Am I the only one missing an update of the org ? I'd especially love to read some more in the strategy-section. I read somewhere that you were working on it ?

Now I know it's hard work, and you guys have to have the time for it, but it would sure be great.

Maybe this game is getting a little too old to have that sizzling web-life that many games enjoy in the start, but I think we have a loyal following here, and there might be a sequel to keep it all alive http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/cool.gif

Not wanting to seem a shinobi here, if you want strategies try;

Shogun Totalwar Hints and Strategies www.geocities.com/totalwarshogun (http://www.geocities.com/totalwarshogun)

at least until the org is updated http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

Thanks for the tips, but there is nothing on the web that I haven't allready read.

That site you mention is excellent though, a great and recommendable read. I don't agree that Uesugi should give op Shinano though, as the strategi reccomends, but then again - I don't play on hard...

I am working on a site of my own, to be opened to the general public within a few days. It will include some strategy guides. Though it would be nice if the ORG had some more content. Perhaps it could host other Shogun sites, something common in the Quake/HalfLife/FPS communities?

11-16-2000, 03:49
d'oh, are you suggesting that we should get to the lowly level of something like quake ???

Well, they must be doing something right. I think Quake has more than 25000 players! http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Well, since I've been doing a site for this game, I think I know why there hasn't been much in the way of updates in the STW community.
First off, we have no mods. Aside from a few maps that Tosa Inu made, we're lacking for original content.
Second we have no tools for making mods for this game.
Third, the developers don't keep in touch with the fan sites. This is the only forum, besides the official one, that you'll ever find a single posting from Richie, the Q/A / WebMaster for STW at CA/DT/EA.
Third, We're patiently biding our time until the next upgrade/patch/add-on - so most of the stuff that might constitute as content is usually posted in the forums - and being that it's public knowledge within a day or two due to these postings - unless it's gospel - it's usually not posted anywhere but in these Forums.
The web-hosting idea would have been a good idea - about 4 0r 5 months ago, but now everyone who has a site for STW is doing their own thing - plus we'd all have been SOL if we got caught with our pants down when the Org got stuck on that last webserver.
Currently I count no more than 6 ACTIVE sites for STW. 90% of the other "STW Sites" are clan sites that were erected and forgotten by their masters - or just serve as a stop off before their private forums. Check around and you'll see that MOST of these sites haven't seen an update in 3-6 months.
The sites that are running and growing are listed here: the Org, PlanetTotalWar.com, Erado-San's STW Tech/Resources, STW Strategies and Hints, Terazawa Tokugawa's Resource Center for STW, Shogun Zone, The Fearful Ways Clan site, and maybe a few others that are in different languages - (sorry if I missed someone's site that is actually active - these are the only ones I know of that are English lang. STW News and Information sites that have posted anything new or relevant to the STW Community in the past month)
I'm sure things will get more active once the developers DEVELOP some more goodies or add-ons for this game. As it is, truthfully, a lot of people have played it through, and moved on to other games. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/frown.gif

So, if you look at all these sites - hopefully you'll find all there is to know or download for this game. If you need more - write to Richie and CA/DT and tell them you need a bigger fix. Tell them that you need more game, tools for making mods, or whatever else they can pull out of the hat.

Good Luck!

Fair points, all of them, but hope is not lost. With a sequel/add-on pack on the way, there may be a resurgence of interest as new players get involved and those who have played the game before pick it back up again.

As far as map creation goes, I have just started work on a map editor (there's a thread on it in the Editing/Mods/Patches forum). Modifying the unit graphics should be possible with any graphics package that can edit/convert to the formats that the existing unit graphics are in (TGA and LBM I think).

As for STW sites, I'm working on one of my own, to be posted up soon. It will include new strategy guides and anything else I can think of to write. Hopefully you will be able to download the map editor from there when it's finished http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

The STW community can continue and even grow, if we support it and the developers come up with new stuff to entice people in. Mods would be good, an add-on pack (with publicity) would be even better. STW is streets ahead of Age of Empires, it's just taking a while for people to notice.

IMO Romans : Total War (or whatever it will be) should launch this game on to a new level.

Here's hoping! http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

I think Totalwar.org could boost visitor hits simply by changing their slogan from The Unofficial Shogun Totalwar Site to something a little more dangerous like The Unauthorized Shogun Totalwar Site.
I'm sure there are those who have even snappier ideas...

Rob that sounds very interesting - looking forward to seeing your new site.

I agree that there is a lot of stuff posted on the forum, and a lot of it is truly usefull.

And looking forvard to more from the developers. They apparently haven't grasped the fact, that a good online community greatly increases a games lifespan. Their loss is our ... loss. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/frown.gif

Finally Rob - your location is simply distastefull - get outta my ass http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif

IMO the main reason for the lack of traffic in STW websites is due to the game. While there are a few people who will disagree, most people feel that the single player game has very little replay value. After youve played it 3 or 4 times, it is not only boring, but down right tedious. Starting out is fun. Sometimes you lose. But if you can manage to capture about 1/4 of japan, game is over. Now all there is left is to wipe through whoever is lef and win. whoopty friggin doo. And the computer A1, contrary to offical statements, sucks. I decided to try a single player game the other night. I was playing on hard. I had 3 units of archers and 2 units of YS. The computer had 3 units of archers and 5 units of YS. Pretty obvious who should win. But no. The computer kept the archers in the back so they werent firing. The YS walked up to my front lines, then stopped and stood there while my archers shot them to pieces at point blank. Oh yeah, this was after the troops had run from one side of the map to the other. Yeah, wow, what fun.

The only thing that has some replay value is the online gaming. However, log on after 12 am EST and try to find a game. Especially try to find a 2v2 or a 3v3. you cant. theres only 10 people logged on world wide.

Usually I try to not think about it, but what a waste this game is. I mean, dont get me wrong, I still play it everyday. But this game was gonna be revolutionary. This should have been the game of the year. But horrible managment has turned it into a game that many people have played but only the die-hards have stuck around. What a shame. http://members.tripod.com/smilecwm/cgi-bin/s/net5/wzbigcry.gif

Well, I agree with you there FearedSangsara, there's a LOT that hasn't been done to keep this game's community strong from the other side of the fence. We've all done our part - we put up great sites, hosted events, particiapted in community events, offered our services for testing beta patches, educated newbies, done the tech support FOR EA, etc. etc...Now we're faced with the possibility of either getting an add-on or having to stick it out until they are done with their new project - which I must add - might not have anything to do with this game.
I'm usually a hopeful person, and thus far have been about as patient as one can be - but the lack of word on anything other than a patch that fixes a few bugs is a bit unnerving.
I've just completed my 12th Campaign. Nothing new to report other than - 100% Christian provinces stay loyal - even without garrisons. Whoopie do! I read that somewhere way back, and up until yesterday never tried playing with "Christian" Daimyos. Never-the-less - I was rather let down with the last 1/2 of my campaign. Nothing new happened, noone visited me, hell I didn't even have to make Geisha or Ninjas to help the cause. Bah!

Here we go again! http://cgi.tripod.com/smilecwm/cgi-bin/s/icw/029.gif

We all get frustrated because we know what the potential of this game is. It's only been two weeks since question time 2 ended. We have not yet heard back from CA/DT on it, but today they have posted a rough feature list for 1.13 which they hope to have out by the end of November (yes folks, that's right.....TWO WEEKS! http://members.tripod.com/smilecwm/cgi-bin/s/net6/moon.gif ). What I want is version 2.0 which would implement the major changes to the diplomatic model, re-worked christianity, re-vamped tactical AI, and the modifications we have discussed regarding castles.

Sang and Daimyo are right, there is little replay value in the campaign as it stands right now (poor Soly, it was good knowin ya!). We have made several suggestions to the development team regarding increasing the replayability (?) of the campaign and we continue to come up with new ideas and variations on themes (see above along with several active threads). What we need to see is more action from the other side of the fence. I know that Richie is completely submerged with his responsibilities as is....so get someone else in there as point man who will be able to take an active (if not leading) role in working with the online community! Let's see the same commitment to this game from the developers as we do from the community!

I've rambled more than my fair share, so I'm gonna stop now!

I know a few people have said this before, but new maps and mods are the way to go. This means that the mapping/mod people need support from the rest of the community. How about featuring new maps at totalwar.org? (I presume totalwar.com will never do this.) The STW community has a growing number of mappers and this should be featured more heavily here.

Heya Rob,

I've already posted a few of those maps at my site, and will post up the others as soon as i play them. I've also made available the Demo maps and other goodies at my site. Feel free to send me whatever you guys come up with. I'm a stickler for testing things first though, so don't always expect it to be up and available right away.
I'm all for the mod community, it's what I live for when it comes to games, be it here or with Rogue Spear, SWAT 3, UT, etc...etc...Just keep 'em coming. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif
