Can anyone shed any light on which language family the Yuezhi belonged to? Whenever i sit down on the toilet i thumb through my copy of the Penguin Atlas of Ancient History for some light reading. The author suggests two possiblities for the Yuezhi language; Tocharian or Aryan. I was wondering if anyone could enlighten me as to which of these languages was likely the tongue of the Yuezhi?

Any information on the Tocharians or the Kushan Empire would likewise be appreciated. Thanks!

I think I will go and read my atlas now......

Tocharian. I would definitely go for Tocharian.

Please refrain from using "Aryan" to denote a language as it is no longer prevalent. On that note, do you have in mind Old Persian or Sanskrit? Or do you mean the Indo-Iranian proto-language of the BMAC region's people?

About Tocharian, I'd be highly skeptical. We don't know much about it, and there's much speculation.

Made a brief answer to this in another thread: https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?89142-New-factions&p=2053380918&viewfull=1#post2053380918

There's been quite a lot of ink spillt on this issue though, so it takes quite some time to cover the entire literature on it.

EDIT: Gah! For some reason, the link led to my user profile and not the thread in question. Should be fixed now.

Not chinese. Tocharian.

Besides, why else would I be talking to a Yuezhi man on the phone? It's easier to send a messenger on a horse.
