Hi again all.

My current question is:

Are there friendly fire kills in STW?

Two recent battles have left me wondering.

Battle 1...
my 4 groups of cav archers targetting enemy groups (44Ashigari, 20ish YS). My cav archers stood off and fired at the enemy. Enemy lost 3 men... I LOST FIVE!?!?!?

Battle 2...

Siege of a castle. I sent 5 groups (60ea) of SA up near the walls to send vollies of arrows over. After a few minutes, I'd noticed that I'd lost about 15 guys. The castle defenders were all YS..no archers.
Are these friendly fire kills, or does a castle automatically get ranged kills?

Thanks..

you can kill your own men with missile weapons, but not swords and polearms. You just have to be very carful where you're pointing your bows and guns.

Hey there,

Yes your archers make friendly fire, even on their own unit itself. Put the archers in rows of 2/3 men deep for trying to avoid this.

Guns don't seem to suffer much friendly fire as archers. (maybe a bug)

Bizarre. I would have thought there is a greater chance of a gun backfiring. Perhaps the archer's friendly fire is men accidentally releasing the arrow into their comrade's backside.

a gun would kill men nearest to them, so it is the 'magik bullet' bug

archer fire is most effective in 2 ranks deep or 3 if in close formation
Put them any deeper and the men at the rear will have a reduced line of sight penalty and the chances of them hitting a comrade are then greatly increased.
When deploying archers on a hill sloping up be very careful as the men at the back will almost certainly kill several of the front line, try to position archers on ground sloping downwards or level at their feet and in shallow formations to minimize friendly kills and maximise enemy kills

Just something to add: the AI makes friendly kills as well. I remember I've tried to assault a castle, while half of the YS blocking the gate was killed by their comrades! http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif (The weather was like heavy rain and windy, though)
