Hi everyone,

We’re pleased to announce a brand new downloadable campaign for Total War: Shogun 2, which will be available for digital download from September.

Set 400 years before the Sengoku period depicted in Shogun 2, Rise of the Samurai pits you as the leader of one of six playable clans from the Taira, Minamoto and Fujiwara families. This conflict, the Gempei War, culminated in the first Shogun’s rise to power, and the consolidation of the Samurai as the ruling class.

The downloadable content brings with it a new campaign, which can be played in single and multiplayer modes. The six new clans bring with them their own unique traits, and between them will have sixteen new land units and ten new naval units.

On top of that, there are four new hero units, including the Tetsubo Warrior Monk Hero, armed with brutal studded clubs, and the deadly female Onna Bushi Heroine. There are also four new agent types, each with their own skill trees. From the seductress Shirabyoshi to the shrewd and zealous Junsatsushi Inspectors, each offers a new campaign experience.

What’s more, at the same time Rise of the Samurai is released, we’re also deploying a new patch. This will contain a huge number of fixes and feature upgrades, covering single and multiplayer gameplay. We’re already talking about some of these in our weekly update thread. Stay tuned to that for more as and when it’s confirmed.

So, in September you’ll be able to get your hands on:

Rise of the Samurai – downloadable campaign

• New campaign (The Gempei War)
• 6 new clans from 3 legendary families
• 16 new land units
• 10 new naval units
• 4 new hero units
• 4 new agent types
• 10 new mons, 10 new retainers

Thanks,

Craig

It looks like it should be fun and the patch should be good as well.

Urg. Sounds like it will probably be a great campaign, and the earlier time period sounds cool...

But why can't they just make a legit expansion? Expand the map to include Korea, add another faction, whatever. Expand the game I already know and love...just having more one-off missions doesn't do it for me.

Hopefully the patch will contain needed fixes and some nifty balances/additions.

I think the days of expansions coming on different discs are over unless its a stand-alone one.

Tsavong, you may well be right there. Now that the technology for it is there and buying on the internet well accepted, this will be the way of the future.

I think one of the reasons for doing it is, that it is probably easier to sell 10 small DLCs for 2$ each, than to sell one new CD for 20$. Not a bad thing for the customers either. This way we have more choice to decide which content we want and which we dont want. For example I may not be interested in getting another 10 new units with marginal improvements over the ones I already have (or are so overpowered that they get banned from Multiplayer games), but may like to play the new campaign. So I can buy the Rise of the Samurai for 7$ and give the SJ DLC for 2$ a miss. I get what I want for 7$ where otherwise I would have gotten it for 9$ plus some stuff I am not really interested in.

This is exactly the kind of DLC i was hoping for from CA. I'm anxious to get my hands on it. The Ikko-Ikki clan pack really surprised me by its quality, so i've got high expectations for this. ~:)

Wow, this is the first time I don't go 'bleh' upon hearing of a new DLC for any game I know of.
This might actually be the first DLC I'll buy. Ever.

You cant be joking me.I'd rather prefer to buy it on PC than buy on the internet. It is a bad thing!I would buy outside than having to pay 12 pounds for all these Shogun DLC packs, whicg is annyoning.

I have a feeling that this will not be the only expansion of the game.

There is still the post Sengoku years open to cover the Japan/Korean war of 1592 -1598.

(just like Shogun MI/WE  )

This sounds promising. Always like new campaign, and agents. Will guns and explosives be taken out? The Europeans didn't arrive until 15xx, right?

Well, considering the date of the new expansion is 400 years before the events depicted in Shogun 2, which would make the start date of the expansion 1150 (or thereabouts), I highly doubt guns will feature at all.

Shogun 2: The Rise of the Samurai (the coming expansion)

The Genpei War (源平合戦 Genpei kassen, Genpei gassen?) (1180–1185) was a conflict between the Taira and Minamoto clans during the late-Heian period of Japan. It resulted in the fall of the Taira clan and the establishment of the Kamakura shogunate under Minamoto Yoritomo in 1192.

(Europeans arrive and the mass production of guns begins)

The Nanban trade (南蛮貿易 Nanban bōeki?, "Southern barbarian trade") or the Nanban trade period (南蛮貿易時代 Nanban bōeki jidai?, "Southern barbarian trade period") in Japanese history extends from the arrival of the first Europeans (Portuguese) to Japan in 1543, to their near-total exclusion from the archipelago in 1614, under the promulgation of the "Sakoku" Seclusion Edicts.[1]

Shogun 2: (basic game & Sengoku Jedi Unit Pack and Ikko Ikki Clan Pack)

The Sengoku period (戦国時代 Sengoku jidai?) or Warring States period in Japanese history was a time of social upheaval, political intrigue, and nearly constant military conflict that lasted roughly from the middle of the 15th century to the beginning of the 17th century. The name "Sengoku" was adopted by Japanese historians in reference to the Warring States period in Chinese history (Sengoku jidai (戦国時代?) in Japanese) which preceded the unification of China.[1] Likewise, the Sengoku period in Japan would eventually lead to the unification of political power under the Tokugawa shogunate.

Shogun 2: ? (possible future expansion like the original Shogun: Mongul Invasion/Warlord Edition)

The two Japanese invasions of Korea took place from 1592 to 1598. Toyotomi Hideyoshi led the newly unified Japan into the first invasion (1592–1593) with the professed goal of conquering the Joseon Dynasty, the Jurchens, and especially Ming Dynasty China (Tenjiku,天竺),[9] and Spanish Empire (Nanban,南蛮[10][11]). The second invasion (1594–1596) was aimed as a retaliatory offensive against the Ming and Joseon Dynasty's Allies.[9] The invasions are also known as Hideyoshi's invasions of Korea, the Seven Year War (in reference to its span), the Imjin Waeran (Hangul: 임진왜란, Hanja: 壬辰倭亂 - lit. Japanese Invasion of the Imjin Year), in reference to the "Imjin (壬辰)" year of the sexagenary cycle in Korean,[12] and Bunroku Keichō no eki (Japanese: 文禄・慶長の役).

A quick run through http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ to show historical progression of Japanese history, and the game as it follows it

Having another DLC pack and an expansion would definitely suit the game and complete it overall.

I'd much prefer to see later periods, mainly for the fresh change. Fighting a non-Japanese enemy like the Koreans or Ming would be awesome.

That said...I was so disappointed the other day! Opened Gamespy and what was the top article? "Invasion of Korea DLC coming to..."
YAY! I was so excited! Opened the article, started reading, thinking "sweet! My dreams come true". Then i got about halfway down the page and realized it was for some nonsense game called Civilization 5.

Kuso. Oh well.
