Gah! No! That's one of my favorite series of all time. Pardon me, I'll be sobbing to myself in the corner.
Oh noes. STALKER may have been a mess but it's the last oldschool pc-game imho.
So sad I killed 15 kittens in rage-grief.
The news gutted me when I saw it. Those games were pretty much my favorite shooters of all time. Such a wonderful experience to explore those worlds and such a unique environment for gameplay. This studio closure ranks up there with Black Isle on my KHAAAAAN list.
Well here's some concept art for STALKER 2 (http://www.actiontrip.com/link.phtml?http://blog.ascian.me/2011/12/leaked-screenshots-concept-art-and.html), which you can look at if you feel like crying.

Err... what?
Apparently Grigorovich was unhappy with the progress Stalker 2 had made, and Ukranian law enforcement was interested in taking control of the company.

Don't let Crazed Rabbit read that!

Gah! That's one of the few FPS series I enjoy and there's not much else out there like it.
Does noone read the Gaming News Sticky anymore or is it just that people ignore me?
Apart from that, sad, yes.
Even though they were sometimes incredibly buggy, I really liked the games.
I recently replayed bits of all three with the complete mods (http://www.moddb.com/mods/call-of-pripyat-complete), just because I could.

I'm gearing up for a shot at Shadow of Chernobyl with the Complete mod - I'll try to get through it in memory of GSC.

Honestly? I ain't even mad, bro. There are only so many iterations of the same game before it gets stale. At least they closed up early instead of letting the series fester like so many other modern military shooters.
I liked the idea of Stalker but not the gameplay.

Pretty understandable, gameplay was kinda broken (at first at least the expansion improved it considerably)
Excellent retrospective by eurogamer http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-12-18-retrospective-s-t-a-l-k-e-r-article
Remains the best setting ever created imho. Cool video of the real place: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ZZZRufvG8o&feature=related

Actually, I felt like they were finally getting where they were going with Call of Pripyat. Rather than milking the same formula, it was more like they kept trying to hit a mark ...

Yeah, IMO CoP was far and away the best of the three. Clear Sky had some interesting concepts behind it, but the implementation actually killed the feeling of solitude that made the setting so great. I personally put Clear Sky at the bottom, with SoC second and CoP first. I had high hopes that Stalker 2 would continue on from the improvements they had made with CoP.

It's alive! (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-01-12-stalker-2-not-cancelled-says-dev-gsc) Language warning on some of the comments.
A little more from the team's Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/officialstalker): "Yavorsky talked to on the phone about STALKER 2. The situation is as follows: the team is currently in talks with potential investors, looking for people willing to invest in the development of the game. The project is still in limbo, but there is hope."

They were working on STALKER 2 for a period of over four months with no member of the team receiving pay, according to their FB page. I can't even imagine being in that situation and I truly feel for each member of that dev team. That's how reluctant they were to not let this thing die.. but in the end, what can you do when an IP lawyer tells you that your baby isn't yours?
In light of that there's no way I can be upset about this. I'm disappointed beyond reason, absolutely, but they deserve to work on a project that puts food on their tables. With Stalker 2 being a dead end, i can't fault them for seeking the only way out they could and changing it into something else. Godspeed, STALKER devs.

I say Dragon Age: Origins was the last one but that series has been Mass Effected so it's dead too. :(

You should check out the Indie game scene. Old school PC gaming is doing rather well there. An example would be Legend of Grimrock (http://www.grimrock.net/).

At least this looks good
