View Full Version : I'm moving out!
After spending eighteen and a half years with my parents, I'm going to move out of house and into an apartment in the city of Leiden (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leiden), to fully concentrate on studying and stuff! In essence, I'm moving into a two-room apartment with a friend of mine, who'll be taking the upper floor, while I take the lower floor. 20 square metres for the both of us, including a small kitchen and bathroom.
So, you guys got any advice on how to survive in the big city, without mommy or daddy being able to help out when you're in trouble?
Oh, by the way, I'm going to study Arabic culture and language. Don't think that's too much of a surprise for people around here.

big enough?
i live in a university dorm though
i live in a university dorm though
Ah yes, that's the difference. While there are some dorms around here, usually students are forced to rent an apartment, because most universities are located within the cities themselves, especially the older ones that were founded in the Medieval or Renaissance period.

I still live in NYC........ the middle of NYC.
Some kids usually older ones have apartments off campus.
Edit: Not only that but as so happens my long established university is located in the middle of a relatively bad area of the city.

I thought about the military man but forgive my ignorance but doesn't the military pay for your uni after you serve, not before it? I got a friend who is planning on joining the marines but is taking community college before enlisting and as far I know, if there was a deal where he could get the military to pay for it he would have done it.

Mocking aside, I don't know why you are surprised at how ignorant I am about the military. I know a total of two guys joining the military, one I never talk to. Previous posts with MRD have shown that I have close to zero knowledge about how military life is or what programs the military has. ROTC until I wiki'd it just now, was just a bunch of letters to me. Never knew anyone in it.

Congrats on moving out.
You and your friend will likely hate each other in about 6 weeks.
The big reason will be food and cleaning the kitchen. But maybe you will work it out.
Do you plan on going home often, so your mom can do your laundry?
I am sure this will be a great learning experience.

Actually, I want to get my own washing machine so I can do my own laundry. My roommate's house is not that far away, so she'll probably be going home more often.
That, and I'll probably be spending as much time as possible at my girlfriend's place in Maastricht (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maastricht).
In other news, I don't think I've ever posted any thread that attracted that much attention. I guess I owe it all to the ever-nagging married couple ACIN and Centurion.

ACIN, what Cent is talking about is a deal with the army you can make that by doing ROTC and pledging army service you can get a full scholarship to that college. Thats the deal he is doing now at his university. Of course you also can serve first then go to college on the GI Bill but Cent's option is also open.
Anyhow, my parents are making me move out of the house after I get back from my gap year. Well, they said I need to find a job first that can pay for an apartment. Which makes me happy because frankly Im tired of their BS.

Kiwis over there will be insanely hard to beat, the whole country will be doing the Haka. Unfortunately they are hot favourites, but knowing us we tend to lift for one game every world cup and it's normally against the Kiwis. Also I got tickets to the Aus v USA game , hopefully I'll load up some photos come closer to the date.

wait hahaha i just looked at the link leiden is so itty bitty. That's a city?
So it is. But then again, in the Netherlands the distinction between city, town and village is all a bit blurred. For instance, The Hague, is not a city in the traditional sense of having city rights, it is in the sense that it is relatively large settlement; then again in Dutch there is no true distinction in size anyway: something is a hamlet, village or a city. Conversely, what in the USA typically passes for “town” based on size would here be called a village.

It's actually historical. A village or village has to be given the right to call itself a city. It has nothing to do with size though most historical cities are the larger 'towns' today. I know there is a city in Belgium that has less than 500 inhabitants.

Congrats, boy. :smoking:
Remember best mates are almost never the best flat/homemates -most times they turn out to be nemesis.
And that all the fuss generally stems from a wide array of bulldaisies ranging from cleaning/washing the dishes to absurd trifles such as some occasional negligence of flushing the toilet.
One needs to learn how to housekeep and that's the best way before getting married (if you ever do, that is).
Thumbrule: It's not your parents' home anymore. If you are picky, move out already. Remember that keeping your cool against problems and tolerating initial several mistakes of your room/home/flat/skyscrapermate and warning calmly if need be leads to a peaceful partnership. This is not to say let them have sex on you while you're planking. You're a smart one, you may decide the balance yourself.
Enjoy the scenery of forgotten tissues around the PC and the grin of your mate.

If utilities and such bills aren't included in the rent make a written agreement as to how they shall be shared and paid for. Saves a lot of misunderstandings when it's written down and signed by all parties. Be aware that whoever's name is on the utility bill is the one on the hook for failure to pay. Living on your own for the first time is a great learning experience. Congrats Hax.
If utilities and such bills aren't included in the rent make a written agreement as to how they shall be shared and paid for.
They are, thankfully. The rent's €710 a month, shared by the two of us, and €355 for 20m² isn't really that much in this particular city. Go us!

Looks like it was only a thing peculiar to the UK (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/City_status_in_the_United_Kingdom):
association between having a cathedral and being called a city was established in the early 1540s when King Henry VIII founded dioceses (each having a cathedral in the see city) in six English towns and also granted them city status by issuing letters patent.
