View Full Version : Game Crashes With Crusades

Hello, I just re-installed MTW within the past month and have been having a great time playing through the game again, as it was an old favorite. I've been having a lot of problems with crashes to the desktop; most of them were fixed when I installed the patch, and the remaining crashes seem to happen at random and rarely. The one exception is with Crusades; when I have a Crusade that has more than 1000 men or 16 units in it, selecting it and trying to move it results in an instant CTD, no matter how many times I try it. This is easily solvable by simply not using Crusades (or only using Crusades that I can move directly to the intended territory), but it would be nice if there was some way to fix this.
Is this a common problem? I'm using Windows 7 with MTW Gold (includes VI).
Welcome to the Org, white lancer! ~
I haven't heard this one before. Which patch did you install, the Gold v2.01?
It's just be my speculation, but this might be due to the next/prev button problem, just with the unit buttons which never would get seen except with a crusade that exceeds 16 units. :inquisitive:
Edit-> I wonder if this (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?103656-NEW-Fix-for-CTD-when-starting-campaign-%28Nvidia-High-End-Cards%29&p=2053359602&viewfull=1#post2053359602) would fix it.

Thanks for the welcome! :)
Yeah, I'm pretty sure the patch was 2.01. It almost certainly has something to do with having more units than is normally possible in a single stack--is there a common issue with the next/previous buttons? The Crusade thing freaked me out in the first game I played (as the Italians) as I was forced to spend years with a dying Crusade stuck in the middle of German territory, and I avoided using them for a while until my recent Spanish campaign. I'll see if the fix in that post works.
The speculation is that the way the next and previous buttons are rendered by modern cards/drivers cause CTDs. peter_de123 found (by process of elimination) that the buttons that got replaced by the P&M mod fixed the issue in the campaign map. You get the button files from the first post in that thread I linked to, Shandor used the same buttons for other up/down buttons and got around the issue he was having.

I haven't had the chance to try this fix, as I haven't had any time to play over the past couple of days (real life getting in the way ). When I opened MTW today, though, I noticed that in the upper right corner the version was listed as 2.0. I'm guessing this means I didn't actually installed the patch (I assumed I had, because I downloaded it and immediately afterward my major CTD problems got much better). I am not very PC literate, as this is the first time I've used a Windows operating system in years (I'm running it on a Mac using BootCamp), so installing patches is new to me. :dizzy2:

I am running into a problem with the patch. I downloaded it, but whenever I click on the Medieval_TW.exe file, it pops up with an error message:
"The program can't start because BUGSLAYERUTIL.DLL is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem."
I tried reinstalling MTWG (using Windows 7's "Repair" option), but it didn't solve the problem. What am I missing?
Which patch did you use? There is a different patch for the Gold version, located here (http://www.atomicgamer.com/files/57186/mtw_gold_patch_2-0-to-2-01-zip#).

That's the exact patch I downloaded. When I try to open the patch, it gives me that error message.
I think that happens when you try to run (double click) the compressed file inside the patch zip file. Save your old Medieval_TW.exe to a backup, then just copy the one from the zip into the MTW top level directory.

Alright, I believe I've got the patch and the fix from the post you linked installed correctly. I'm not sure what did it (or even if this is a permanent fix), but the random CTD I'd been getting in my English campaign seem to have disappeared. :2thumbsup: Haven't tried it with a Crusade yet, but I have one built...and the Egyptians seem to be wasting their poor Antioch, Tripoli, and Egypt provinces by not using them for trade. I may have to liberate them...
Hopefully it works. It would be nice to be able to steal some of Spain's border troops, as they're looking a bit dangerous to me right now. Thank you for your help!

How can you be sure that the Spanish will let you through? And, speaking more generally, what do the chances of being let through depend on? The difficulty, your being allied to the faction you are going to pass through, general trickiness of the AI?

I can't be sure if the Spanish will let me through, but I don't think the AI denies access to Crusades very often. I'm not really sure what factors it depends upon--sometimes diplomacy in MTW seems completely random. If they don't let me through, well...I have an excuse for an invasion.

In my experience, a fellow Catholic faction will always let you through--provided you are not at war. (They will want to avoid the instant excom that comes with refusing passage to other Catholics.) I have been refused by the Byzantines a few times, and think this has to do with faction-standing/diplomacy.

The Spanish did indeed end up letting me through. And this was in between wars with them--they attacked me, I attacked back and took Castile before getting warned by the Pope, and then I made peace with the Spanish and marched a Crusade through their forces (just before they decided to attack me again). So, yeah, I don't think it's very likely at all that a fellow Catholic would block your Crusade.
And the Crusade went off without a hitch, despite the fact that it had over 2000 men in it. Looks like the fix worked! :2thumbsup:

Good news indeed.

Thank you so much for your help, drone! It's much more fun playing MTW now that I don't have to be constantly worrying that the game is going to crash on me.
