminent threat of the Netherworld and the Gods, at the same time. I think we both know where this goes now. I know what you desire. You know what I desire. So, Ishtar,' Mainyu said, with his right hand held out. 'You have survived my tests. You have survived the tests of my enemies. None stand before me. The Heavens are vanquished. The Netherworld is vanquished. I may have lost everything in Babylon, but I have so much more. And so, the rest of the worlds are laid bare before me. Come, join me in rule. Be my queen, be at my side. The greatest, only King can have only the greatest Queen. Everything you desire- wealth, power, everyone else at our command. Well?'

'That's quite the tally you have there,' Ishtar responded with a mischievous smile. 'But gems? Finest clothes? Thrill of the hunt upon command? Hmm.... I suppose that's not a bad offer, not at all... my King,' she said, her grin growing wider. 'I fear you've given me no choice but to accept.'

'Excellent,' Mainyu responded. 'Now, let us go forth, and create a new world. For us.'"

With a sigh, the old man closed his eyes. "Well, my dear. That's it. How did you like it?

"But Granpa, where are you? There's only two people left. And you can't be Ishtar... but," the young girl queried to the old man.

He grinned, and for a moment, allowed his eyes to flash a violent red. The girl gasped. "What can I say, pumpkin. I was more adventurous in my youth," he said with a chuckle.

"But... but... aren't mommy and daddy human? And me?"

"Hehe... well, you see, pumpkin. After a while, grandma and I decided, we wanted to try letting humans run their own world a bit, so we didn't have to do everything. So, we adopted mommy and daddy when they were real young, even younger than you. And we raised them so they would be the best King and Queen they could be. That's why you get to be royalty! You might not be blood, but you're still family."

"Yay!" the girl giggled, reaching out to give a hug. Mainyu accepted it, before setting her back into the bed.

"Now, go to sleep, pumpkin. Daddy and Grandma have planned a celebration for our anniversary, I think..." And so he left the room and the young girl behind. As he jaunted down the hall, he allowed himself to drop his illusion. He turned for a moment to see himself in a mirror hung on a stone wall. His blackened skin was good as old. A shout from a stair case told him that he had alerted the party as to his nearby presence. "Ah, don't worry Dear, I wouldn't miss this for the world...."
