Hearts of Iron 3 (http://www.heartsofirongame.com/)

Hearts of Iron 3 from the Paradox Interactive development team is the third instalment in the critically acclaimed Hearts of Iron series.
The Hearts of Iron series has become renowned for being the biggest, most detailed and complete strategic game series on World War 2 ever made. Hearts of Iron III will follow that tradition closely while focusing on satisfying veteran players through a multitude of brand new features and systems, including a huge map with more than 14,000 land and sea provinces.

And now that that is out of the way....

So my friend got me this game last night and I've been playing it with him and a mutual friend. Right now I'm playing as Ireland. One of us is Germany and the other is Japan. I did some reading on the wiki, but I could use some experienced players help.

First question: From what I've read, leadership only increases through certain upgrades and through conquest. Is there another way to increase it? If so how?

Second: I'm trying to join the axis powers and the overall plan is to invade the UK and install an Irish dictatorship over the British peoples. For some reason though my neutrality has stalled out at 34% and has been there since January of 37. Its now March 38. Is there something I'm doing wrong?

Third: I'm trying to put the Irish Nationalist Socialist Party into power, but the only way I'm increasing the political power of that party is through getting my German friend to use spies on me. Is there another way to put this party into power? Also, is there a way to hold elections early?

Edit: Well as of January 29th 1939, the Irish National Socialist Party took power in a coup over the previous political party of the Liberal Party. Social unity is in ruins and the govt is having trouble stabilizing after the coup. The UK has sent spies to influence me back under their thumb and I am hoping that supporting the ruling party with my spies might be able to counter them.

So a fourth question to add: When do I get the ability to change my heads of govt around? As of now there are no candidates for me to choose from for any member of the cabinet.

The only other way that I can think of after conquest or upgrades is to check all the political leaders available in the politics section and see if any have a leadership bonus.

Failing that you will have to mod the amount your provinces give you which is usually your capital city, seeing as were talking about Ireland then change the attributes for Dublin.

You can find it the folder where you stored the game look for a folder called History there is a folder inside called Provinces next find the folder United Kingdom.

Inside the United Kingdom folder all the provinces for Ireland are contained just search for Dublin and mod away to your hearts content (pun not intended)

It's all done using MS Word so it's not hard at all, just remember to copy the entire History folder to your desktop as a backup.

For example

owner = IRE
controller = IRE
add_core = IRE

points = 2
metal = 9.00
energy = 14.00
rare_materials = 2.00
industry = 6
anti_air = 2
infra = 10
air_base = 4
naval_base = 10
manpower = 3.00
leadership = 0.30

you could change it to this if you want

owner = IRE
controller = IRE
add_core = IRE

points = 2
metal = 999.00
energy = 999.00
rare_materials = 999.00
crude_oil = 999
industry = 10
anti_air = 10
infra = 10
air_base = 10
naval_base = 10
manpower = 30.00
leadership = 30.00

Don't go to high on the numbers you will end up bored and buildings and infrastructure should be no higher than 10.

I dont have a notion on the other political stuff as to be honest I just ignore it and just use the noneutrality cheat if I want to go to war.

Frank McDermott in the Minister of Security section of the Politics tab gives +5 leadership modifier

Ah, good old HOI3. It's been a while since I've played it, but I'll give your questions a shot:

1. I'm afraid those are the only ways to increase leadership. When you do start conquering stuff, make sure to use the 'collaboration government' occupation policy, as that maximises leadership (and manpower) gained. You can also research the computer techs to improve research efficiency, but I'm fairly certain your leadership would fall below the break-even point where that becomes efficient.

2. I think if you hover over your 'intelligence' screen somewhere, it says what missions foreign spies are performing. I can't remember whether there is a 'raise neutrality' mission, but if so that might be stopping it from falling (and of course, make sure you have 10 domestic spies lowering neutrality). I believe when you join the Axis your neutrality will fall by ~20 points as well. Make sure to 'align to faction' with Germany, as that should completely counterbalance any spies the British might be sending, and then some.

3. It's moot now, but there's no way for a country to effectively change their government type from within.

4. There's no means of changing your Head of State/Head of Government, but you should be able to choose between candidates for the rest of the government positions. If there are no other options available, you may just have to wait (some ministers have set years that they appear). Or there might not be any ministers programmed for a fascist Ireland.

Last thing - make sure the German player has read up on the supply system before invading Russia. I learnt that the hard way, unfortunately :wall:.
