View Full Version : A question for the Amercian (service) men & women: ever heard of "Semper Finest" ?

Reason I am asking is because I received a rather dodgy e-mail requesting a link exchange with www.europabarbarorum.com to promote their website www.semperfinest.com. Then again, their website doesn't seem to have an obvious “fake” element to it: quite the contrary, in fact.

Which leaves me wondering. Usually when a dodgy SEO type decides to go spam some website admins they link to a minimal website with only minimal functions, and certainly not to something with a store and/or customer service number. The one that got closest was a fake French antiquarian based in Wisconsin who thought that broken French would add to authenticity. This is clearly something else, the blog has actual content on it with the name of one of the authors matching the name of the person who owns the semperfinest.com domain name.

Furthermore the style of the website design fits the combination of “USA”, “prepackaged”, and “budget”. So it could be they went with a budget webdesign & SEO package without knowing that it is delivered through questionable means. Therefore I am inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt and reply directly by mail to the domain owner.

But before I do so, I thought that the Americans (especially the men/women currently in service) on this board might know more. I'd be grateful for your opinion on this site, and in particular whether it is fake or legit.

(PS: SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation in case you didn't know. Sadly, often this means little more than creative ways to say particular words and their synonyms as often as possible in a given piece of text without being witty or outright (link) spamming.)

Well, they have ~800 Facebook fans, ~300 Twitter followers and searching for "Semper Finest Scam" doesn't seem to bring up any complaints about them.

Not that I'm an expert but they may just be a small organization. And maybe one of them likes EB.

Somehow I don't think so:

Dear [Sir/Madam],

We have visited your site and found it very interesting, resourceful and relevant to our business,
We would greatly appreciate it if you could provide us a link from your related web site page of PR1

That kind of phrasing I'd sooner associate with a hitherto unknown Nigerian prince in urgent need of funding to retrieve his heritage, than a Marine's mom, if you know what I mean?

Huh. As someone with an irrational dislike for Marines...

A: Do you have to be a part of something to know that it is better? No, to say otherwise is simply arrogance.
B: Did I say that they were better than the Army in this thread? No. I posted a pro-Marine flag because GC was bashing them.
Seriously Cent, get over yourself.

the fact that the Marines have much, much better looking uniforms True
In fact, they are under-funded, under-equipped, True
and their training is woefully outdated. I think many would disagree there.
But that is definitely not a topic for the frontroom! True

Face it GC, you just want to wear those Dress Blues. ~;)

Come on guys, do you need to derail a thread with this?

@Vuk, Centurion: have either of you heard of Semper Finest before? What is your opinion on the site?

It certainly looks incredibly legitimate. If it is a scam they almost deserve it quite a bit of effort put in.

I live in a navy town so the sort of care package drives that go on do tend to be Marine Corp so if I hear anything about them I will let you know.

All of your comments are completely unfounded or based on a mysterious prior service friend you have.

Army has dress blues now too I have a pair. But yes the old greens are positively hideous.

Ick, no. The new blues are awful. The greens had dignity and class. Thats been replaced by a flamboyant wannabe Marine outfit. Boy am I glad I got out before they made me buy one of those.

*Although I am saddened that I joined right as the ACU became standard, and got out right before they began to phase it out. I hate ACUs.

while i disagree on blues (the covers are a thousand times superior at the least) i concur on acus. they are pieces of crap. like serously what exactly do i blend in with? they keep me cold in the winter and over heated in the summer, the velcro is crap and basically they have no redeeming qualities. I think we are switching over to multi cams though. I will get the joy of suffering through acus until i commission im sure.

You assume too much. What I know or believe about the Corps comes from a great many sources, as I am sure any person's information on any subject. Much I learned from my father, who served in Vietnam, I have known quite a few guys who have served and whom I have learned from. I have read many things, news articles, books, etc that have added to my knowledge. I have also been to a great many military shows, talked to many vets, etc, etc. A lot of my knowledge of firearms comes from the fact that I have been shooting since I was 5 years old and probably have more general knowledge of firearms and am a better shot than many military men.
No, I was not in the military Cent, but that does not mean that my opinion is not informed, or that I have no right to have it.

There is the Army blue uniform, and then there are Dress Blues. ~;)

They might have been a victim of phishing themselves. The email may not have come from them at all. Just a thought...
