I was having persistent problems of failure to update ATI display drivers to 11.8 (latest official).
Today somehow I managed to get that driver installed without any errors (which had reverted the resolution back to an archaic one towards the end of the setup) however when I wanted to go back to 1680*1050 (right one for my 22'' LCD) after my OS restarted (Win7 x64), the choice just was not there and even PowerStrip fails to override the resolution although it presents the choice to change it.
What now ? My eyes are bleeding because of that 1600*1200.

Removing Catalyst drivers, clean sweeping the system for leftovers and re-installing didn't work. But I'm intrigued with 11.8 drivers giving "no INF found" error during that re-install. I'll retry this procedure with going with 11.7 this time.
Edit: Solved. I had to uncheck "Use EDID or driver defaults" in monitor attributes section of Properties (VGA Display) tab of CCC.
Somehow, system refused to see my monitor capable of what it was able moments prior to installing that 11.8. Buggy Catalyst drivers consuming hours again, gah.

Could equally well be buggy EDID. It's like manufacturers simply don't care about following specs as long as it works on whatever the current version of Windows is. If that means writing a piss poor driver which requires all sorts of hacks to “work” then so be it, or something....
Example: ASUS USB-N11 wireless adapters have the USB fields for “manufacturer ID” and “device ID” reversed! EDID info is like BIOS info in that it is often completely and utterly untrustworthy.
... Just you wait until we'll all have with EFI: it is typically even more buggy!

Now that I have spotted where the problem is, may I retry on updating my video drivers, what do you say ?
