I just saw a NOVA docu on the finding of the 5th midget sub that participated in the PH attack on Dec 7. Very interesting watch. Has anyone else seen this one hour documentary?
The authors found the sub, whose fate has been unknown for over 70 years, outside the entrance to PH lying in about 1000ft of water. It was found to be in three sections, with cable attached to each section for some unknown reason. During the course of the docu, the sub was shown to have penetrated the anti-sub nets protecting Pearl, and a photo taken by one of the attacking aircraft shows what appears to be a midget sub firing torps at the WeeVee and Oklahoma. Both torps were gone from the subs two tubes, the only one of the five to have fired its' torps.
It appears to have made its' way into the West Loch after the attack, and scuttled by the two-man crew, who remained entombed with their boat. The cable attachments were thought to be from a clean-up operation in 1944, when some LST's gathering in the West Loch for the Saipan invasion blew up. The whole affair was hush-hush, and the clean-up crew dumped all the wreckage outside the harbor. The midget sub was found amidst all of the wreckage.
Very interesting.....
