Catholic bishop convicted of covering up child abuse (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/9350689/Monsignor-William-Lynn-becomes-first-US-priest-convicted-for-abuse-cover-up.html) in the US.

This is the proper way to deal with this issue. I'm happy tonight. One can only hope this case leads to several more.

I think HoreTore actually means he would like to see more convictions of those who are already guilty so they are brought to justice, the fact they are part of the catholic church should not give them immunity. I think you misread the intentions of the post if you meant he would actually want to see more dreadful acts.

Do you have anything to do besides post on an internet forum and have an inflated opinion of yourself?

Despite being Catholic this disgusts me as much as it does everyone else. It enrages me because it is so unethical and evil. In a way the child molestation bothers me less because I know that priests are not and never will be infllible and disgusting pieces of crap will always find a way in like any other profession. What disgusts me on a deeper level is that people will allow them to get away with it ala Joe Paterno sinc I can never imagine doing that even for the closest of friends or family.

I've been reading the bishops accountability (http://bishopaccountability.org/) website.

They have a section called "Files of the Bishops", where you can read internal documents of the church, discussing priests under suspicion of child abuse.

Quite disturbing stuff.

And I also dream of the day when other faiths come under the same scrutiny as the catholic church. I'm quite sure they're not alone, I bet you'll find much of the same with the lutherans, jews, muslims, etc.

 That is a completely asinine line of thought. Do you think every German citizen should have been put on trial for their leaders actions in WW2? Should you be put to death for the atrocities that the dutch visited upon the natives of the Congo and Indonesia since you were a member of the same nation as those men? Should you be denigrated and stand before a court for your soldiers actions at Srebrenica? They are also citizens of the Netherlands?

Other religions are more tolerant of allowing priests to marry.

The Catholic Church clearly places the whole edifice as dictated by Go whereas some other religions do not place the edifice in such high regard. Repeated hiding the fact is almost as bad as doing it. They are off to hell, I think we should expidite the journey.

That's true, and you can make a case that this will cause more sexual abuse in the catholic church.

When it comes to covering it up, however, the other religions have the same reasons for doing it as the catholics. It's fair to assume that abuse has taken place in other religions as well, and so it's a fair assumption that they have also covered it up.

I have no respect for them there's a difference. About Sebrenica, feel free examine it it's much more complicated then you think. Dutch troops certainly weren't all that eager but there was a reason for that. Maybe Brenus can fill you in on things he was there.

Maybe the church will reconsider some of the inappropriate alter boy outfits they have these boys wear. If you consider both sides of the story, some might argue that the victims were asking for it. The best outfit I think for alter boys to wear in the future in order to turn-off priests from assaulting them is perhaps something that makes the boy look like a female.

I like the story of how there is a "rise" in dancing boys. That crap has been going on over there for so long, hidden behind closed doors, I would imagine the child sexual abuse over there is an absolute pandemic, we just don't ever hear about it because it is a closed society and they have differing definitions of immoral behavior, i.e. the guys who rape the boys don't consider themselves homosexuals. This gives me a good idea for a depressing thread

It is not uncommon for an ANP, ANA, ABP or AUP compound to have, amongst its contigency of guards and civil servant, uniformed teenage boys who do not carry weapons and serve as handmaidens of sorts, cleaning weapons and serving chai.

We called them chai boys. They were typically teenage boys with fair skin, feminine features and small statures. Many of them wore eye liner and had painted fingernails. Rumor was that most of them used to be dancing boys. Rumor also had it that young men who were not fit for duty but wanted to join the force (or perhaps were singled out as being pretty) were basically put in a quid pro quo situation where the only way they could join "the force" was to service those in charge and prove their worth.

The ANP chief in the Sayeed Kareem district of Paktya said that his predecessor would allow his officers younger brothers to join the team after bringing the boys to a party and gang raping them. We were talking about this because he was pointing out some of his less effective, problem soldiers, and he explained that they were former chai boys and he could not bring himself to fire them because they had no where else to go, so he used them as second line defenses in district centers.

Low, he moves from reasonable to baiting, and it took fifteen posts!

Kudos, remarkable restraint.

Now, learn some theology:

All Sin is equal in the eyes of God, and the Roman Church teaches that is is sinful for priests who have taken a vow of celibacy to engage in sexual relations. That's it, end of statement. The position has since been nuanced but until quite recently masturbation, consensual sex with a woman you love, homosexuality, and child rape were not properly differentiated in the confessional.

When all sexual desire becomes illicit, then all sexual acts are taboo and breaking one taboo is the same as breaking all of them.

The solution is allowing priests to marry, and if you don't agree with homosexuality you then CANNOT allow homosexuals to become priests.

You know what, you're right!

http://nehandaradio.com/2011/12/09/anglican-priest-convicted-of-raping-13-year-old/

Look how bad the Africans are at covering these things up!

They're giving the Anglican Illuminati a bad name!

It took less than 60 seconds to find that.

Want to bet I can dig up the last few cases in the UK where the priest was caught, and not 20 years later?

This problem exists in ALL "respected" professions, including education. The current strenuous efforts to keep covering it up are, however, peculiar to one Church.

Are you sure that's doctrine? Sounds wonky to me.

So if I'm rude to my mom, that's exactly as sinful to God as if ethnically cleanse an entire nation?

Or if I take the Lord's name in vain after hitting my head, that's exactly as bad in God's eyes as if I create a rape camp?

Yes

People get confused because of Purgatory, but that's just punishment - eventually you get into heaven, it's a forgone conclusion.

Sin is disobedience to God - all Sin, any Sin, sends you straight to Hell unless you repent.

Christianity is a harsh religion.

MRD's question is apt, because such issues have been raised.

The answer, FYI, is probably Thursday for Catholics and Saturday or really early Sunday morning for Protestants.

They seem to have been forgotten in the media coverage though.
