This is my theory after playing too much NI, and TLK
the split from the history, as we know it, happened when the arrow, who get into his eye, is not enough to immediately kill him
1) While he was regrouping his men, an arrow falls to the sky and struck him in the right eye. However, instead of pierce further into his skull, Harold move his head at the last time, so the arrow only snatch his right eye, but not as deep, and he managed to rip the arrow and his eyes. While he was obviously in pain, he ignore it and continue to lead his men despite having blood spilled a lot from his eyes. Luckily for him, one of his lower soldier seen it, and immediately rip of some of his shirt to bandage Harold's now missing right eye, and he continue fighting.
2) Think Harold is allready dead, Duke William rush forward with his Cavalry, only to meet the one eyed Harold and his Housecarls has been prepare themselves again, and in a cry of defiance, Harold himself swing his axe and hamstrung William's horse. William falls to the ground, and Harold immediately seize the moment and behead him. Soon after, William's cavalry is on the rout and Harold himself, lifting the head of what we know as former Duke of Normandy high on top of a spear, heroically lead his men on the final Charge.
3) Seeing their liege's head on top of Pike, and the English troops regroup in revitalized spirit, the Norman army broke and surrendered, having nothing more to fight, and the fight is over. All surviving Norman nobles and William's knights, seeing that the Papal Banner is not enough to bring them victory, immediately surrender and the fight stops.
4) But the victory at Hastings was bought with a very high price, having both of his Brother Gyrth and Leofwine died before him, and a lot of Anglo-Saxon nobilities dies as well. And he was left in a state where he lost his right eye and can die anytime (due to possibility of infection), Harold, either reluctantly, or out of faith, merely dismiss the surviving Normans so they can back to Normandy, after swearing an oath never to invade England again, just as what he do with the survivors of Harald Hardrada's men.
5) And he didn't rip the Papal Banner of St Peter from Norman Army, instead, and with death could be sooner than later in his mind, he merely took the Papal Banner from the standard bearer, and personally carry it back to Westminster Abbey. There, he order the monks to write an apology letter to the Pope, and after wash the Papal Banner properly, he simply order it to be fold in proper container befit of the supposedly holy banner, and after arranging the political matters in England, he decide to carry it personally back to Rome, as all he want now is one last pilgrimage before his inevitable death.
6) Of course, looking for this display of piety and respect over Papal banner he shown, Harold, now merely accompanied with a handful of personal guards, crossing the Channel safely (along with Norman Survivors that return home), and go to Rome, in France, even every nobles show their respect toward him, and overall, his journey to Rome with the Papal Banner is safe without any interferrence.
7) Coming in Rome, Harold request to do a direct confrence with the Pope Alexander II over the matters of English throne. The Pope, touched by the "miraclous" survival of Harold while he himself carry the standard of St Peter, as well as his display of piety, finally recognize him as the rightful owner of the English throne. THere, after doing pilgrimage, Harold was lucky to have his wound treated by the top physicians, and he was recovered from his wound. From now on, he was known as Harold the one eyed, the mighty.
8) after returning to England, the English folks cheered over him, and the faith of his subjects unshaken, but in Normandy, the things goes very differently. Normandy have descended into brutal civil strife. French king, while still in his minority, can't overseen the matters and Another Dukes and Nobles exploit this fact and attack Normandy, Even the French seems to play a lot of encouragement behind this, and the Dukedom of Normandy, soon, become nothing but an annals of history.
9) And then, what could happened next?
