View Full Version : I'm guessing this is not normal

After the discussion of child abuse in the "elephant in the room thread" I found myself alot less affected than I am used to being when thinking on the subject. I dont really remember how or why but I ended up trawling through an encyclopdia dramatica page, (they have a huge collection of gore, scat and barely legal unspeakableness to offend further those who wanted to complain about the site. Trolls have an interesting sense of humor, Edit: after a mistake I'm not going to name it.).
I only found one image hard enough to look at that I actually considered skipping, the rest I looked at and barely so much as raised an eyebrow.
I appear to be almost completely jaded to all internet images considered repulsive that does not include child porn.
Right now the only feeling of repulsion I have is a off feeling I cant really identify.
I'm so off that I dont think I remember why I started writing this thread, I just feel I need to get this out there.

I think it is normal that as you hear more and more terrible things, the shock factor begins to decrease.
I think this is amplified a lot in the modern age. Mass media alerts you to the actions of every lunatic/psychopath etc. Even though Joseph Fritzl lives in Austria, I'm made aware of his actions. I don't doubt there were plenty of Joseph Fritzl's in the past, but unless they were in your local area, you wouldn't hear about them. In fact, it's the only real significant piece of news about modern Austria I've ever heard really. 99.99999% of families there are perfectly normal (relatively speaking), yet his is the only one I hear about.
Then there's the internet, where the anonymity allows people to say things the would never dare to say in real life. I've read some really shocking things on some forums that were the usuall trolls serving a portion of copypasta.
You just grow a thicker skin and become less sensitive to it all.
However I think when you re-enter the world of RL and things happen to people you know, your humanity comes back to you. I heard a story recently about something that happened to one of my cousins, and I just sat there in shock and disbelief for about 10 minutes.

If abuse ever happens to you, then please feel free to comment upon it.
As for the OP. If it doesn't happen you. It doesn't happen.

Oh no. This has been a mistake. I'm sorry, I didnt think this through I shouldnt have so much as mentioned the name of the website.
A year ago I found that and I had the same reaction you did, when I found myself desensatised on the Elephant in the room thread I saught it out to reafirm my feelings and found myself mostly uneffected by the atrocities on that site which got me worried.
I'm so sorry Cent. I'm an idiot who doesn't think things through.

I'm getting the feeling I'm about to be called a horrible human being or something, but 19, AKA still young and stupid.

These things happen. People get desensitized to pictures of violence. Who knows, one day you may see actual violence and still have the same emphatic reaction, or you may not.
Morbid curiosity is part of life. Partly forbidden, partly wonder. It's natural.
Just don't fall off on the deep end like some here and throw away all the beauty of life becuase 1. There is no God, this is all bullshit, none of what we do matters. 2. There is God, he already knows where we are going, this is all bullshit, none of what we do matters. 3. I study at unviersity, my philosophy is right, until we implement we are all headed to doom. 4. I like the way things were, if we change things we are all headed to doom.
After spending allot of time on here I notice people get burnt out and tend to either subscribe to Nhillism or a world veiw that is so far outside the mainstream it could never be implemented, These people take cold comfort in the fact they are still "right" and all others are "wrong"

I read most of the posts in this subforum, and I have never seen a nihilistic post.
Can you provide an example?

Plus One, but as I am four years older than Strike obviously I am infinitely wiser:
You may have just been over-sensitised by the sex ring and the system has shut down to reboot - I had that after I killed a sheep, we killed it, drained it, cut the head and feet off and the heart started beating again. Couldn't stop laughing for at least five minutes while week spurts of blood were expelled from every wound we had made on the animal.
Funniest thing ever - but I don't think I could kill another sheep unless I was really hungry, now.
Strike's also right about the Backroom - we either come here because we're burned out or because we are curious, and then we burn out.
WE all have our little ticks and quirks here - you've seen a previously unaired one of mine this past week.
