View Full Version : Inquiry into the History of the Development of EB
Hi community. This is for the most part directed toward the current developers of Europa Barbarorum. I've been playing this game for a long enough time now but have never inquired seriously into the origins of EB and everything related to that thought. But I'm hoping to present (if possible, hoping dearly!) EB, how it works, what makes it so special for so many people, and the history of the development of EB in a class of mine which, simply put, looks at world history though games (from ancient board games to modern card or video games and so on).
In short, where can I start looking in order to get a decent in-depth idea of some possible answers to these questions and more? Thank you in advance.

Nice! Thanks for that famous thread. Now I wonder if there's any more primary pieces out there, since clearly this wasn't the true origin as the name of EB is being referred to, not created.

I wonder if the team will ever let us look at the internal EB development thead. That'd be pretty cool.

Of course. Just to make this clear though, I'm more gearing this toward the history behind the development of it, both as an idea or concept as well as an actual, implemented game.

The EB project started before the release of R:TW. The idea was to assemble information for CA to use in their game. It became clear fairly quickly that CA was going for a Hollywood-history vibe, and several members felt that if we would just provide CA with better information, they would include this in their work. With hindsight, that probably was naive. The design decisions for R:TW would have been set in stone at this point; and CA probably worried about legal and PR problems if they used outside information that turned out to be plagiarised/incorrect.
I am not sure where the name originated, but the idea had been kicked around in the Colosseum (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/forumdisplay.php?32-Colosseum) for a while. There's at least one older research thread (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?29229-THE-CELTS) that I could find. The original EB thread also spent some time in the Monastery (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/forumdisplay.php?16-Monastery), but I don't think you will find much else there.
Thanks Ludens, I can at least get a glimpse into what kind of research was done by those interested in getting CA to revise the historical basis for RTW.
An interesting read. I wonder if any of them knew what was going to be created from those rather humble beginnnings?
Also this (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?47080-so-what-quot-bartix-quot-and-what-faction-replaces-armenia-go-then-!!) was very very important for the making :P

Ah yes, that one. I have always found that thread to be the least understandable personally. I've never been sure how to approach that thread, what to get out of it, and so on.
There is an official mod history thread in our internal forums, although it is unlikely to see the light of day for various reasons.

Unlikely, there is too much private stuff on there for it to ever be made public.
Argh, that would have been so interesting to read (not the private matters ofc)...

No doubt you all talking behind our backs. "God, I really hate that Vartan guy" or "Damn fans always on our backs!" - I assume the internal history forum is riddled with stuff similar to that

I doubt it. More likely it's just people discussing things in their private lives that they don't want to share with the entire internet.

In that case who may I contact since I'm trying to do this history of EB? :operator:
The man you want is Teleklos Archelaou (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/member.php?10412-Teleklos-Archelaou) .
Special Bonus release with EBII. vartan presents "An historically accurate biography: The making of EB", fifteen chapters complete with over 200 screenhots, edited by Ludens. Available in bookshops soon.
...edited by Ludens.
Why? Are the EB members dressing as gasatae?

Whoa there. Thanks, but this is just a very short presentation I wish to do. It would be nice if presentation was based on text, but looks like it will be other way around (time is constrained here at moment).
Why? Are the EB members dressing as gasatae?
No, no. It's because Ludens is just awesome like that. If polytheism was the majority religion type today, he would be, in many polytheistic religions, the God of Editing.
EDIT: Thanks bobbin!

Vartan, you should make a movie about the creation of EB. You could have a dramatized historian writing a letter to Creative Assembly. When the letter isn't returned (or returned with a negative response) the historian would come to the realization that sometimes the operation of the machine becomes so odious, it makes him so sick at heart, that he can't take part. He can't even passively take part. He'll come to the realization that the only way to get things done is for him to put his body upon the gears, upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus and just do the work himself. He gets a team together to get the job done, and EB is born.
It'd make a great movie.

 You would! And of course. But don't forget that a storm is coming. One not of water, but of blood. Gears. Levers. Storm. Etc. Et al. Enjoy the show!

I am not sure that's a compliment ~;) .

I think a giant flyier on top of Mt. Everest saying "It's a compliment" is less obvious than that.

I doubt you'll ever see the internal threads except on wiki leaks.

Or he secretely makes 17 accounts and tries to infiltrate the EB team.
