Now I know every country makes some mistakes. God knows the US does. But when it comes to reality TV, only two things excuse high ratings for reality TV. 1. If it is original. or 2. If it is full of crazy people/people hired to be crazy.

"Farmer Wants a Wife" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Farmer_Wants_a_Wife_(Australian_TV_series)) is NEITHER OF THOSE. Now the US has watched some really dumb things, I mean really dumb things. But even we looked at Farmer Wants A Wife and said, "Put that crap on the CW network and give it one season." You Australians have not only given it a second season, but the ratings increased by an average of 190,000 people. Then you proceeded to churn out 4 more seasons.

Explain yourselves Aussies.

EDIT: I posted this here, because I am pretty sure the language in this thread might get a bit heated.

16 SEASONS

Is it really 16 seasons, or are they just re-running one season and photoshopping all the faces every year?

In a country where 90% of the creatures or environment can kill you, shouldn't their TV shows provide the same risk?

We have way too much cheap and nasty TV ie reality shows. It is the cheapest way that channels can meet their australian produced quotas.

As for deadly reality TV just look at the Crocodile Hunter or Bondi Beach.

There seems to be a ratings backlash at the moment in Australia against reality TV.

We have a Dutch version of this show; never knew that it was a copy of a foreign format, allthough I should have expected so.

The only reality show that appeals to me even slightly is Expeditie Robinson, which is more or less the Dutch version of Survivor.

So are your quotas the same as ours, one third?

It's happening all over, Canadian idol got canned years ago. These days only CBC and Discovery Canada produce reality shows. Canadas biggest know-it-all, ugh! Hand grenades for all involved.

When you posted the title "I have a problem with all the Australian's on the org here.", it's almost as if all Australians on this forum are to blame for this ... umm... "quality" TV show.

I never watched that show. Then again, I don't watch any TV, since most shows are :daisy: anyway.

Almost every country has a show about farmers seeking a wife.

It was started in the UK. So the American one is also a copy. Though the US one was revamped to be something between the Bachelor and Survivor…

All of it is cheap junk to fill the time between commercials.

If no one watches it, it still makes money.

It would seem only the Brits are making really good shows these days.

Someone from the US complaining about someone else’s Reality TV is quite rich though.

Pot, kettle, black!

Survivor is the only reality show I watch.

But there are two that I could be tempted by. First up - The Littlest Groom, brought to you by Exploitation Inc.

Secondly Flavour of Love... starring Flavor Flav... And yes, that says Season 2.

Most of the programs (and I'm not just talking about reality TV unfortunately), especially on the 3 commercial channels, are rubbish. The news and current affairs, while way better than Fox (not that that is comforting) is terrible and getting worse. Leading off nightly news with celebrity gossip and fashion shows? Err, not what I'd call "news".

I pretty much only watch ABC and SBS.

We had a show here called Cabin Fever or some derivation of that where some people were supposed to sail a ship around Ireland.

Why anyone thought a group of inexperienced people could sail a ship in our Atlantic waters is beyond me, naturally the boat sank off County Donegal.

It's my understanding that Australia has a large surplus of women. For that alone, it is on my list as a top vacation spot.

Don't get your hopes up.

Surplus yes, In Sydney yes, In Surry Hills you bet, Oxford Street you'd better believe it.

Best time to meet them: next month.

Recommended list of things to do to meet them. Be open minded, adventurous, athletic and a lesbian.

Some American complaining about our shows. Remember that when you point the finger three are point towards you. There is just so much crap out of the States that it is far worse than anything we have done. Real Housewives rubbish, Jersey Shore. The list can go on forever.

Still, it's a nice counterpoint to those who post clips of Ozzie kids always talking :daisy: about the U.S. What's their beef? McDonald's not buying enough Kangaroo meat for their burgers?

That's a joke BTW. It's old and may not translate well.

The cheapest and nastiest of all is Border Security. The reality show that the Nazis would have made.

Yes, the promos (since I refuse to watch it, not to mention nearly anything on the 3 commercial channels) seem very much like the show is all about "what did this dodgy foreigner(s) do this week? What outrageous illegal things will they be charged with?". Seems like there are big bonus points if the person is Asian/African/doesn't 'look Australian' (ie non white).

But when we have shows like Today Tonight and ACA, the bar is set awfully low.

The New Zealand version, on the other hand, is absolutely hilarious, because nothing bad happens in New Zealand and none of the criminals are doing anything all that bad.

Then how do they show the good stuff like drug mules and the like?

Have to have dramatic seizures and arrests or there is no show! Hard to hype arresting people for bringing in a few strange tropical fruits.

Maybe being boring does have its benefits. Less hysteria and paranoia is a good thing.

I went through the airport in Queenstown, NZ, about 6 months ago. The officer there was absolutely hilarious. Really cheerful and they weren't that tight on security. It was a legitimately pleasant experience for me.

I had a flight to and from the Netherlands about a year ago. Going out we were all treated as seditious terrorists who only the vigil of the staff prevented from blowing up the pain. Everything searched / scanned.

Coming back a day later we had a brief glance of our passports and all got on. No plastic bags for hand luggage, no checks for taking fluids on board.

Amazingly, the plane didn't blow up on the return leg of the journey!
