Hello there,
im seeking advice on using elephants. I already know how to use them very well, but i was wondering how they go against other elephants? its it the first person to charge wins? I usually use javelins to rout elephants but i was wondering if i could use my katapract elephants against Carthaginian forest elephants and not take too many caualties. im hesitant to try this because my army is a long way away from the recruitment zone

Theoretically, Cataphract Elephants should win against all other types (they have javelins, more armour, and superior morale). So far, I've only used other elephants in pachyderm fights though. Anyway, the best unit for such a job would be some kind of mounted skirmisher, in your case Hetairoi Aspidophoroi. Or Dahae/Arachosian skirmishers - they have more ammo.

african bush elephants are bigger than the indian ones arent they? would they just crush mine? i still havent tried it yet and i only have one unit of skirmisher cav which isnt doing all that much since carthage brings 3 units of these beast and i only have one

Strictly speaking, they are bigger, however IIRC the regular Indian elephants have similar attack and defence (and HP). As I said, cataphract elephants should beat all other elephant types thanks to armour, discipline and javelins.
Bush Elephants are the easiest to rout (they have the lowest morale value of all recruitable units in EB), so you should try archers with flaming arrows too. If you have too few skirmishers in your field army, you could hire one or two units of mercenary Peltasts or skirmisher cavalry just to be on the safe side. Even regular Akontistai are super effective against elephants (the problem is that they're almost useless once their missiles are spent).

Do elephants scare elephants?
IIRC yes. I know for a fact that Gaesatae scare each other.

Elephants have the frighten_foot and frighten_mounted attribute. For Gaesatae it's clear they're considered infantry and are effected by frigthen_foot. The questions is if elephants are considered mounted internally. I could not find out so far where units are categorized mounted/foot/?, it does not seem to be in the unit text-files but I might be wrong.

There are mounted attributes but apparently also differences between horses and elephants, and from vanilla, camels too. I'm not sure if frighten mounted refers to "mount" or "category"

Would Gaesatae ever fight each other and frighten each other? When wild elephants fight do they 'frighten' each other? I doubt either of these.

ofc gaesatae frighten each other it´s a question of point of view when you look at yourself you are looking down on yourself while when you´re looking at the other gaesatae you´re only looking half down on them wich creates an optic illusion regarding size wich ofc scares most men since men don´t like comparisons where they aren´t or don´t feel praised
