It pains me to say that, let alone feel it. But there you go. We take 10 years to clear an illegal camp (the part that was legal was only so due to the insane retroactive planning permission loop hole) and the French just get on with it.

Here we worry about the "traditions" of persons as though this is more important than the laws everyone else has to follow. Years of paying lawyers (and the state gets to pay both sides of course) before finally they are... well, forced to move to another place and start again.

Yes, as always with the daily mail their slant is "Foreigners coming over here" and so I'm not going to comment on the more editorial parts of the article as there would be considerable bias.

That's how you do it, illegally settling Roma's are a disaster wherever they go. All they seem to do is beg and steal

I don't care who they are - Romas or Hedge Fund Managers. With such clear breaches of the law, matters should be sorted out quickly without the need for years in the courts.

You may not care but gutmensch does, they are afraid to act because that wouldn't make them 100% OK, Roma's are on the feelgood-list

How do you spell "car" in the UK?

Wait...A good social welfare system attracts deadbeats?! How can this be?

We have similar problems with such camps in the Neth's. The number and sorts of crime they engage in are legion. Tax inspectors, or any public official for that matter, are often afraid (with good reason) to enter such camps without ample police protection. A couple of years ago it emerged that the tax agency had a long standing deal with some of these camps where they would just buy off all their tax duties with a lump sum; lower than what the inhabitants would presumably owe in taxes, but it made financial sense because of obvious reasons - the effort needed to get them to pay their due outweighed the benefits. Needless to say the general public was appalled when this emerged.

AFAIK these camps are mostly white trash of 100% Dutch origin though. Roma families do cause trouble but in most reported cases they seem to be using publicly funded housing; I don't actually know wether Roma in the Netherlands tend live in camps like they do elsewhere.

Never heard anyone defending Roma on cultural grounds, either.

The nuisance they cause seems to be very similar, though.

Nah, the crime is arguably much more serious but they just want to be left alone, they won't cause any trouble. Where Roma's settle petty-crime explodes, pickpocketing, shoplifting, burglary, and not a crime but VERY annoying, begging
