Steam?

I already have Rome and Medieval II on disc that I have been using without something called Steam?

I want to now buy Empire and Napoleon on disc but keep reading that you need Steam? What does this mean and can you play the disc without Steam?

You need to download steam in order to play the game. It is a pain though.
