For defragging, follow these instructions (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/improve-performance-by-defragmenting-your-hard-disk).

I generally discourage friends and family from messing with the Registry. (It's kinda like being a Jedi: you can do a lot of good, but you can also very easily fall to the dark side.)

I seem to remember Whacker having some registry-fu programs he liked. Am I correct? Personally, I won't touch the things, but YMMV.

CCleaner (http://www.piriform.com/CCLEANER)
Defraggler (http://www.piriform.com/defraggler)

For manual tweaking, there is always hijackthis, but stay far away from it if you have no clue what you are doing.
HijackThis (http://sourceforge.net/projects/hjt/)

But I believe you are just after the first two. CCleaner cleans the junk, gunk and all that other stuff. Defraggler is best free defragger I know of, and is superior to many solutions such as Norton.

CCleaner is wonderful, love it and use it often. Never had any problems with it, just make SURE you only use the options you WANT to use! If you tell it to, it'll blow away all of your Firefox settings, cookies, etc.

I personally prefer Auslogics Defrag, it's freeware, lightweight, and works great. I've also used Defraggler and JKDefrag in the past, my preference remains Auslogics.

I used to use auslogics, but they started to creep in heavily with its boostspeed paidware. "Boostspeed" whilst good, isn't worth it especially when there is CCleaner and Defraggler for free, plus the name makes it sound like spyware or a trojan.

Thank you. I actually initially got boostspeed from you! Lovely little program but alas, it costs money now.

Yes. I remember recommending it once and some one tried to get me to run anti-trojan software due to the name of it. :laugh4:

Another vote for CCleaner and Defraggler

Lightweight, easy to install; easy to use. Piriform really ought to be commended for publishing such excellent free tools.
