I ain't even mad.
“I think it's great, they should have given him a medal for what he did, defending his daughter,” said Leroy Wagner (https://forums.totalwar.org/?controllerName=search&action=search&channel=news%2Fstate&search=1&inlineLink=1&query=%22Leroy+Wagner%22), 79, a retired Alcoa worker who was drinking Shiner beer on tap with friends. “Who wouldn't have done that?”
“He was being a responsible father, any responsible father would have done the same thing,” said Joe Marek (https://forums.totalwar.org/?controllerName=search&action=search&channel=news%2Fstate&search=1&inlineLink=1&query=%22Joe+Marek%22), 59, a local electrician.
Victor Casper (https://forums.totalwar.org/?controllerName=search&action=search&channel=news%2Fstate&search=1&inlineLink=1&query=%22Victor+Casper%22), 65, a retired county worker, said, “If it was my kids, I would have done the same thing. I would have defended them, too.”

I have a lot of bad stuff to say about the american "justice". This case is not one of them.

I don't have a problem with this ruling
Has there been any controversy around this case at all?

No, but a bunch of people want some pipsqueak libreal to pipe up
JUST SO HE CAN BE SMASHED DOWN WITH THE FULL WIEGHT OF TEXAS
Glad to see there is still justice.
As an amusing aside, the article mentions use of lethal force. The man managed to do the whole thing with just his fists though, didn't need any 'lethal force'.

If he'd popped out, bought a gun and shot him in the back of the head I'd still not think he should be convicted.

He was protecting his daughter from a rapist - check
He showed remorse for killing him - check
He didn't mean to kill him - check.
I see no problem here.

What if I meant to kill him and didn't show remorse? He was, after all, raping my daughter. After we let him into our country to work. After I was nice enough to hire him.
Then I tell the Grand Jury
"I know violence is not the answer
I GOT IT WRONG ON PURPOSE"

Then you'd probably still get off - but I would be worried about you killing again when provoked, and so would others in society.

LOL it's all a joke, I was joking.
I would never hire a Mexican national.
I prefer former Carnies as ranch hands
Because I like El Caminos
I doubt he would get convicted here either, best of luck to the guy and his daughter

This was not defense, unless the so-called rapist (is there any real proof - witnesses?) continued in the act after being discovered and the father had to fight him off of her. Defense would have been separating the two and guarding the girl until the police arrived. This was bloodlust that resulted in murder - something we usually hold trials over.

His twelve peers would have to all find him guilty. If the police have done their job and found corroborating witnesses that the father attacked a man who raped his five year old daughter. If the witness accounts are correct the rapist still had his pants around his ankles.
So take that evidence to a prosecuter and get him to weigh up the chances of convicting the dad.
Then a judge and be careful that he doesn't see it as some sort of malicious prosecution or a waste of time.
Then try and find a jury who would unanimously convict the father.
It would be a waste of time and taxpayer money.
