Something good to come out of American TV, for sure - probably my favorite running show, alongside Jeopardy and Family Guy. But the last time I saw EB warriors on the show, it was when an unarmored Celt went up against an armored, elite Persian Immortal. I'm not sure if the club the Celt used was historical, and certainly he would have had a spear to fight with in melee, but they did a good job, as the matchup was pretty much un-winnable (archery plus armor anyone?)
This time, we've got EB units showing up again, and it looks to be a historical crowning achievement - probably because there are actual historians on the show this time! Hannibal looks to be bringing an elephant, a falcata, and some soliferra to battle against Genghis - plus maybe some other weapons - along with a breastplate, helmet, and maybe greaves. We'll see how this matches up against the Mongol bow, lance, a saber, and whatever other tools of the trade the steppe-folk bring to battle!
The first 13 minutes air here. For those in the US, the episode airs this Wednesday at 10E/9C, I'm not sure about Europe. It will likely also be up on the Spike website for a week after that.

Hannibal will perform a double envelopment on Genghis and crush him!

Pretty upsetting the video doesn't work here...even more upsetting was that I waited for the ad to finish playing only to see "sorry this video is unavailable in your location". Be nice is the ad was skipable *sigh*

It would seem so
Man and I thought only we have these sick video limitations.

I'm watching it right now. Its amazing how the crew working on this video did a great job at describing the historical weaponry used in Hannibal's and Genghis' army, yet they fail real hard in showing the geopolitical situation on the Mediterranean back in Hannibal's time (04:18)

I dunno, Numidian cavalry fighting mongols could potentially be a good fight.

Very interesting Interesting but It would make much more sence to make Alexander vs Genghis and Hannibal vs Atila than how they did (Alex vs Atila and now this).

Agreed -_-' I bet that after hearing "Roman Empire" most of the audience was disapointed to not see any LS.

Just watched the episode. Without spoliers (if at all possible), what did everyone think? Initially I didn't think the winner was going to win, but after the armour demonstration I was sold.
It was ok, but imo in a real battle between them Hannibal wouldn't commit in a mad chasing rush, nor Gengis would charge head on...
Most likely if they ever fought would end up in both sides losing so many men that it would turn to a stalemate...

I think Telmugin won sqare ad fair... i mean he had 1400 years of development and he was neigbouring one of the most advanced civilizations in hannibals time period; China...

As much as I admire Hannibal I would bet all my money in Genghis.
Also to add that I think the armour factor was a bit exaggerated: sure it protects, but afaik in history skilled warriors were such as they trained targeting the weak spots, like armpits, neck etc...
In the fight for example they shown Hannibal trying to pierce the lammellar head on, that's kind of a moronic try...
So in an infantry melee my money goes to the falcata...
But as I said I don't see those two great generals blindly charging at each other...

i'm disappointed to see us here at EBclub giving this show anything but the highest derision :P
I dunno, Numidian cavalry fighting mongols could potentially be a good fight.
A bunch of unarmoured riders with javelins fighting a bunch of riders with composite bows, me thinks that would be a very short fight.

My attitude was the same going in, confirmed going out.

Seconded. Wars are more than 2 guys charging head on if the Rome.exe auto resolve is anything to go by.

Oh come on, it's good for a laugh and even the most hardcore historians need one every now and then.
Also next week's episode is going to be awesome (look it up if you don't already know what it is). :beam:

+1
I don't watch it for the historical 'accuracy', I watch it to see weapons in action. Decent entertainment!

I doubt it if Hannibal managed to envelop steppe horse archers of Mongols...
I have not posted a reply yet, since any comment in the immediate aftermath would, to put it lightly, be pungent. I post now, in the hopes that it is not so pungent.
personally, I think that the comparison between the two to be...facetious. they are essentially two armies from two different timeperiods, and different styles. and if they were to somehow meet on an open field, it would be pretty obvious who would win: Mongols were too mobile, and better equipped. Numidian cavalry can only do so much when they're hosed down by well organized, well led horse-archers.
and herein lay the problem with the show as a whole: they ignore the full context of the characters they use: this was really apparent with the Washington v. Bonaparte face-off: normally, if one was smart enough to weigh options properly, or in other words if Deadliest warriors did their job, Napoleon would have spanked Washington on his rear with a holed paddle, a la count spankula. sadly, that is not what happens in their laughably titled "simulation". they fail to take into account that Napoleon routinely fough with over 100,000 men, while Washington never had more than 20,000 men. and Napoleon was a better tactician and strategist.
what do they do instead? pit the two against each other directly (getting Napoleon's height wrong in the process-what this has to do with anything is beyond me.), with three or four other men (not even enough to man a gun), and Washington ends up winning (wth?).
now I know what some of you are thinking: what about entertainment value?
there is nothing entertaining about an idiot who's just there to go "AHHH!! HE SO DEAD!!" with a supposed medical education, or a guy who some how ****** up using a Kalashnikov (he did not switch off the safety). I mean, who messes up using a Kalashnikov?!

I take it you definately don't like the show. And you are right about situations. A battle is only the end result of a whole lot of other stuff in the lead up. Very passionate reply... Although I take it you have seen quite a few episodes?

no, I don't. I've grown to despise it.
yeah, I saw a few of them, though by no means all of them, or most: more like 40%. I knew it sucked when they pitted Spartans v. Ninja.... the first (known) episode in other words.
This is the show that pits a Samurai against a Spartan. How ridiculous can it get? And how a fight between a few men can represent a battle? I mean, anyone with some interest about warfare knows how different duels and battles are.
How ridiculous can it get?
Last night's episode saw Saddam Hussein fight Pol Pot, and next week's episode will have Theodore Roosevelt against Lawrence of Arabia. Pitting Spartans against samurai is one of the more pedestrian things they've done.
