I'm looking a a decent mod for RTW and I've tried EB but it doesn't suit my style of gameplay,as I like to build up first, them go to war,nor do I like dealing wih the amount of new units it has on offer. I'm just looking for a mod that makes the AI decent hard without giving them cash, and maybe makes them actually stick to treaties and not invade me after the turn I make the agreement, and secondly it must allowfor the re-training of merc troops, as I usually use a good selection for my armies to full in holes and I dislike after I manage to get them experience upgrades and such, having them worn down by attrition. I do try and conserve them, but I can't do that forever.

Well really for RTW I'd say Rome: Total Realism is the way to go, it's the usual competition to EB.

You cannot retrain mercenary units in RTW.

What I do is this: keep a reserve of whatever mercs you have. You'll notice that certain areas have mercs that come with experience chevrons already...Laconia for hoplites, Thrace for Bastarnae, Crete for "Creeshan" Archers, Arabia for Arab Cavalry, etc. Use these troops to replenish your front-line mercs (make sure they have the same weapon and armor upgrades....if those are less than your frontliners, your frontliners will get degraded!).

Keep these merc replacements in a nearby fort to avoid the plague getting to them. If your army is on a distant shore, keep some mercs offshore in a fleet.

I use mercs extensively, no matter who I play as, and these are battle-tested suggestions. Hope they can be of some use...
