View Full Version : Does AI gain EXP from failed assassination attempts?

I've been trying to kill a very pesky Lusotan general in my KH campaign who keeps eluding death on the battlefield. He's retreated to a settlement now while he plots his next move and I've had a spy and an assassin on him for at least a year and have failed to 'vertically expel' him 3 times. During this time he's gone from 3 bronze chevrons to 2 silver without ever leaving the settlement (and of course fully rebuilt his bodyguard heavy cav to full strength).
How is this EXP gain possible? Can the AI gain EXP from the 3 failed assassination attempts? He had already gained 2 EXP levels through his multitude of catastrophic failures against me on the battlefield, but these last 2 levels were attained through no evident action on the AI's part (and came within 4 seasons!). Anybody familiar with this?
I started admiring his resilience actually and attempted to bribe him... but he wanted 89,000 mnai, so he can die like the rest when I finally catch up to him.

He probably picked up some ancillaries after your assassination attempts which improve the valor of the general's bodyguards (aka experience).

Interesting. I never realized they added to the general's EXP. Thanks for the tip.

i dont think its from the assasination attempts. The AI generals just seem to gain a lot of command stars and management regardless of bad traits. I remember in one of my earlier seleucid campaigns. The Parthian King was sitting outside my city with 3 stars and after 4 turns he had 8 stars. He did not move once

it's bodyguard valor aka experience who make the BG troops monster on the field, with command status as well, it means the bg troops are simply plough to your men...
But anyway, he's Lusotann right? their BG are actually crappy, next time, some lancers would make short work of them, use Illyrians

I have the cav units to slaughter this guy's BG, the problem is that he routs off the battlefield so quickly that I don't have the time to corner him. He's basically a coward that abandons his army, and his unit simply wont stay in melee. I also have to deal with his army in the meantime, which on average is 75% larger than my KH force. If I over commit my cav in an attempt to finish him during the opening of a battle I run the risk of getting them trapped too far from my main infantry battle line, where they'll be swamped by waves of javelin-hurling skirmishers and light spearmen.
His 9 lives are almost up though.

IIRC there are invisible traits for the AI generals, one trait line for generals with command, moral bonuses and such and one line for Governors. They get them quite easily and without doing anything special for it. When outside of settlements they get the command bonuses and in settlements the ones for governors.
But I don't think that explains the high exp bonus. I saw such changes too and I think maybe it has something to do with the regeneration of the BGs, maybe a bug or a weird mechanic like the one when retraining troops with exp.

OH i misread this post i thought u meant command stars not exp. I tend to see this alot. If a general is on enemy territory for a long time, the game sometimes has this bug which gives the generals bodyguard 3 gold chevrons. Ive had it before but after losing a few men the exp bonus is gone. I think for AI it mite stay on
