View Full Version : Pick your superpower

In my most lonely hours, when I’m struggling to get to sleep, I’m envisioning scenarios of what could be.
Or I’m just having fun thinking of the consequences of certain tweaks to reality.

What if … you could pick 1 superpower
What would you do with that superpower? What would be the (dire) consequences? …

This is not originaly my idea but unlike superstrength, superspeed, indestructibility, … I would like to have save points. During my life, I would be able to make a certain amount of save points to which I could return in order to redo what came after.

What would this power mean:
- Knowledge of important actions/decisions due to trial and error
- Immortality by ‘reloading’

What would be your superpower?

The Soviet Union!

Er, I mean...

Having precognition would be pretty neat. OTOH, it could easily lead to a life of boredom, or depression when you can predict bad things that will happen and simultaniously realize that there's nothing you can do to avoid it.

Your life would be unbearable.

The bearableness of something is dependent on the strength of character of the individual. Besides, isn't life already exactly that?

Montmorency
02-17-2012, 08:50
Strength of character? What?

Think hard about what perfect recall would really mean. Just think it through.

I also notice that you want perfect recall of everything "your senses perceive". Leaving aside the psychological trauma, you do realize that would leave you in constant pain?

I guess I should clarify, the ability to recall it would be on my command. I would be sitting in calc class, and think to myself "what did I learn about finding the volume of a parallelepiped." and then, my mind would remember the class I had 3 weeks ago when we covered it and I would remember how it was done.

Does that somehow make life unbearable?

Let’s list the horrible consequences shall we:

Super-seduction. Do I really have to explain the consequences?
Vuk gets killed by a lynch mob of angry husbands and boyfriends

I'd take Wolverine's powers in a heartbeat: Indestructable, possibly Immortal--can be beaten but can't be killed. If the pressure of being mortal is lifted, then you're free to enjoy life and take as long as you want doing it.
Of course, Time Travel is tempting too.. like Hiro from Heroes.
Gelatinous Cube gets eventually trapped somewhere and has to spend eternity alone with his thoughts.

Q. Nuff said.
The power to invent bond gadgets?
Hmm, somewhere in your career, you’ll misplace an invisible car.

Telekinesis, because flight automatically comes with it.
What will you use your powers for?

time control. duh idjits its game over. think like a remote control, pause rewind. and no i wouldnt go far back in time and alter events.
Eventually you’ll become a mentally old man in a young body potentially in a time he doesn’t know anything about. Think about the hard time old people have to adapt to the internet and cell phones but multiplied by 1000 or more.

The ability to always recall everything my senses perceive at any given time and any knowledge I learn.

So you'll be Kim Peek (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kim_Peek)?

If we're allowed to pick only one, then I would probably go with telepathy.

...But only if I can control it to at least a degree. If I were unable to block out other people's thoughts & emotions, I'd quickly go insane!

If I had to choose, would be two powers -

- Morphing, like Mystique from Xmen. Able to change my body shape to anything I liked. Male, Female, even a sheep if I wanted to. The possibilities are endless.
- To be able to choose the moment I die. Rather like invincibility, without the whole clause where you are stuck there till the end of time. I have the option to simply "give up the ghost" if I desired.

And that would be a disadvantage to non-powered how?

You are right: all would be equally disadvantaged for what I'm considering here, unless one's power is to somehow make oneself resistant...

I would like to also mention the suggestion that time travel would be a fine superpower to possess. As long as you didn't mess with the time stream or anything and fudge with history. Believe it or not (probably believe) I have always wanted to court a woman from the 18th or 19th centuries. Yes...I do find myself strange at times...

Soviet Union is the best, bar none, both in the superpower and superpower kind of way.

Let's face it:

1) Half the world obeys you
2) The other half fears you

Flight? Pfff, I can fly wherever I want. Time control? Stupid, I want control in my time not control of the time. Invincibility? Check. Invisibility? Why, I'd do whatever I want anyway...
