Just finished my 7th campaign on normal level. I played each clan in turn, but saved Hojo for last. It was a walk in the park. I think I made it to completion by about 1562 or so. I didn't look at the year on my last move, but when I started from my previous save, it was 1555 and I only had about 8 provinces on the mainland and the large island left to conquer. I wonder what the speed record is for the shortest number of years to become Shogun?

Anyway, something interesting happened after I conquered Aki province. There was no fight, so the rebel army retreated leaving 5 men in the castle. After one of two seasons, the castle is down to one man, and I see the message that the castle is well stocked and can hold out for years. I got places to go and things to do, so I drop my 180 man pawn on the castle to end the seige. I don't want to waste the time fighting one man, so I let the computer decide. Well, I get a victory, but at a cost of 84 friggin men! That one Hojo hater must have had Claymore mines rigged up around the castle and an Uzi in each hand.

That late in the game it wasn't very critical, but it certainly was embarassing for the Hojo Clan. Hell, two more like him and I would have gotten a defeat. Cheers!

Don't usually do autoresolve for that reason.

Maybe he had a Chinese repeating crossbow.

Duncan McLeod, perhaps. ;-)

Maybe the castle adds a flat number of soldiers / defense strength bonus for the purposes of auto-resolve? Perhaps there should be a minimum number of troops to effectively hold a castle (ala EiA and the undergarrisoning penalty, for instance); one guy ain't going to be able to make THAT much use of it.

Actually, if the attacker has no ranged arrow weapons, this could be a viable outcome for a battle if the attacking general was really stupid. I mean, a single archer on the top of the wall could tear some ass UP if the enemy strolls up to the gates and starts pounding. You figure at least a couple of minutes to break down the gate, plus the running time...

Even I with my meagre archery skills could wound a hundred or more attackers with ten minutes and a lot of arrows. I'd be pretty exhausted afterwards, but I'd die an honorable death.

HOD:

Brings up a good point: how many arrows does each archer get to fire - anyone know? As I understand each shot is resolved individually.

Bury him with honor, he served and died for his lord and for his code.

So much for tusting the AI!

I believe he was using clamores, Willie Pete and SAWs instead of the Uzis.

He surely used the force :P
Well l got a similar end in a river crossing when l was bored and let the AI fight for me. It was a river map and it was the end of my campain. My 16 unit army around 1000 men wm, no-dadshi and a well-balanced army with 3 armour and 3 weapons improvement and legendary palace morale with a rank 4 daimyo boosting the morale lost to 400 rebel force with ashis and YS and some archers around 400 with 0 and 1 honor without an upgrade! bummer! :P

Don't use only honour, use theforce, too.

just searching something and discoverd this interesting story.

There is only one men left in the castle and he has plenty of food... Hey that's exactly why he made to the survival finale - he didn't vote out the other four, but "convert" his rivals into plenty of food... http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/mad.gif

Greetings,
If you had archers in your army the computer might have assumed that some of them shot each other etc http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Hi,
I had a similar problem in the weekend. I only had one Ashigaru left in this castle so instead of auto resolving I decided to go in with my Daimyo.

After my 4 archer units had unleashed their entire arsenal at one unit and missed! I sent in my Daimyo - 11 HC against one Ash (I was worried)but he won.

But I lost 4 men!!! Now he was not an archer but the computer still killed 4 of my arhcers??? Even though I never used them in hand to hand.

So you can see how many men I would have lost if he was an archer!

I am sure AI does not stand for what I originally thought.

Hi Kiwi: I guess that's friendly kill. It happens when you make your men more than 1 line deep. Somebody twisted his arms when firing, so accidently got the guy before him down. I know it is very humiliating but that's how the game works.

Kiwi, what I would have done is just attacked
the one man ashigaru with my DAIMYO only, no
need to bring in archers. But now you can
appreciate the power of the Ashigarus, ehem !

Live and learn I suppose. With my luck the one Ashigaru would have killed my Daimyo http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Hehe, and with no heirs (worst luck), the
lone Ashigaru would have ended your clan
and campaign http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
