View Full Version : New Broken Crescent game
Hi there, I was thinking of starting this game as well. I have BC 2.3 and I took a look. Ok so if nothing else this will be a totally different experince and fun, if not really that balanced. There's a ton of factions and a huge map. The starting positions vary greatly, but there is room for diplomacy.
The Romans start at -50 000 debt which strikes me as very odd and imbalanced when everyone else has between 10 and 20 k. Most factions have some elite killer units with north of 30 armour, some start with trebs, some don't. It seems interesting. The buildings are expensive, so is the upkeep of armies, which means that early on you will have to plan and choose carefully between civil development or a military campaign.
There are big factions but they start surrounded by several smaller ones who can bite chunks off their borders especially if coordinated. Overall, it's new, different and fun. Who's in?

I think you need version 2.3.2 and a hotfix. Both are available here http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=520801 Oops! Too small!
Here's 2.3 which you need first. http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=448564
Two main files or a torrent to choose from.
I'll claim Armenia for now.

I think recruitment zones are very restricted in 2.3. Might be worth looking into before you start.

Romans start off with debt because if they start off with normal amounts of money, generally they can just outproduce and screw over the Turks. Also it might be historical, can't remember.

I think this is true also. 1.5, 1.5!

If anyone wants to play version 1.05 instead I'd be happy to torrent it for you guys to download
Monkey can you give a summary of the differences between the current version and 1.5? From what I gather from the forums this one should be more balanced?

Depends what you mean by 'balanced' I guess, and whether you think hotseat starting positions should be 'balanced'. If you play with fought battles there will be more of a level playing field. Whichever version you play, if it's AR then the Romans, Crusaders, Kypchaks and Rajputs will rule.
I have only limited experience of versions post 1.05 because I so disliked the changes they brought in with version 2.
The major problem for me is the very restrictive AOR (area of recruitment) which meant faction-specific units could only be recruited in a very small number of starting provinces. Just not fun in my opinion, it means if you lose your starting provinces you can only recruit crappy generic troops and have no chance of fighting back.
Maybe Visorslash can fill in the gaps, he's probably played more BC hotseats in late versions than me.

alright thats cool im up for this i really can see this game being fun and enjoyable. was best to do the 2.02 or the 1.5 version. i only did the 2.3 version once and im pretty sure u didnt have an option to build forts. was just a few permanent ones so thats stupid. back in the days on the other forums we did game the 2.02 version a lot and i really liked this. the 1.5 version i only did with the original wotk so im somewhat clueless what the 1.5 version is really about. i favor the 2.02 version. if there aint any other option to download the 2.02 version i still have the 2.02 files. if we use the same rules as for cog we good. i already picture some good moments with this game. the whole scenario is unique and special. and generally i think of broken crescent as more advanced. stainless steel is alright but broken crescent is strategically more complex
aw yea i ll go with ghazni. never did them

OK so who will post the files up for downloading? I'm going to Hungary tomorrow and will be back at the end of the week, but I'd like us to have this up and running for September.

Which files do you want?
BC1.0 is still hosted here (http://www.4players.de/4players.php/download_start/PC-CDROM/Download/47273.html) (just click 'download starten')
and I've attached the 1.05 patch for you in this post
IF it's 2.0 you're after it's here (http://www.4players.de/4players.php/download_info/Downloads/Download/52518/Medieval_2_Total_War/Broken_Crescent_v20.html)
and the 2.02 patch is also in this post
Excellent Phonics! Will you be joining this one? I figure with you and Silver in it that'd be a great game. Can you get some of the other vets to come back, like Pizza or GH?

Version 2.02 requires the M2TW disc to play, not Kingdoms. Because mine is in storage and not accessible so I won't be able to play.

I can't join at this stage, sorry guys. Maybe I'll take over a faction later when someone leaves or something.

Actually, mine too! the perfect excuse

So, 92 is the new "few"? :laugh4: That's how many forts I count in the file. I lost track a few times and had to recount so I may be off somewhat.
Yes, 2.3 uses Kingdoms not the original M2TW.
We are planning on lead battles so not being able to make forts ruins the game alltogether. So what now? Which version can you guys play that has both forts and is ready for Kingdoms?
Do we get a way to mod forts back into the latest version?

The second question is answerable. Forts can be made buildable if its that important. A simple one word edit of the descr_campaign_db.xml file will do it. Change can_build_forts bool="false" to "true" I'll test it and report back.
Have you seen the movement points used here? Most cities in western half of map can be reached in one turn. Forts can be easily bypassed.
edit: it worked. Forts are 500 cost and permanent. Don't know what they look like on battlemap-could be stone or wood.(probably stone the way the file reads.
You can bypass forts but fort-blocking a siege or chokepoints is crucial in LB hotseats. Thank you very much for the help with this. So shall we try the latest version with a slight change that allows forts to be built?

i dont really have an idea whats that with the forts but if theres a way to have em in 2.3 alright im good with that. tho u had to set this up for me then. right now we just 5 people but i think thats alright. with the big map and the enormous speed of troops i can see massive empires and big clashes in this game and i like that. i think that would be fun. if its 2.3 then i gotta check for the starting positions again tho
Great! What about the rest of you guys?

For SilverShield and anybody else uncomfortable with modding the file, I've attached mine. Just unzip it to Broken_Cresent_kingdoms after you've installed 2.3 (and as we should use 2.3.2 and the hotfix I posted earlier) and click "yes" when you are asked if you want to overwrite files.
Make certain this is the last file you install or it will be over written. Test it by playing single player (not Romans as they're in debt) and you should be able to build on the first turn.
What about the recruitment zones that phonics and Visor mentioned? Can we disable them or make them less restrictive? Good job by the way!

I've been looking at the edb file this morning and, unfortunately, it appears every unit is controlled by a hidden resource and/or an event counter. The file is over 11,000 lines of code and it looks like 25% of those would have to be edited. The term hidden_resource appears 6600 times. At two times per unit.
The only other way would be to try and install and edb from an earlier version but that would have it's own problems. Any differences between versions could cause crashes.
AOR recruiting adds an element of logistics to a game. You have to keep recruiting and moving units to the front lines as much as possible if you can't live with the crappier units. Disclaimer, I haven't played past 20 turns in any game of Broken Cresent so that's only an opinion and not based on seeing how it works in this mod.

yea i actually think this recruitment thing in broken crescen it good. i think this adds some more challenge and strategic impetus to the game. somewhat tomorrow i ll install the 2.3 version and see whether i can get this fort thing up. my preference is still on ghazi but i gotta check the starting positions again. not sure whether theres something new to the unit roster in 2.3

alright took a lotta effort and about an hour and some anger but its all good now. 2.3.2 is up and i can even build forts. how about that huh. good job there with the forts
so yea i ll go with ghazni. man its cool to have broken crescent up and running again. i like that broken crescent is back. its one of a kind. all those unique exotic units. and i see the changes on the map and i really can imagine this game being great. the seljuks lost a lotta territories so the smaller factions now really have a chance in this game. u can expand into lots of territories. egypt also is weaker than it was so i think the game really is more balanced now. so yea i believe this game will be great
What's it like on the battle map? Do HA armies still stomp anyting with good micromanagement? Or do armoured units like knights and ghulams shrug arrows off? Are the Crusaders worth it?
I'm on vacation from tomorrow until Sunday, the 16th of September, but when I come back we'll get this rolling. We need more players though, so get everyone interested to join guys!

Is anyone else having a problem getting the files downloaded like Nightbringer? I've put my copies of 2.3 into Dropbox where they will be available. However Dropbox is only 2 Gigs in size so I have to shuffle the 3 files in & out (total 2.2 gigs). If anyone else needs them sign up on Dropbox and PM me the email address you use and I can give you access. Hopefully, this will work.
Also, if I set forts to disappear if left empty in that file, all empty forts disappear including the starting preset ones. Which way does everybody want to play?
Myth : I haven't tried a full HA army battle but they do seem to play fairly well.
Nightbringer I used the torrent and it worked just fine. Any particular reason why you don't want to use one?

Download Utorrent. Install it. Click on the torrent link and approve the torrent download in the program. That's about it.
Withdrawing out of this one to get the other game going. Sorry.
Noo, we need more active players!
Nightbringer did you manage to get it going?
