Are stupid. They serve no true purpose unless they relate to the image that the company is trying to establish for clients. Employees who do not interact in an area where clients can see them should be allowed to wear essentially anything they'd like. I don't know why companies are so absurd regarding jeans. I wear them everyday anyway and tell them to eat turd. And I just won a free trip to Disney World for being awesome.

I don't just mean uniforms, I also mean t-shirts and jeans. Why do we have to wear khakis and not jeans? It made sense in Catholic school, where they were trying to save parents money and keep kids from focusing on vanity, but we are adults now. If I had my way, everyone would wear a t-shirt and jeans to everything.

About half our office wear sandals in summer... I wear (skinny) jeans everyday... Only when meeting with customers does anyone wear formal attire. So yes, I agree.

Kinda funny, there is a bit of a riot here about dresscode here as teh queen wore a headscarve when entering a mosque in Oman. I'm still undicided on what to think of it, leaning towards just paying respect, I absolutely despise the very existance of the royal family but here goes

Well, safety can justify a dress code just as much as meeting with customers. Steel-toed boots and hard-hats in a work zone, biohazard suits in a contagious disease lab, or whatnot. But no, I'm not a big fan of formal-wear at work just because.

Wear what you like within reason, and only penalise if one's productivity isn't good enough - better to be a great worker in a t shirt than a complete waste of space in a snappy suit.

There are of course some fields where within reason is broad, such as scientific research.

in my office only sales personnel must wear suits...
we grunts in the software development department wear shorts to work in the summer

I disagree, at least when it comes to school. Look at what most kids today are wearing. Ripped jeans that are hanging off their rear ends, mini skirts and tank tops with copious amounts of cleavage, I do not think that is proper for a school enviroment. While out of school I have no objection to the whole mini skirt and tank top thing (hey, Im a guy), I personally think that in school it is proper to require that students and teachers dress in a certain manner that shows a sense of maturity and respect. Though while a strict uniform as in slacks, dress shirt, and sports jacket is excessive, the dress code I had in school, khakis and polo shirts with no large brand names on it, I found were more than sufficient to encourage a sense of maturity and respect among the students.

As for the work enviroment issue, I cant really comment since Ive never been in one, at least not yet, so I feel my opinion doesnt matter in that area.

Uniforms in a workplace setting can be a way to denote your station, you may need a change of uniform to emphasis authority etc etc.

You wear a formal suit so your upper management, you wear a lab coat therfore your a supervisor, you wear a coloured shirt so your a general operative.

Even a place we think is all california software chic will still have subtle indicators of who is the boss or the employee.

Supervisors tend not to wear the fullspacesuit attire in INTEL unlike the ordinary employee, even outside the fab the clothes are a little more smart casual as opposed to wealthy student the higher up the food chain you go.

Suit only when meeting clients and on formal stuff; apart from that, anything goes (within reason of course).
