Last September. It was done because the Backroom is one of the most popular fora on the site, but it did not contribute to attracting new members as it could not be seen until someone was already registered. There is a way to turn it off, but doing so would seem to defeat the whole purpose of the forum being visible in the first place.

I will repost a comment I made on this same issue a while ago:

We do understand that this is an inconvenience for some members, but please understand that it's better for the Org as a whole. Our stats show that the Backroom is a significant draw on the Org, and having it hidden like it was reduced the number of people who would find it and post in it. Having the Backroom open to viewing prior to registration is for the good of the site as a whole.

As policy, accounts and posts are not deleted wholesale except in extraordinary circumstances as it destroys thread continuity. You have the ability to edit any post you have already made though, so you can already remove anything you've written in the backroom that you would prefer not be public. Any admin-level action beyond that will have to be cleared by the Forum Admins. I suggest you PM frogbeastegg, Secura, and Ser Clegane if editing isn't good enough for you.
