EKKLESIA

The year is 424 B.C, and the Peloponnesian War has dragged on for 8 long years. Perikles, for so long Athens' elder statesman, is dead. Following her success at Pylos the year before, Athens is feeling confident about her chances of winning the war and grinding the faces of Sparta and her allies into the ground.

However, as the expedition into Boeotia was making its preparations to depart, little evidences of an oligarchic plot began to emerge. A fire, apparently deliberately lit, destroyed 5 of the city's triremes beached at the Piraeus. Rumours filtered in that some of Athens' allies were secretly preparing to revolt once the the democracy had been destroyed. The next day, the sacred image of Athena Polias herself was found desecrated in the Parthenon.

As rage swelled across the city, a meeting of the Ekklesia (citizen-assembly) was hastily called...

:drama3:

**********************************************************************

Welcome to Ekklesia, a Classical Greek themed mafia game. In this game, the town (Ekklesia) attempt to root out the small group of oligarchic plotters in their midst. The Ekklesia itself is divided into those with broadly oligarchic leanings and those who are democratically minded. Both, however, prefer the status quo than the uncertainties of regime change. The conspirators will be chosen at random from amongst those players whose characters have oligarchic leanings. Ostracism will be included, although I'm still ironing the rules out. The game will be similar to my previous game, Asterix, which was itself based on TinCow's classic, Rubicon, which he has kindly given me permission to adapt again.

I will need at least 31 players, but 35 is also doable.

Game Phases and Basic Gameplay:
Once signups have closed each player will be randomly assigned a role, the role PM explaining the particulars will be sent to them, and shortly thereafter, play will commence.

The usual sequence of 24-hour days and 24-hour nights will be followed. Day and Night phases may be extended where necessary to account for outside events/unusual situations. In no instance will the time period be decreased below 24 hours. The first phase of the game will be a Night phase.

Day Phase: Each day the Ekklesia (town) will vote to prosecute (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heliaia) (lynch) one living player. Each citizen can cast one vote (see below for procedure). Ignoramus will write up the results of these votes and post them for general consumption, along with any juicy particulars about the prosecutions. The game then proceeds to the next night phase.

Prytaneis: (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prytaneis)
Also during each day phase, two new players will be randomly chosen as the new prytaneis. The new pryraneis will be notified by PM of their appointment, and can choose to reveal or conceal their new role as they see fit. In game terms, the pryraneis will have the use of a bodyguard during the night phase, which will require a double attack to kill them.

Night Phase: Every role has something to do at night – even if your choice is to do nothing. Since every role can be active in some manner, all players should PM Ignoramus (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/member.php?10336-Ignoramus) during each night phase to indicate their actions. I will respond as quickly as possible, and will write up results that take effect immediately prior to the next day phase.

Actions: All roles will have actions or abilities that can be used at certain times during the game. These will be listed in your role PM. No player may use more than one night action in any single Night Phase, even if more than one kind of night action is listed in the role PM. You must pick which kind of night action you want to use each night from those available to you. If you are submitting an order to kill or protect someone, feel free to provide whatever level of detail you wish. Within the constraints of playability I will endeavour to create write-ups that conform to your requests, but reserve the right to edit them if necessary for game play purposes.

PM Example:

"Night 3: On this night, working with Askthepizzaguy and Csargo, I wish to protect robbiecon."

If your night action requires multiple people and one of the partners in your group fails to PM me, or should they PM me with different instructions (accidentally or on purpose), you group may not have the requisite numbers to perform a given night action successfully. The write up will indicate that failure, but will not reveal who was to blame for the failure.

Voting:
Voting Procedure:
Every living player may vote to execute one citizen during each Political Phase.

To execute (lynch) a player, the proper procedure is:

Vote: INSERT NAME HERE - To vote for the death of a living player
Vote: Abstain - To indicate you do not want to vote for anyone some reason.

To be counted, a vote MUST be posted in bold typeface using the following format:

Vote: Ignoramus

To change a vote, you must first unvote in the following manner:

Unvote: Ignoramus
Vote: Askthepizzaguy

If you do not wish to vote for anyone, but still want to register as active, you may abstain in the following manner:
Vote: Abstain

Ostracism: (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ostracism)
Instead of voting for a lynch, a player may call for an ostracism. If ostracism gains the majority of votes, the round will end without a lynching. Instead, a new voting period of 24 hours will be held in which players will PM the gamemaster (Ignoramus) with their vote of who they wish to ostracise. The player with the most number of votes will be ostracised - he will be exiled from Athens for 2 turns. In game terms, this means he cannot be killed, nor can he be lynched, but neither can he vote nor carry out most night actions. If the game ends while a character is in exile, he will lose.

To vote for an ostracism you must post the following:
Vote: Ostracism

Voting Inactivity:
The Athenians under the radical democracy regarded attendance at the Ekklesia as a civic duty, and looked poorly on those citizens who were not involved in the decision-making of the city.

Voting each day phase is mandatory unless your character is not in the city of Athens itself. Failure to vote will result in a warning and a additional vote against you for the next lynching phased. Failure to vote a second time will see you lose your rights as a citizen and you will be put to death (eliminated from the game). If eliminated in this way, you will be unable to comment or post in the thread (unlike those who are killed in other ways).

If you are unable to continue participating in the game due to real life, then please contact me, and I'll see if I can find a replacement player for you - regardless of the nature of your role in the game.

Rules pertaining to gameplay by dead players, screenshots, etc.:
The dead may post in the public thread, but cannot vote or carry out any actions. Dead players may not reveal their roles publicly or privately. Dead players may not quote from a PM unless that PM has been posted in the public thread by a living player. Dead players may not reveal, recount or allude to their previous night or day actions (or results thereof in the case of investigations) publicly or privately – even to confirm a previously made public or private reveal. Dead players may not communicate about the game in any manner outside of the game thread.

No screenshots of anything related to the game may be used, from or to anyone, for ANY purpose – this includes during PMs. You may, however, quote ANY PART of ANY PM that I send you, including role PMs and action result PMs. You may also fabricate role PMs and action result PMs as you see fit.

"Suicide" will only be allowed for players who are unable to continue playing for real life reasons. But please let me not ASAP, so I can try and organise a replacement, regardless of your role. If you need to remove yourself from the game, please send me a PM and I will write you out of play in a suitably amusing and/or embarassing manner.

It is VERY STRONGLY suggested that all players enable “invisible” mode so that technology is not used to trap you. If you remain visible while on the Org boards, your activity can be logged and compared against a normal profile providing clues as to your role, working partners, etc.

Hello Ignoramus. I am interested - can we hear a bit more about the rules? How does ostracism work? Is there a link to another similar?

Ostracism will be similar to No Lynch or Abstain, except that it means you can sideline a player from voting and most night actions for a couple of turns. Basically if a majority of votes call for an ostracism, a separate vote is held, in which the player with the most votes is ostracised.

I like it - announce it in the Frontroom, because the Mafia community this year is rather diminished. Or perhaps the EB fora.

Ooh, this looks juicy. Haven't played Mafia in over a year, but I've been feeling the urge lately, and Diablo 3 turned out to be a disappointment. By my estimates, this game should wrap up just in time for football season, so put me IN, coach! I'm always down for a good conspiracy.

Second that...a lot of regulars have been missing since the end of Capo.

Guys, really sorry about this, but I may need to hold the game over for a month or two until I have more time. I'm about to start a winter intensive at uni(something I hadn't envisaged a couple of weeks ago), and now don't think I'll be able to have the time to manage all the PM's and night actions a game like this would require.

If someone would like to swap my position with a later date, I'd be really appreciative.

Just to reiterate: The Game is NOT dead, but I need to put it off until I have enough time to do it justice. I don't want a repeat of my last large mafia game, where I ended up getting swamped and having to close the game half-way through.

My deepest apologies,
Ignoramus.
