Catch a glimpse of Gemini Wars here. (http://www.strategyprime.net/gemini-wars-preview/)
Seems quite promising, a 4X game with focus on tactical combat made by an indie team (couple of brothers plus some occasional assistance on the side). Looking forward to the complete game, that will be out on 8th June. Will be doing a review then. Oh, and a small gameplay video.

It has been a long time since I last played any kind of space game. That looked pretty cool. Hopefully the universe is an interesting one to go with the spiffy graphics.

Be aware of the fact that this game has no "free play" option; the 4X option is condensed into tactical gameplay with a singleplayer campaign. It isn't like Master of Orion or Galactic Civilization, but it seems promising. It is something of a mixture between Master of Orion and old Starcraft, but still more than, say, the good old Star Trek: Armada. Basically, it is all in the tactical gameplay as your go your way through the missions.
This is again an iPad game?

PC and Mac only.
Would have been too good to be true. Having massive fun with War Academy and Aventum by the way, if it wasn't for you I wouldn't have heard of them
edit, oh a tip, you might want to look into 'Hunters'

Glad I was of any assistance. Could you link me the "Hunters"?
You will find it in the app-store, it's a top down TBS, it looks fantastic and plays really nice. Pretty sure you will like it.

I don't see how people can call a space combat game 'tactical' if it doesn't allow combat in three dimensions.
Yet every modern 'space combat' game refuses to acknowledge the most interesting thing about combat in space. In fact, this and Sins and Sword begin to look the same, combat wise.
Oh well, back to yearning for a modern Homeworld.
CR
Homeworld was and is awesome, Gardens of Kardesh remains one of the best game moments ever.

Simple enough, there is a difference between categories "strategy" and "tactics" on one side and 3 dimension combat on the other side.
I wouldn't denounce the game of its entire strategic and/or tactical value just because it ignores the third dimension.
That aside, I too would love to see a new version of Homeworld with functional 3D space combat.
