PC game from, I'd guess, 5-10 years ago. I think it was about the German paratroopers in Crete in 1941. Mostly operational level of command (down to the company level?), NATO symbols, very clean 2d graphics. No tiles/hexes/grids as far as I can recall. I think it was also pausable real-time.
I remember bouncing off this game at the time and want to try it again, but it has so far eluded my best google-fu. Any ideas?
Edit: also, I think it was part of a series.
Well, there was the Commandos series (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commandos_%28video_game%29), but it was about British commandos. I'm pretty certain though it had a few missions set in Crete.

Nope, because I remember Commandos very well! The one I'm looking for is a lot more 'serious' and realistic. I mean, it's just NATO symbols moving on a map (literally a map).
Maybe this one then: Conquest of the Aegean http://cota.matrixgames.com/

Yes, that was it! Thank you!
I shall report back here if I have interesting experiences with this.

HIDDEN AND DANGEROUS !!!!! (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xYgAQCQCTc)
You're looking for the Deluxe version which includes "Devils Bridge". It has a Greek campaign, but is about the Britosh SAS. Or maybe that was Hidden and Dangerous 2? (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQ_Zxhy3wQ8&feature=related)
2 of my favorite games of all time
